What if we read Jane Austen and her use of language along with deconstructionist theory? Shawn Normadin’s Jane Austen and Literary Theory offers an astute analysis of the linguistic and literary devices used by Jane Austen in her novels and juvenilia through the lens of deconstructionism. In this meticulous and compelling book, Normaindin reconsiders the deconstructionist concepts and methodologies propounded by Jacques Derrida and Paul de Man by paying particular attention to the word play, phonocentrism, allegory, symbol, “stable and unstable ironies,” “unromantic Romantic irony,” which are placed in tension with one another in Austen’s acclaimed novels including Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma as well as her early writings such as “Evelyn” and “The History of England.” Normandin starts by eloquently discussing how Austen’s “Evelyn” creatively confirms and disturbs the distinction between gift and exchange, the concepts of which are proposed by Derrida in the twentieth century. Then, the book delves into the intermingling interactions and tensions between speech and writing, allegory and irony, allegory and symbol by reading phonocentrism at play in Pride and Prejudice and placing the novel and country house Mansfield Park on the cusp between symbol and allegory. The second half of the book broadens this literary analysis to the meta-fictional level by examining Emma in the context of “parergonal realism” involving the inside/outside constituting the book’s story, title, dedication page, and characterization and by comparing “parabasis” with the unromantic Romantic ironies in “The History of England.” Normandin also articulates the main arguments in poetic and symbolic ways at the end of each chapter, which adds to the pleasure of reading this thought-provoking academic book. Jane Austen and Literary Theory is an ambitious reimagining that will appeal to scholars with interests in deconstructionism, linguistics, book history, and Romantic realism.
