- 'The Key to Immunity', the Secret of Red Ginseng
- 'The Key to Immunity', the Secret of Red Ginseng - Many polysaccharide components in 6-year old red ginseng body, immune cell activation, nitric oxide production The key to immunity is the red ginseng polysaccharide component. The red ginseng polysaccharide is contained in the body part of 6-year old ginseng with head, body and legs. It is characterized by polysaccharide component increase of more than 60% in the process of making ginseng with red ginseng. Sungkyunkwan University Department of Genetic Engineering Prof. Jae Yeol Cho and Kyungpook National University Prof. Man Whi Lee's team have shown that red ginseng polysaccharide improves immunity by activating macrophages responsible for the body's immune system, in the SCI-grade Mediators of Inflammation. Prof. Jae Yeol Cho said, "When you eat red ginseng, macrophages responsible for the body's immune system are activated and promote the intracellular transport of immune proteins such as NF-κB, AP-1, STAT-1, ATF-2, CREB, etc. As a result, nitric oxide, active oxygen, and tumor necrosis factor, which kill cancer cells, viruses, and bacteria, can be actively produced to enhance immunity.” This article is a translation of khan news. - Photosynthetic Production of α-farnesene from CO2 by Profs. Han Min WOO & Hyun Jeong LEE
- Photosynthetic Production of α-farnesene from CO2 by Profs. Han Min WOO & Hyun Jeong LEE Solar-to-chemical and solar-to-fuel production from CO2 have been developed using engineered microorganisms that assimilate CO2 and convert target chemicals and fuels using solar energy. In addition to integrated bio-electrochemical systems, photosynthetic cyanobacteria have been metabolically engineered to redirect CO2 to value-added chemicals as bio-solar cell factories. The research team of Profs. Han Min WOO and Hyun Jeong LEE reported the metabolic engineering of unicellular Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 to improve the photosynthetic production of α-farnesene from CO2 in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, December 6, 2017. As a result of the lack of farnesene synthase (FS) activity in the wild-type cyanobacterium, the research team metabolically engineered S. elongatus PCC 7942 to express heterologous FS from apple fruit, resulting in detectable peaks of α-farnesene. To enhance α-farnesene production, an optimized methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway was introduced in the farnesene-producing strain to supply farnesyl diphosphate. Subsequent cyanobacterial culture with a dodecane overlay resulted in photosynthetic production of α-farnesene from CO2. Prof. WOO said that to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of photosynthetic production of α-farnesene from CO2 in the unicellular cyanobacterium S. elongatus PCC 7942. This engineered strain could be further optimized to accelerate the development of bio-solar cell factories to convert CO2 to α-farnesene as a value-added bioproduct (fragrance, surfactants, etc.) or α-farnesane, a potential bio-jet fuel. This work was supported by the Korea Carbon Capture & Sequestration R&D Center (KCRC, 2017M1A8A1072034) and the Basic Science Research Program (2017R1A2B2002566 and 2017R1A6A3A01011460) through the National Research Foundation of Korea, funded by the Korean Government [Ministry of Science and Information and Communications Technology (ICT)]. The eventful year of 2017 that saw many issues and changes within the country, has passed and the year of 2018 has come. 2018 is the year of the Golden Dog as well as the year of 得意之秋 which means all wishes come true. I sincerely hope that all SKKU members’ dreams and wishes are realized in accordance with the meaning of 2018. Since SKKU declared ‘VISION 2020+’ as a blueprint of SKKU’s vision last year it has shown outstanding achievement. In particular, SKKU has expanded its value as a global leading research-oriented university by publishing over 5,200 articles at the famous scientific journal, Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). Our research competence is recognized from various outcomes such as No.2 in Korea for citation counts for top 1% research papers, largest number of awardees (3 people) for Highly Cited Researchers in 2017, the only known Korean awardee (Prof. Nam Gyu PARK) for “2017 Potential recipients of the Nobel Prize", and more. Also, SKKU also have strengthened its brand value as a global leading university by receiving high rankings in various evaluations; placing No.1 Korean private comprehensive university, 108th in QS world university rankings and 111th in THE, No.1 in NCSI for 11 consecutive years, No.1 in the job employment rate (76.4%) for 3 consecutive years, and more. Furthermore, SKKU is putting effort to promote new technology and investment by establishing AI Convergence Center which will lead the 4th Industrial Revolution and Kingo Investment Partners, a venture capital made by SKKU alumnus’ companies. When I was appointed as a President of SKKU, I promised to improve results by building a solid foundation at my 1st year. During my presidency, I have been pushing for New Challenge Project for 5 core fields: Software and Convergence Education, Research Competence, Global Alliance, Industrial-Academic Cooperation, and Management Innovation, and achieved many fruitful performance. I will give my best effort to complete projects that we have been working on. I believe the outstanding results that SKKU has shown were achieved by our three-in-one system of university, foundation, and alumnus who have given their best efforts. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for all of the Sungkyun members: professors, staff, students, university foundation, and alumnus who gave their dedication and passion for the development of SKKU. I would like to ask for passion, active participation, and continuous innovation of all members in order to become a world top institution beyond the limits and crisis that our university is confronting. Again, thank you very much for all the supports and dedication; and I wish all of you good health, happiness, and success in the coming year. January 1st, 2018 Kyu Sang CHUNG, The President of SKKU College of Biotechnology and Bioengineering

- The 8th Bio-Tech Jamboree was held
- The 8th Bio-Tech Jamboree was held On November 7th, 'Bio-tech Jamboree', the College of Biotechnology and Bioengineering's academic seminar, was held at the Auditorium of the Samsung Library of Natural Sciences Campus. Jamboree is an academic event that in our daily lives students implements the knowledge that have learned in class. It aims to develop the ability needed to study biotechnology such as logically explaining the scientific basis. The subject of the 8th jamboree in this year is 'the 4th Industrial Revolution and Biotechnology; Future Industrialization through Convergence with Digital technology'. Six teams (△B-mec △TOtO △냉장고를부탁해 △너의 질병은 △녹녹 △변호인) that passed the preliminaries held in last September announced the idea and implementation plan about the subject on the basis of scientific basis. Whenever the presentation ended, the MC summarized the contents and help the audience understand the filed. In addition, QR code was displayed on the stage screen during the presentation of each team. The evaluation paper written by the audience was reflected in the evaluation and raised the interest of the audience. After the presentation of all the teams, '변호인' which reported on rumen microorganism research and making kit was in the third place, and 'B-mec' which presented the Daily Individual Care Interface was in the second place. '너의질병은' which announced the Universal Disease Diagnosis - Smart Kit won the first place. College of Biotechnology and Bioengineering
