Future Report on the Posthuman Humanity: Pluto, a Graphic Novel
Jungman Park
(Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, South Korea)
This lecture examines how the concepts of humanity and posthumanity have developed over time since the advent of imitation of human perspectives in the Renaissance. Reading the posthuman world inhabited by AI robots in Urasawa Naoki’s graphic novel Pluto (2003-2009), Professor Park discusses trans- and post-humanism implied in the novel’s characterization of AI robots, the ethics forbidding robots murdering humans, the question of being human and posthuman in relation to this ethical issue, and gestures toward perfection in humans. Professor Park’s reading of Pluto suggests an optimistic embracement of posthumanity, or “new humanity” initiated by the evolution of artificial intelligence, and invites us to have “optimistic expectation for human existence and future.”
