[New Professor Special] 'Try courageously in new fields, cheering for an exciting and bright future'
-
Our college of Business is strengthening its core values of education and research, and is striving to nurture talents for student success and future value creation. To this end, four new teachers were appointed in the first semester of the 2022 school year, their majors were marketing(1 person), business information(1 person), FinTech(1 person) and management(1 person), and they were invited to be teachers with excellent competence in each field. This time, we met Professor 'Cho Seong-hee' of
, a new teacher who became a family member of business school, and listened to 'major research activities, majors, and future plans' Q1. Hello, professor. Nice to meet you like this! Please introduce yourself, professor. Hello, nice to meet you. I'm Cho Seong-hee, and I'm with you in the management department of Sungkyunkwan University from the spring semester of 2022. I'm a psychologist who studies working people. I did my PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at the University of Illinois, and before coming to Sungkyunkwan University, I worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial/Organizational Psychology at North Carolina State University for about four and a half years. Q2. Please introduce your major briefly, and what made you choose your major? I belong to the field of organization behavior among management majors. Interest in industrial/organizational psychology and organizational behavioral majors began with an interest in 'people'. Individuals work quite a long time in their lives. The shape may vary, but work has an important meaning for individuals, and the experiences they accumulate while working have a great impact on their identity, health, success, and happiness. As work and labor are important to the success of both individuals and organizations, I felt that there was a lot of research needed in this field. In particular, the fact that work can be a constructive and positive experience for people, and that individuals can study the process of achieving their own and organizational goals efficiently through that experience has motivated to do research in the field of organizational behavior. In addition, among the many ways to improve organizational efficiency, it was good to look at problems from the perspective of thinking about and achieving the development and success of individuals as well as the organization. Organizations must advance to survive fiercely and achieve goals. In this process, I want to understand the stories of the members with the view that "It's what people do" and "People make the place". And ultimately, I want to do research that helps the organization succeed. Q3. Please tell us how you feel about your new start at Sungkyunkwan University Business School and your future plans. I am very happy to meet great professors and students. As researchers, educators, and colleagues, I look forward to the future of growing together in the future, doing my best and enjoying my duties in my place. Q4. Professor, please briefly introduce your class. Within an organization, individuals work in a variety of ways to achieve their goals by teaming up and collaborating with different people. Organizational behavior is the study of what individuals experience in the process, how they influence each other, and how they contribute to the goals of the organization. It covers topics such as characteristics of attitudes, motivation, decision-making, teamwork, conflict, and leadership of the organization's members. Throughout the class, students understand basic organizational behavior theory, systematically analyze related problems, and present appropriate solutions. All of these learning and application courses require the ability to understand, analyze, and criticize various studies conducted in psychology and sociology as well as management. Q5. What is your research plan from now on? To shorten the goal of my research simply, it is 'sustainable job performance management'. In order for and individual to perform well in the long run, efficient resource management is required in non-job related areas as well as job management. In particular, in this flexible work environment, the boundaries between personal and work areas are blurred, and further research is needed on how to strategically manage both areas(work-nonwork interface). In this regard, I have been focusing on topics such as occupational safety and health, work stress and recovery, productivity, and personal selection in detail. In the future, I want to help individuals and organizations sustainable productivity and well-being through research that helps them understand new emotions and events experienced by individuals in the ever-changing modern working environment. Q6. Please tell me what you think is the ideal educator. Personally, I would like to take pride and affection in my field of expertise and contribute in various fields such as research, industry, and education. And I want to be an educator who shares the joy of the course with students. In particular, I look forward to finding strengths of students, developing together, and serving as collaborators to inspire each other. Furthermore, I hope that ultimately all this series of enthusiasm and efforts will have a positive impact on society. Q7. If you have anything you want to say to the students who are studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University Business School, please tell them! I'm so happy to meet you like this. I think the energy and privileges of a university are priceless resources. College life is a grateful time to learn as much as you want with great professors and classmates, explore various fields, and lay the groundwork for what you are dreaming of. Before you go into society, I hope you enjoy all the privileges that the university gives you during the time you spend at Sungkyunkwan University. I hope that you understand your strengths, develop more, and fully trust work hard on your invaluable potential. Also, I hope you can courageously try new fields. I support your exciting and bright future! -

