5 Strategies for Using AI like ChatGPT in Teaching
In this teaching tip, we will introduce five strategies for effectively using AI, such as ChatGPT and Bing, in teaching.
1. Creating various examples with AI
- (1) Write prompts(questions) to ask AI requiring various examples of the concept
- (2) Describe your preferred writing style, e.g., clear, straightforward, concrete, etc.
-
(3) Explain the characteristics of students to AI.
- Evaluate whether the examples are interesting, diverse, and practical to the real-life.
- Or, let students assess the validity of the AI-generated examples for deeper learning.
2. Generating various explanation styles with GPT
- (1) Ask your requested explanation styles to AI.
- (2) Describe your preferred writing style, e.g., clear, straightforward, concrete, engaging, etc.
- (3) Explain the characteristics of students to AI. e.g., college students unfamiliar with the concept.
- → For advanced learning, students can fill in the blanks explained by GPT, or find missing elements in the explanation.
3. Creating low-stakes tests with AI
- (1) Inform AI that it will act as a quiz creator.
- (2) Tell AI about the topic being taught and the characteristics of students.
- (3) Create multiple-choice quiz questions and provide guidelines for answer choices.
- (4) Provide correct answers and explanations after the quiz
4. Using GPT for learning diagnostics
- (1) Determine elements for feedback from students. e.g., activities, topics, class discussions
-
(2) Gather answers about what students understand and what students struggle.
→ Use Google Docs or shared documents to collect answers quickly. - (3) Present the collected answers to GPT, and prompt the 3 most important things and most confusing things that students thought about in class GPT can process around 50 answers at once.
- (4) Based on the results, clarify confusing concepts or provide additional explanations in the next class.
5. Providing distributed practice using AI
- (1) Explain AI's role
- (2) Describe the context
- (3) Request ideas for distributed practice
AI as a tool for efficient teaching and effective learning
- We have introduced five teaching strategies using AI like ChatGPT (providing various examples, generating multiple explanations, creating low-stakes learning tests, incorporating student feedback, and offering distributed practice).
- However, there are roles that AI cannot replace, such as guiding direction in discussions, providing personalized answers students' questions, and understanding the level of learning by assessing their assignment.
- If AI is utilized as a tool to bridge the gap between understanding in professors and students and enhance communication, it can help efficient teaching and effective learning.
Updates will be continued until July 2023.
