- Department of Global Management, "2020 Startup CEO Challenge" Completed
- The Department of Global Management has been conducting business camps and global camps to expand students' knowledge by visiting overseas countries such as Singapore and the United States every vacation. However, due to the continued Korona 19, it is impossible to operate existing overseas visiting programs, and various non-face-to-face global programs are planned to replace them. With Professor Shim Soo-ok of the Department of Global Management at the center, a new non-face-to-face competition "2020 Startup CEO Challenge" was held to discover business ideas of students interested in venture start-ups and provide start-up opportunities as prospective start-ups. As shown in the subhead of "Pitch your startup ideas to industry experts in Silicon Valley," the contest allowed students to form a team to present their startup ideas in front of Silicon Valley start-up experts and learn planning and persuasion to attract overseas investment. [Photo 1] Startup CEO Challenge Web Banner The contest was applied from November 4, 2020, and 45 students participated in the contest for about a month despite being in the middle of the semester. Before participants presented their business ideas to Silicon Valley start-up experts, they invited two incumbent CEOs to conduct two webinars to get tips on selecting topics and establishing a business model. First, CEO Yoon Lee, CEO of March 5, and David Koretz, founder of Plum, a world-class wine delivery company, met online with students under the theme 'How to Launch an Idea, the Silicon Valley Way.' While honestly sharing his failure to start a business and successful experiences, he provided practical help to students who were interested in starting a business. Park Hyung-jin, CEO of Breezm, a local company that produces and sells customized glasses to customers with the next webinar, gave a special lecture. During a Q&A session with students, they consulted on how to identify and analyze customer needs. [Photo 2] David Koretz (CEO, Plum) is hosting a webinar. Students who gained insight into startups through two webinars submitted a startup proposal and applied for the preliminary round of the contest. As prospective CEOs, 36 students (10 teams) have melted consumer needs analysis, idea development, business model initiatives, and market launch strategies into their own business ideas. After a week-long review, five teams qualified for the finals, and three Silicon Valley start-up experts, Serhat Cicekoglu (CEO, Sente Foundry), Timothy Morey (VP, Frog) and Yoon Lee (CEO, March 5) were invited as judges on December 11, 2020. [Photo 4] Students Park Hyun-moon and Lee Ji-soo of the Department of Global Management presenting business proposals in English to the panel of judges and Professor Shim Soo-ok; The first place winner was the "Ease-Take" team (Lee Sang-min, Kim Ji-yeon, Jung Woo-sung, Yang Ye-ran and Han Joo-won), who presented a drug-taking service app for busy modern people. It went to 'Unibus' team (Park Hyun-moon and Lee Ji-soo), who proposed a real-time bus payment system as the second place. The "Vecipe" team (Han Deok-in, Kang Hyun-mo, Baek Ji-soo, and Lee Soo-min), which planned a recipe app for Vegetarian, won third place. Each person received 500,000 won, 300,000 won, and 100,000 won each. In response, Han Duk-in's team said, "It was not easy to prepare for a start-up, but it was a very useful and enjoyable time." Thanks to this, interest in start-ups has grown and the world seems to have opened up a little. I hope there will be more events like this in the future in the Department of Global Management," said Lee Sang-min's team, "It was a valuable opportunity to learn how to identify problems from the perspective of consumers, use them as new opportunities to refine and expand business." And it was meaningful to exchange feedback from people who were in the field, and it helped me make future career decisions because I could develop understanding and interest in startups as a whole."

- Sungkyunkwan University has topped the list of four-year universities for the fifth consecutive year. The Ministry of Education and the Korea Educational Development Institute announced the employment rate of graduates (including graduates in August 2018) in February 2019 through a university notice on January 13. In 2019, the employment rate of four-year universities stood at 63.4 percent, down 1.0 percentage points from the previous year. It has been continuously decreasing since 65.0% in 2015, to 64.9% in 2016, 64.6% in 2017, 62.8% in 2018, and 64.4% in 2019. Since the figure is based on graduates in 2019, the impact of the employment cold wave due to COVID-19 is excluded. Sungkyunkwan University recorded a 78.6 percent employment rate, ranking first among four-year universities in Seoul for the fifth consecutive year. Hanyang University (73.8 percent) ranked second and Sogang University (73.7 percent) ranked third. In particular, the gap between No. 1 Sungkyunkwan University and No. 2 Hanyang University is 4.8%p, the same as the difference between No. 2 Hanyang University and No. 10 Seokyeong University. - [Student Success Story] “Find yourself through various experience” Jiwon Shin (Business Administration, Class of 2017)
- SKKU Business School held an ‘Job-Hakdasik(잡학다식)’ for undergraduate students’ employment and networking. On the first day, Jiwon Shin (Class of 2017) from the Bank of Korea gave a lecture as a financial part. She emphasized the importance of finding yourself from various experiences. Let's meet her through an interview and find what kind of preparations we need to make to enter the financial sector. 1. Please Introduce yourself first. Nice to meet you. My name is Jiwon Shin. I entered SKKU Business Administration in 2011, and now worked for BOK (Bank of Korea). 2. Please tell me where you are currently working, why you applied, and what kind of work you are in charge of. I joined the Bank of Korea in 2017. I became interested in the BOK from the recommendation of my club senior. Looking for information about the BOK, I thought that the corporate culture would fit well with me, and I liked that I could work with the pride of contributing to the Korea economy. Currently, I am in charge of identifying and analyzing the trend of the bond market among the financial markets in Korea. 