- Job Hak-Da-Sik (career concert) event held in the first semester of 2022
-
Business School (Dean Ahn Hee-joon) held Job Hak-Da-Sik (career concert) to strengthen the network of seniors and juniors and to help freshman and students in their careers. The last
was held as a one-way lecture, but this year, the operation method was changed to reflect student's feedback by matching graduation seniors and arranging offline meetings to reflect student demand. Under the concept of kick-off, career mentoring was conducted after the opening day (career concert) event, which was given by the representative senior. First of all, the career concert was held on April 27th (Wed) at 33B101 Business Hall, and 101 students from the business administration department attended. Yoo Seung-hwan (Business 09, Kia Motors), Kang Won-kyung (Business 09, Samsung C&T), Lim Chae-young (Business 10, KCB), and Kim Ji-hong (Business 13, LG Chem) attended as mentors and held presentation, talk shows, and Q&A sessions. Kim Ji-hong (Business 13, LG Chem), a senior graduated who attended as a mentor, said, "I had a lot to say because it was a career concert where I could be with the first and second graders, not just third to fourth graders. I want my juniors to do things that I haven't done or liked in school. It was good to answer the students who contacted me personally with sincerity and to be helpful to our juniors." A business administration student who attended that day said, "I entered business school, but I have a vague idea of what career path I should take, but I got a notification about the event about the career concert and got interested and participated. It was nice to be able to approach comfortably in a non-hard atmosphere, and I was able to get a lot of help from various aspects." "When I planned the event, I wanted to solve the rather heavy theme of 'career' in a fun way." said the director of policy execution at the business school who prepared for the event. He added "We approached each other in a way that was easy to approach by communicating with each other in the form of a talk show rather than a one-sided lecture by our seniors, and thanks to the business students who actively participated, the event was successful." The Department of Business Administration regularly conducts to strengthen the sense of belonging to freshman and enrolled students, and plans to strengthen the human network by inducing mentor activities after graduation. -

- School of Business 2022-1 Semester Sports Competition successfully completed
- Business School (Dean Ahn Hee-joon) held a sports competition for the first semester of the 2022 school year on May 6 (Fri) at the Grand Stadium and Basketball Stadium of the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus. About 510 students from the Department of Business Administration and Global Business Administration participated in this event, and various competitions such as soccer, mixed dodge ball, tug-of-war, obstacle running, mixed relay, mini-games, and group jumping were held. Kim Moo-jin, the 22nd student council president of Business School, who prepared this event, said, "About 500 classmates attended this year, recording the highest number of participants ever. At the time of preparation for the sports competition, I was worried about the easing of the COVID-19 quarantine guidelines, but I am happy to make pleasant memories for my colleagues at business schools due to eating-related regulations and distance." Kim Ro-hee, vice president of the student council, said, "A successful event was held for all students at business schools, including new students in the class of 2022. Thanks to the sports competition, I felt proud to see the active interaction between seniors and juniors, who had been cut off so far" "I was so glad and happy that the sports competition that has not been held due to COVID-19 took place in three years. Through sports such as soccer, basketball, and dodge ball, we were able to increase the class's unity, and it was an opportunity for us to get closer to our classmates who had not been in contact with each other." said a student at the department of business administration. "I entered the department of global management within the business school, but there were few events to interact with the business department, so I was disappointed that there was no contact point at the same university. It was nice to have time to be together through this event." said a student at the department of Global Business Administration. Through this sports competition, the university formed intimacy through mutual exchange between freshman and current students and provided networking opportunities for business administration and global business administration. In the future, various cultural events will be held to strengthen the sense of belonging to the department.

