SKK GSB held its 7th forum on 'Investing in Climate Investing in Growth’ on October 1, 2024, at the International Hall of Sungkyunkwan University. Joojin Kim, the CEO of Solution for Our Climate (SFO°C), delivered a lecture on the topic of 'Climate Change Policy Challenges in Korea.'
Joojin emphasized, "To decarbonize the world, the role of the power sector is crucial, which is why renewable energy is important."
He elaborated on the hidden aspects of LNG (liquefied natural gas), often considered a better energy source than coal.
"LNG, liquefied natural gas, is technically methane gas. Methane is one of the greenhouse gases and, in the first 20 years after it is emitted, has a global warming potential 80 times stronger than that of carbon dioxide,” Joojin explained.
He pointed out, "South Korea is one of the smallest renewable energy-producing nations. This is not due to a lack of natural resources or technology, but mainly because of regulations."
Joojin emphasized that as renewable energy sources like solar power become cheaper, South Korea also needs to increase its use of renewable energy.
