- New Year’s Message from the President of SKKU, Kyu Sang CHUNG
- Dear Sungkyun Family, The eventful year of 2017 that saw many issues and changes within the country has passed, and the year of 2018 has come. 2018 is the year of the Golden Dog as well as the year of 得意之秋, which means all wishes come true. I sincerely hope that all SKKU members’ dreams and wishes are realized in accordance with the meaning of 2018. Since SKKU declared ‘VISION 2020+’ as a blueprint of SKKU’s vision last year, we have shown outstanding achievement. In particular, SKKU has expanded its value as a global leading research-oriented university by publishing over 5,200 articles in the famous scientific journal, Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). Our research competence is recognized from various outcomes such as ranking No.2 in Korea for citation counts for top 1% research papers, the largest number of awardees (3 people) for Highly Cited Researchers in 2017, the only known Korean awardee (Prof. Nam Gyu PARK) for “2017 Potential recipients of the Nobel Prize", and more. Also, SKKU has strengthened its brand value as a global leading university by receiving high rankings in various evaluations. SKKU is the No.1 Korean private comprehensive university, 108th in QS world university rankings and 111th in THE, No.1 in NCSI for 11 consecutive years, No.1 in the job employment rate (76.4%) for 3 consecutive years, and more. Furthermore, SKKU is putting effort into promote new technology and investment by establishing the AI Convergence Center, which will lead the 4th Industrial Revolution and Kingo Investment Partners, a venture capital made by SKKU alumni companies. When I was appointed as a President of SKKU, I promised to improve results by building a solid foundation during my 1st year. During my presidency, I have been pushing for the New Challenge Project for 5 core fields: Software and Convergence Education, Research Competence, Global Alliance, Industrial-Academic Cooperation, and Management Innovation, and achieved many fruitful performances. I will give my best effort to complete projects that we have been working on. I believe the outstanding results that SKKU has shown were achieved by our three-in-one system of university, foundation, and alumni who have given their best efforts. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for all of the Sungkyun members: professors, staff, students, the university foundation, and alumni who gave their dedication and passion for the development of SKKU. I would like to ask for passion, active participation, and continuous innovation of all members in order to become a world top institution beyond the limits and crisis that our university is confronting. - Mr. Hyoungmin Kim delivers "Hyegang Development Fund" to Department of Acting for Theater, Film and TV.
- Mr. Hyoungmin Kim(Department of Accounting, Class of 1990) visited the President(Dr. Kyusang Jung) and contributed the "Hyegang" development fund for the Department of Acting for Theatre, Film and TV for the second time. He had promised dominating for next 10 years with the same amount of the fund since last year. Not only the President, but Prof. Yong-a Yoon students attended the ceremony and showed their big appreciation for donator's affection toward the school. He said that he wishes the fund be the stepping stone for students to practice in a better environment. He also mentioned that he is very proud of recent SKKU's growth so he will constantly stand behind juniors to give support to their dreams and talents. SKKU has the plan to utilize the fund as the foundation for a sustainable arts ecosystem and industiral-educational vitalization.

- On 2nd Nov in the office of the dean, 2017 Dean's Scholarship awarding ceremony was held. School of Art in SKKU gives away a special and exclusive scholarship as part of encouraging students' active art work. This year, 5 teams got the scholarship; - '8 individual skills'(Wanho Kim, Dept of Design) - 'Playground' Music Video(Chaewon Suh, Dept of Film, TV and Multimedia) - 'Un-Puzzle'(Hankyul Jang, Dept of Fashion Design) - 'Room without doors'(Wiju Bae, Dept of Fine Art) - 'Resting'(Minji Ma, Dept of Fine Art)

- Capstone Design Team Receives Award at IOT Innovation Challenge
- Capstone Design Team, a group of SKKU students who participated in the ‘IOT Innovation Challenge’ sponsored by Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Electronics Association, received an award of excellence. The team members took ‘Comprehensive Design Project’ courses last semester while conducting a Capstone Design Project, which was supported by the LINK+ Business Unit with advising professor Yong Serk KIM. Two teams received awards of excellence, and the themes of their projects were ‘Smart Assistance using Cloud Deep Learning Service’ and ‘Smart Portable Bath System.’ Each team received a prize of 0.5 million won.