- Kang Min-ji (Business 17)_Interview on Student Success Award Dean's Award
- 1. Hello, please introduce yourself first. Last August, after conversion to summer internship(left) and current position(right) Hello, I am a business administration major of Sungkyunkwan University, and I joined Kakao after graduating in February and am currently working as a service planner in the item planning part. I'm making a Kakaotalk emoticon service, and among them, I'm focusing on planning a service related to the emoticon subscription service. I'm still living days where I can't realize my graduation and work, I don't know how March has passed! 2. I heard that you won the Dean's Award for Student Success Award at the degree conference in 2022. Please give us a brief acceptance speech. The definition of the word 'success' in my life will continue to change, but this time, I think that the award was given for 'the one who knows me best'. When I look back on my time at business school, I can never think of myself as I am now. I tried to do everything I could, whether I'm good or not, and if there's something fun that I like out of five times, I fell in love with it and kept thinking about why I liked it and what I wanted to do with it. All of the publicity jobs I had at the business school student council, the marketing logic I learned at the conference, and the various industry-academic cooperation classes that I could learn about in practice, so I was able to stack up one by one what I like and finally get to know myself best. Of course, it's not limited to work or academic activities. As an example, I have tried running, climbing, and fitness, but the one that suits me best is fitness. Then, I fell in love with exercising through the PT that I received by chance, and it became one of the important things that made me a person by connecting to various activities such as SNS exercise account and exercise one day class. It had a lot of influence on my mindset and attitude, and it was used as one of the elements of my cover letter. If you've come to show a little bit of 'interest' in anything, grab a grip and get in. There will be endless possibilities in it. 3. You launched a direct agricultural product store and showed your spirit of challenge as a business student. Where there any difficulties in challenging new fields? How did you overcome it? It was the hardest thing to realize and feel that theory and practice are different. Of course, the reason why I decided to launch the store is that it's a shame that the plans that I've written so many times at the conference are just one document, so I'll have to plan it myself! That's what I thought. No matter how many simulations and cases are prepared by combining all the theories that have been learned so far, unexpected situations always occur in practice. Every day, I realized that our products may not be known to people, that the world is different from the perspective of producers, not consumers, and I had to quickly find what I could do and put it into practice immediately. First of all, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, the store had to run flawlessly. Every moment, I think there was only one thing that was driving me. Thinking in small pieces. I think about my worries and goals in separate pieces. When a problem occurs, it's hard to figure it out if you try to fix it all at once. If you break the elements of the situation into small pieces and focus on each one and process it, everything is resolved at some point. The same goes for the goal. It is absolutely necessary to draw a big forest first, but it is neither realistic nor motivating if you stop in that forest. So, I work to split the forest back into trees one by one. For a store, for example, you set a monthly target sales, set weekly/daily target sales accordingly, and make a marketing plan for it. If you turn the word 'mountain by collecting dust', it's like mountain is made of dust after all of all. If I split anything, I think I can do it right away. Self-harvested strawberries(left), Store branding, which was done with packaging and product photography(right) 4. If you have any activities that you did when you were in school, please introduce them. If there's a program that you remember the most or you want to recommend to your juniors, please let me know. In school, I'd like to recommend academic societies and industry-academic cooperation classes. If you find interest, you need a step to develop it. At this time, you can learn how to establish logic through a more practical and systematic curriculum at the conference. Each academic society has a slightly different personality, buy if you have a field you are interested in, I think it is the same that it is the fastest way to learn the intensified content of that field. However, it is a process that requires a lot of time and effort, so it is most important to be sure of your interests. Industry-academic cooperation classes can see how our ideas are actually acceptable in practice, and how we need to reflect reality in order to be implemented in practice. The great advantage is that you can experience all these processes in class. In addition, since most of these classes are recommended for senior students, there are many students with a lot of knowledge, experience, and passion in various fields, so I gained a rare experience to learn and grow together during the team project. I recommend various part-time jobs outside of school. Before the internship experience, I think it is an experience that allows me to find out my interests in a little more diverse areas and to lay the foundation for my social life. It