Sungkyunkwan University Department of Dance’s WAVE (K-COIL) Course Leads Choreo Lab Project with University of Taipei Rhythms of the World, Written in the Body
is the culminating work of the Choreo Lab Project, an international collaboration between the Department of Dance at Sungkyunkwan University and University of Taipei. The joint course was co-taught by Professor Kim Na-yi of Sungkyunkwan University and Professor Tung, I-Fen of the University of Taipei, bringing together students from both institutions in a shared creative process that transcended national and cultural boundaries. From March 30 to April 5, Sungkyunkwan University students traveled to Taipei, where they engaged in an intensive period of collaborative creation with their Taiwanese counterparts. The project culminated in performances held on April 4 and 5, both of which were successfully received. The exchange will continue in May, when students from the University of Taipei are scheduled to visit Seoul from May 18 to 23 to participate in Sungkyunkwan University’s dance showcase, presenting the fruits of this cross-cultural collaboration on stage. At its core, the work approaches culture not as a set of outward symbols, but as rhythm—embedded in breath, weight, and tempo. It traces how bodies shaped by distinct training methods and lived experiences encounter one another, collide, intersect, and ultimately reorganize themselves through movement. Rather than seeking uniformity, the piece embraces both harmony and dissonance. Divergent rhythms and movement vocabularies converge, sometimes aligning, at other times deliberately falling out of sync to generate new relationships and forms. In doing so, the work reflects the fluidity and diversity inherent in contemporary society, while posing a broader question: how do individuals with differing backgrounds and sensibilities coexist? The performance offered a meaningful platform for students to present their experimental approaches and artistic growth directly to an audience. Notably, what began as a collaborative course conducted online evolved into an embodied, in-person process of creation and performance. The project ultimately underscores the expanding possibilities of artistic practice through international collaboration. -

- [Faculty] Theatre Professor Yoon Jae-ho’s Feature Film “Left Behind” Selected for the 27th Jeonju International Film Festival NEW
- Theatre Professor Yoon Jae-ho’s Feature Film “Left Behind” Selected for the 27th Jeonju International Film Festival A new feature by director Yoon Jae-ho, following “Beautiful Days” and “Fighter,” exploring family fracture and loss with a cast including Park Chul-min and Kim Yoon-seo “Left Behind” is a feature-length narrative film presented by director Yoon Jae-ho approximately five years after gaining international recognition with “Beautiful Days” (2018)—which opened the Busan International Film Festival and starred Lee Na-young and Jang Dong-yoon—and “Fighter” (2021), starring Lim Sung-mi and Baek Seo-bin, which was selected for the Berlin International Film Festival. Notably, the film draws attention for having been completed through a “one-person production system,” in which Yoon single-handedly carried out the entire process, including screenwriting, cinematography, directing, producing, editing and color grading. Yoon also maintains a longstanding relationship with the Jeonju International Film Festival. Following his documentary “Madame B” (2016), short film “Jjigae” (2023), and documentary “Breath” (2024), “Left Behind” marks his first invitation to the festival with a feature-length narrative film, adding further significance to the selection. “The fracture of the family is a central theme that runs through my work,” Yoon said. “With this film, I sought to examine division and loss within a capitalist society through a subtly humorous lens,” he added, explaining his directorial intent. Led by veteran actor Park Chul-min, the cast—including Kim Yoon-seo, Lee Tae-kyu, Kang Seok-cheol and Han Su-woo, all recognized for their solid acting—delicately portrays the disintegration of a family. Set during one summer, “Left Behind” follows siblings who reunite after a long time apart, as long-standing conflicts surrounding their father resurface. The film is scheduled to meet audiences for the first time this spring in Jeonju. - [Faculty] Professor Ahn Sang-hyuk of the Department of Film Publishes The Kairos of Anxiety
- New Book Release The Kairos of Anxiety By Ahn Sang-hyuk | Saramui Munui | 380 pages Sungkyunkwan University Professor Ahn Sang-hyuk of the Department of Film has published a new book, The Kairos of Anxiety, offering a profound analysis of the nature of anxiety from an anthropological perspective. The volume represents the culmination of Professor Ahn’s long-standing scholarly engagement with the theme of anxiety. Rather than treating anxiety as an emotion to be eliminated, the book reinterprets it as kairos—a decisive, creative moment in which one encounters the possibility of becoming a new self. Professor Ahn cautions that in an era when artificial intelligence effortlessly produces polished answers, knowledge devoid of genuine reflection may be more dangerous than ignorance itself. In this context, he presents a striking paradox: anxiety is not merely a burden but an inevitable fissure that shatters outdated intellectual illusions. Through that very crack, he suggests, a glimmer of hope emerges—one that allows us to sense previously unknown realms of thought and experience. Drawing on the ideas of two towering figures in the study of anxiety—Søren Kierkegaard and Jacques Lacan—Professor Ahn illuminates the psychological depths of modern life from multiple angles. Kierkegaard famously described anxiety as the “dizziness of freedom,” arguing that the instinctive trembling humans feel when faced with infinite possibilities is itself proof of their freedom. Lacan, by contrast, expanded the concept of anxiety as a journey toward discovering one’s singular existence—an emotion that helps individuals locate the coordinates of their “true self,” beyond the desires imposed by others. “The strength to overcome the socio-economic anxieties that trouble contemporary life begins with understanding the essence of anxiety itself,” Professor Ahn explained. “I hope this book encourages readers to move beyond the gaze of others and reclaim the agency to lead their own lives.”

- Cultural Arts Capstone Design Outcomes Exhibition Successfully Concluded Under MOU with Jongno Cultural Foundation
- Cultural Arts Capstone Design Outcomes Exhibition Successfully Concluded Under MOU with Jongno Cultural Foundation An exhibition titled Revisiting Jongno, showcasing the outcomes of the College of Arts’ Cultural Arts Capstone Design course (instructors: Professor Lim Sungmin and Professor Park Yujin), was held from December 15 to 16 at Sungkyun Gallery in the Business Building on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus. ▲ Exhibition view of “Revisiting Jongno” The exhibition was organized as part of a regionally connected education project under the RISE initiative and was planned and operated based on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Jongno Cultural Foundation. A total of 40 students from the College of Arts and the School of Business participated in the course. Through a cultural and artistic lens, students explored everyday life, local culture, and a range of issues facing the Jongno district, presenting their findings and interpretations through exhibition works. Notably, Kim Jin-hwan, Director at the Jongno Cultural Foundation, contributed to the course by delivering a special lecture and serving as a mentor. His engagement provided students with first-hand insights into local challenges and enabled them to propose creative, practice-oriented solutions grounded in real-world contexts. ▲ Special lecture by an expert from the Jongno Cultural Foundation The exhibition consisted of six team-based projects. Each team began with a distinct research question and closely observed Jongno’s streets and residents, as well as its history and contemporary conditions. Based on these observations, the teams proposed diverse interpretations and future possibilities for the district. Through processes of research, planning, and artistic expression, students developed their ideas into tangible outcomes. ▲ Students explaining their projects to visitors at the exhibition This outcomes exhibition stands as a meaningful example of how university education can be organically connected with local cultural fields through the RISE initiative. It also served as a platform to share the learning achievements of students who collaborated across disciplinary boundaries, highlighting the educational value of interdisciplinary and community-engaged learning.