- Global Buddy Program's Orientation was successfully held!
- The School of Art runs the Global Buddy program, connecting Korean-foreign students. Program orientation, held in the Suseon Hall in October 30th, made the first chance to meet 'buddies' and explained how the program runs. In the orientaion, buddies spent time planning what to do together for the next 4 weeks. On the 5th week, all the buddies go to watch a play 'Romeo and Juliet', played by students of SKKU Department of Acting, Film and TV. During this 5-week program with various missions to complete, students are expected to get along with each other and have global and open mind.

- SKKU Ranks 111th in the THE World University Rankings, Rising from 137th Last Year
- Sungkyunkwan University ranked 111th in the THE (Times Higher Education) World Rankings this year, rising from 137th last year. SKKU also rose to 3rd place in the ranking of domestic universities in Korea. SKKU scored 54.1 points in teaching (rising from 53.7 points last year), 55.1 points in research (50.6 points last year), 69.5 points in article citations (66.5 points last year), 93.7 points in industry income (88.9 points last year), and 44.7 points in international outlook (39.6 points last year), showing a steady upward trend in the overall evaluation index. Kyu Sang CHUNG, the President of Sungkyunkwan University, said, “For the past several years, SKKU has been devoted to creating synergy through the mutual growth of education and research by supporting integrated research and recruiting world-class scholars as professors to introduce a global-standard education system. We will spare no effort to become a world-class university.” SKKU is implementing creative convergence education, such as multidisciplinary approaches and specialized academic-industrial cooperative education, that will lead the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In particular, SKKU is expanding academic-industrial courses of study, such as convergent foundation projects, fusion capstone design, and integrated team field training in order to connect students’ creative business ideas to enterprises. Also, in cooperation with small businesses, SKKU created excellent results by releasing about 20 commercialized products and submitting more than 30 patent proposals every year.

- The exhibition for a dazzling world of flowers
- The University Museum(Director Jo Hwan) is going to open the 35th exhibition, titled ‘A dazzling world of flowers’. The exhibition is inspired by ‘Hwawanggye-The Kings of A Flower World’ in Samguk Sagi -a historical record of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. It is also expected for visitors to seek for the spirit of the age by describing a peony, lotus, apricot flower and rose, so-called kings of flowers from ancient times to modern times. This special exhibition will show three bridal dresses for Korean traditional wedding ceremonies presented by Pro. Jo Woo-Hyun(Fashion Design) with his students. ● Detailed Information 1. - Fashion Design students, Enjoying DDP Style Market
- ‘DDP Style Festa 2017’ is one of the annual style festivals in Dongdaemun District, supported by local merchants and agencies. Above all, ‘DDP Style Market’ shows stylish works by using fashion items of Dongdaemun Market. This time, students of Fashion Design participated in this market. They opened a pop-up store, styling clothes and decorating spaces. Under the direction of Prof. Im Eun-hyeok, eight Fashion Design majors made a creative room to honor Sid Vicious of Sex Pistols and his girl friend Nancy Spungen. - Fresh Art Fair 2017
- Graduates and undergraduates of Fine Art opened ‘Fresh Art Fair’ at the lobby floor, MESA from 16 to 27, August. 2017 Fresh Art Fair was hosted by Department of Fine Art and supported by SHINSEGAE CO.,LTD. This fair encouraged visitors and artists to build more close connections by breaking down stereotypes. Art works like paintings, drawings, films, pictures and cultural products are displayed at the lobby floor, MESA. Anyone can choice and buy these works on the site like the market.

- Global Capstone Design Team Wins at 2017 PACE Global Annual Forum
- The 1st semester ‘Global Capstone Design’ team (Advisory Professors: Gwan Soo HAN, Sang Do NOH) received 3rd prize for the Product Engineering, Industrial Design field in the PUMA Project Competition at the ‘2017 PACE Global Annual Forum’. The 2017 PACE Global Annual Forum was held from July 24th to 27th in Toluca, Mexico, and 6 teams from 30 universities in 8 countries participated in the competition. PUMA stands for Personal Urban Mobility Access. The team from SKKU invented a personal mobility and transportation service for the baby boomer generation. With support from the SKKU LINC Business Unit, 28 students majoring in subjects such as Systems Management Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Psychology, and Design participated in the event. From the School of Art, the Department of Design is included. Over the course of one year, they organized a team with various universities including UPRM, Purdue University, Howard University, Ibero-American University, ITESM, Kookmin University, and Inha Unversity. The ‘Global Capstone Design’ team will seek a higher degree of completion for the project through the advanced education program ‘Advanced Convergence Capstone Design’ and by attending other international competitions and start-ups.