can be a process of discovering and supplementing what I feel unexpectedly lacking, such as so-called work heads and interpersonal speech, or finding a job connection where I started as a part-time job. In addition, I can afford to invest in another area of interest by makings small pocket money. So, I hope you have a small part-time job that's not too much for your studies I want to recommend it. 5. What is your future career and goal? I want to make my own service someday. In my favorite area of interest, service that I think is essential to the world. I am a new planner who is still laying the groundwork for development, but I want to become a planner who can boldly choose my dream and service when I have a chance. So, I always try not to forget the passion and excitement I have now. The courage to take on a challenge begins with this fluttering heart. So I hope that my ability and dream will make the world a little easier to live in. I believe that the greatest value that IT services create is to connect and make the world convenient, so I also want to be a person who realizes that value. 6. Lastly, please give us some advice for your classmates at the business school. If you don't know what I like yet, try to capture the moment, not the moment of "I want to do it" but the moment of "Oh, should I?". In fact, it takes a lot of time and effort to think, "I want to do it, I'm interested". In that case, I recommend that you actively use your subconscious mind. I don't even realize it myself yet, but pay attention to the things that the unconsciousness cares about. If you happen find a noticeable poster on the Daesung-ro bulletin board, or if you notice a new class promoted by the department strangely, don't hesitate to challenge it. If it's an experience that's more mediocre than I thought, it's meaningful in its own way, and I have no doubts that it will be a great start if I'm lucky and it really suits me. In practice, grandiose plans and thoughts are not required. I will support the careful and bold choices of business school alumni who are already walking their own wonderful paths. I hope that the day will come when we meet again in society with our distinct colors and encourage each other, and even though it's a difficult time, I hope everyone takes care of their health and overcomes it. Thanks for reading this long post!

[New Professor Special] 'Be proud of what you have rather than what you lack'
-
Our college of Business is strengthening its core values of education and research, and is striving to nurture talents for student success and future value creation. To this end, four new teachers were appointed in the first semester of the 2022 school year, their majors were marketing(1 person), business information(1 person), FinTech(1 person) and management(1 person), and they were invited to be teachers with excellent competence in each field. This time, we met Professor 'Han Ji Sang' of
, a new teacher who became a family member of business school, and listened to 'major research activities, majors, and future plans' Q1. Hello, professor. Nice to meet you like this! Please introduce yourself, professor. Hello, I'm Han Ji-sang who studies consumer behavior theory in the marketing department. After completing my Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin in the United States, I have been an assistant professor at the University of Technology Sydney for the past three years, and thankfully, I became a member of Sungkyunkwan University. Q2. Please introduce your major briefly, and what made you choose your major? Marketing is the study of the process of finding and satisfying needs that have not yet been met in society. My major in consumer behavior, out of all the details of marketing, is the study of how consumers make choices, how they consume, and how they react afterwards. My major in consumer behavior, out of all the details of marketing, is the study of how consumers make choices, how they consume, and how they react afterwards. I have been interested in psychology since I was an undergraduate, especially the way people make decisions about consumption, and as I continue to study related to this, I became a Ph.D. Q3. Please tell us how you feel about your new start at Sungkyunkwan University Business School and your future plans. I want to continue my research activities and publish good papers and become a professor who is helpful to students. Q4. Please briefly introduce your class. I teach undergraduate marketing management and graduate methodology seminars. Marketing management learns the basic overview and process of corporate marketing activities. Personally, I tend to value learning through practice, so I organized a curriculum that allows students to apply the theories they learned in class to their projects and present them at the end of the semester. The methodology seminar teaches marketing and basic methodological skills necessary for graduate students to conduct research. If focuses on what a good research paper is, how to come up with research ideas, how to gather data, how to analyze it, and so on. Data analysis focuses on R. Q5. What is your research plan from now on? First of all, I want to finish the projects that I have been working on so far and start new projects with smart and hard-working students in Sungkyunkwan University. Recently, I am especially interested in consumer multitasking behavior and sensor marketing, so I would like to start new research projects with this topic. Q6. Please tell me what you think is the ideal educator. I think Andy Gershoff, my advisor at UT Austin, is the ideal educator. My advisor was a man who had