- Prof. Kee-jung YOON Research Team of SKKU Integrative Biotechnology department, Identification of mechanism by which cancer-related genes regulate normal neural stem cell activity and brain morphogenesis - Open the way to understand brain formation process through regulation of neural stem cells – Prof. Kee-jung YOON Research Team of SKKU Integrative Biotechnology department has found that the Ttyh1 gene, known to be expressed at high levels in cancer cells, is necessary for maintaining the stemness of neural stem cells. The researchers found that Ttyh1 protein induces an increase in the activity of gamma secretase enzymes, strengthens the Notch signaling pathway, and thereby enhances the self-proliferation of neural stem cells important for brain formation. Professor Kee-jung Yoon, who led the study, said, "Cancer cells and normal stem cells share many cell signaling systems. The significance of this study is that Ttyh1, which is suspected of causing cancer, is an important gene related to normal brain formation." The results of this study were published on November 1st in the EMBO reports (Impact Factor: 8.74), a global authority on molecular biology. The research was conducted with support project for middle-grade researchers promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Research Foundation. Professor Kee-Jung YOON is a corresponding author and Dr. Ju-wan KIM (Department of Integrative Biotechnology) is the lead author.