3. What activities did you do while you were in college, such as extracurricular activities and clubs to get a job? I couldn't spend much time on external activities because I was preparing for the CPA exam during my undergraduate period, except the orchestra club in sophomore. At that time, there was a little hierarchy between seniors and juniors, but I had a good time practicing musical instruments with about 20 seniors and juniors every week. I learned a lot about organizational life and responsibility by practicing alone to perform the part I was in charge of before the performance. I also used this experience to show the interviewers adaptability to organizational life. It is not recommended to engage in external activities or club activities only for employment. However, I think it's a waste of time to just study undergraduate studies in college life where we have a lot of time and opportunities to challenge. Get the opportunity to meet new people through various activities and find out what kind of person you are and what you look like when you belong to an organization. 4. What do you want to advise juniors who want to join the financial public companies? You must prepare for the written screening to enter financial public companies. Unlike other places, you can't have an interview if you don't cross the threshold of the written screening. If you are aiming to join the financial sector, take the relevant subjects (financial accounting, financial management, etc.) carefully. When you prepare for the job exam in earnest, take a lecture on subjects required by the company you want. 5. Lastly, please say a word to freshmen at SKKU business school and students preparing to get a job. If you are a freshman, you may have many restrictions on your activities with Covid-19, but I recommend you to try various activities as possible. It can be the field of art, sports, and studies. I think it will be a good opportunity to find out what kind of tendency you have in my organizational life, and this will be a good nourishment for thinking about which company you should enter in the future. The job market has become more difficult recently for job seekers, so I think they will be very anxious now. But I think that if you keep preparing in your place, you'll get good results. Be faithful to the basics and prepare for the written test by setting a certain amount of time every day. It's a tough time, but I hope you get good results!

- [Special Feature] 'College life is a period when students can develop their ability.' <Professor Bae Jun-hyeong>
- Our Business college is developing the core values such as empower and education research, and we are trying to raise up competent people for future value creation. To do that, 4 new teachers were appointed in the first semester of the 2020, The Management(2 people), Business Information(1 person), and Accounting(1 person) in major invited teachers with outstanding capabilities in each field. I met Professor Bae Joon-hyung of Management Major, a new teacher who became a new family member of the business school, and listened to "major research activities, majors, and future plans." Q1. Hello, professor, nice to meet you like this! Please introduce yourself. Hello, my name is Junhyung Bae and I have been working in the management department of the business school since the second semester. After obtaining a Ph.D., I worked in the Department of Business Administration of UNIST, and before grad school, I worked in the NAVER finance department. Q2. Please briefly introduce your major, and what made you choose it? My detailed major in business administration is strategy. Management strategy is a field that studies the characteristics and behavior of companies that have competitive advantage and produce good results in the market. Because corporate performance is determined by various factors, management strategies analyze the company from a broad perspective, including organization, individual, technology, and environment. When I worked at NAVER, I had the opportunity to directly and indirectly observe various strategic decisions and became interested in corporate strategy in a technology-intensive industry. I decided to study abroad as an opportunity, and I chose management strategy as my major. Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting anew at Sungkyunkwan University Business School and your future plans. I think Sungkyunkwan University's business school has achieved its current reputation through the efforts of professors and students for a long time. It is a great pleasure for me personally to be a member of the historic business school, and I will contribute to the school by working hard in research and education. Q4. Please briefly introduce the class that the professor is in charge of. I'm in charge of the management strategy class in the department this semester. To understand the company's performance, this class covers various strategic decision-making topics such as innovation, mergers and acquisitions, and partnerships, along with analysis of external environments and internal capabilities. I hope that students who take classes will be able to understand the logic and background based on corporate performance when they hear economic/management news and live their social lives after graduation. Q5. What are your future research plans? I have studied cooperation/competitive relationships and entrepreneurship between companies, and I am trying to combine these two fields in my research. In this field of study, I am studying how small venture companies and other market members such as venture capitalists or alliance partners interact and I will continue to study in this field. In particular, we plan to focus on corporate activities such as venture investments and research and development collaborations by large companies. Q6. If you have anything you want to say to the students studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University Business School, please tell me. College life is a period of time when students can develop their ability to work as experts in various fields. In everything, I think you can achieve what you mean if you believe in your potential and potential rather than fear of the future. Also, I think it would be very helpful to meet a mentor who is on his way first in his field of interest and always ask for advice.
