Choi Won-seok (entering class of 2014), in Global Management Department, has various experiences during his undergraduate years, including the 2017 National University Student Debate Gold Prize, GPA 4.5 for the previous semester, the President's Award for Outstanding Performance, CPA (1 year preparation), and Internship experience at a foreign bank. He said he wanted to help students at business schools even after graduation because the benefits he received from school were very helpful. Let's hear Choi Won-seok's story who is willing to help students’ development of capabilities and exploring careers.
1. Hello, please introduce yourself.
Hello, I'm Choi Won-seok, majoring in Global Management. After graduation, I entered Samsung Electronics as a financial worker. I had wanted to enjoy a leisurely campus life after passing the CPA exam, but it didn’t work and I graduated early in one semester because of Corona 19. Briefly saying, I also received a gold medal at the 2017 National University Student Debate Contest. It was my young ambition to raise the status of the school. 2. I heard that you will be awarded the Presidential Award for Outstanding Performance! Please tell us how you feel.
I feel like I'm getting a special congratulation when I graduate. Looking back, I often drew this moment when I was studying, but I'm very happy to see it comes true. I wish I had received this award directly at the offline graduation ceremony, but I'm sorry I couldn't.

3. You got excellent grades every semester, do you have any tips for this?
I will answer a little longer because the junior students might want to know the details.
First, registering for a course is very important. During the vacation, I looked at each professor's class plan and decided which class best fits my preference. Since I am a test-type person, I tried to avoid classes that have a high proportion of group projects or reports. I avoided classes that do not have a clear standard of grading as much as possible. I also considered the tendency of professors to give grades through the EVERY TIME lecture review. I only took the class of a Credit God/Good Rate professor who had a clear rate assessment. In other words, for good grades, you need enough time to look for a course before you apply.
Second, communication with the professor is important. I send an e-mail to the professor if I don’t get his requirements when doing group assignments or preparing for the exam. Don't be afraid of mail with your professor. If you actively communicate with your professor, he will remember your name and it could be helpful to get good grades. Even more, you could get ‘+’ at the end. Of course, it is the main points of getting good grades that you can clearly understand the intentions of professors.
Third, good relationships are important. When I got 4.5 in the first semester, I was really happy when my friends congratulated me and acknowledged me. It's really motivating to be able to congratulate someone when I'm good at it. Also, if there is a good relationship, my friends give me past exams or tell me what I missed in class. And the Global Management Department has a lot of group projects, and if you have already established a good relationship, you can bring in competent members, and there will be less conflicts while doing group projects. Don't ever get angry while doing your group project!

4. I heard that the CPA preparation period is one year. What do you think is the biggest factor in the preparation and quick passing?
As I'll tell you later, when I was an intern at a foreign bank, the person sitting next to me recommended me CPA. "When you come to the world, you have to go through with your bare fists as liberal arts major students, so it's better to carry a weapon in your hand.", these words touched me a lot. I think the biggest reason for the quick pass is my excellent grades I got every semester, which I mentioned early.
Originally, I had no intention of preparing for a CPA, but it helped me to study hard at school every semester. Thanks to this basis, I could absorb the content fast, and have a sense of modernity. "All you have to do is make it to the top 1100 in the country!", I reassured myself.
And most of all, it was very helpful to enter 'Song Hoe-heon,' the school's examination class. Fine desks and attendance system made me concentrate on my studies, and the mock test twice a month allowed me to measure my current position and set up a study strategy for which subjects to work harder on.
5. What did you feel from your internship at a foreign bank?
I was an intern at the Seoul branch of a French bank called ‘Societe Generale.’ As an intern, I felt that dealing with the number of companies fit me and I had a lot of fun at work. But what I felt was, 'I can't just study well.' I felt quite different from the atmosphere demanded by Top tier Financial Services. High grades didn't impress them very much. After I realized this, I decided to have a CPA as my own weapon.

6. If you have any other meaningful activities, programs, etc. that you have attended in the Department of Global Management, please tell me.
The Global Career Tour and Exchange Student Scholarship in the Department of Global Management are the most memorable. I've never been abroad in my life, but I went to Paris, France, for the first time while participating in a global career tour. I still can't forget the excitement of that time. I received almost all the support from the department for airfare, accommodation, and food. After finishing the Arc de Triomphe tour, it was late, so my colleagues, seniors, juniors, and professors rushed to take the subway. It seems to be a great benefit to be able to go abroad with the money from the department when I was a college student. And thanks to 'Exchange Student Scholarship', I was able to visit Germany in abundance. It is a good system that allows students who are burdened with staying abroad to go to exchange students.

7. What are your future career and goals?
I don't have a big goal because I'm still a novice in society. However, I want to be acknowledged by as many people as possible in my current job. I think it will lead me to the next opportunity. I also want to hang out with people outside my field. I want to be a person who can blend in well not seeing only a small part of the world. No matter what I do, I want to make a lot of people who are willing to follow me and work with me.
8. Lastly, please give me some advice for the students at Business School.
Make at least one story every semester and vacation. It's like the Marvel series. Marvel Studios gathered fans and created the Avengers worldview by making about three movies every year. Try to plan special experiences every time and meet new people. It's like a YouTuber struggling to make enough contents. There will be bigger and bigger stories and great people around you. I made a story that involved Samsung Dream Class, Discussion Club, National University Student Debate, Financial Association, Intern, Exchange Student, CPA exam preparation, and I met good friends, seniors who helped me, and juniors who I could help. Just like Marvel, who never disappoints the audience every time, make a world that is distinct from others and fill in a lot of stories.