a lot to learn both academically and personally. He was smart, good at his research and teaching, and good at research guidance at the level of students' eyes, and at the same time, he cared about the emotional and physical health of students. And above all, he was very humble. I kept asking for a blackboard eraser because I was going to wipe it, and the professor gave me another eraser next to me and said, "Let's clean the blackboard together then". It was probably a small incident that my advisor would not be able to remember, but it remained an anecdote that I will never forget for the rest of my life. Like my advisor, I want to be a person who does my job well and maximizes the strengths of students and never forgets humility. Q7. If you have anything you want to say to the students who are studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University Business School, please tell them! I want to tell them that they are really struggling. There are many times when I feel sad and upset when I see students who have lost their self-confidence after struggling in the fiercer competition than when I was a student. But I want to telly you not to lose confidence. Each one of you who has experienced that fierce competition is an incredible talent that you can put anywhere in the world, regardless of where you are right now(This is based on my experience of teaching in a foreign country). Even if you don't have enough time and money, I hope you have an opportunity to expand your knowledge and recharge your confidence by traveling abroad or gaining experience as an exchange student. You're doing very well and you deserve to be proud of yourself. I want you to be proud of what you are good at rather than what you lack, and develop your self-confidence. -

- An Interview with Oh Eun-ji on Participation in Management International Conference with Chinese University of Hong
-
On April 8th (Fri), a management conference was held at our business school with the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Two graduate students (Kim Yoon and Oh Eun-ji) majoring in management at our university participated in the conference and had time to present their respective research fields. We hope that these international conferences will continue through various studies in the future, and we listened to Oh Eun-ji's research field and paper.
(Advisor : Kim Young-sang) 1. Hello, please introduce yourself briefly. Hello, I'm Oh Eun-ji. I am in the Ph.D. program in the Department of Management at the Business School, and I am researching the field of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM). I'm mainly studying changes in the personnel system, the composition of human resources, the entry and exit of that composition, and ultimately how those factors affect the performance of the company. Specifically, we have been working on workforce composition, such as collective turnover and diversity. 2. Please tell me if you have any motivation to participate in this international conference. Professors majoring in management guided details such as how to run the conference in advance in the same way as an authoritative academic conference. Since it was the first international joint conference, there was a bit of a burden to submit the manuscript, but thankfully, professor Kim Young-sang, an advisor, encouraged me to study, so I was able to participate in this precious opportunity. 3. Please introduce the paper that was released this time. The study I'm going to present this time identifies how gender diversity in venture companies negatively affects the financial performance of venture companies and reveals that the human capital of the CEO, the founder and CEO of venture companies, is a factor that can alleviate this negative relationship. Specifically, the CEO's human capital was divided into three categories : entrepreneurial experience, and industry experience, and the mutual effect was confirmed. Through this study, I wanted to contribute to the diversity literature and human capital literature, and to this end, I wanted to present two major theoretical implications. First, from a diversity literature perspective, we wanted to raise the negative relationship between gender diversity and group performance within the group to the corporate level and newly verify that there is still a negative relationship at the corporate level. Second, from a human capital literature perspective, gender diversity is a potential resource from a human capital perspective, and it is also significant in that it identifies how this resource interacts with other types of resources called CEO's human capital. 4. Where there any difficulties while writing the paper? Personally, I think every step of writing a paper is hard and difficult. But to pick one, I think the most difficult process is to logically develop a hypothesis or argument on a theoretical basis. I try my best to develop the thesis so that people who have no prior knowledge in the field I major in can understand clearly even if they read the thesis, but it always seems to be lacking. 5. Please tell us about your future goals or areas you want to study. My big goal is to be a sincere researcher with a humble and warm heart in all aspects such as research, education, and student guidance, like professor Kim Young-sang, a professor of guidance, and management major. As professors have shown me in person, I want to be a humble person who studies constantly. As a small goal, I would like to conduct more research within SHRM. Specifically, I would like to conduct research on non-regular workers and pay and benefits for the rest of my P.H.D. program. -
