Our college of Business is strengthening its core values of education and research, and is striving to nurture talents for student success and future value creation. To this end, three new teachers were appointed in the second semester of the 2021 school year, their majors were marketing(1 person), management information(1 person), and FinTech(1 person), and they were invited to be teachers with excellent competence in each field. This time, we met Professor Chae in-young of <Marketing Major>, a new teacher who became a family member of business school, and listened to 'major research activities, majors, and future plans’
Q1. Hello, professor. Nice to meet you like this! Please introduce yourself professor.
Hello. My name is In-Young Chae, who entered Sungkyunkwan University as a marketing major. I graduated from Yousei University with an undergraduate degree in business administration and a master's degree in applied statistics. After that, I got my PhD at INSEAD in France and Singapore, and after working at Emory University in the US for 5 years, I joined Sungkyunkwan University this time.
Q2. Please briefly introduce your major, and what made you choose your major?
My major is digital marketing, and my research activities are digital advertising, word of mouth/influencer marketing, and media marketing. The methodology analyzes the direction in which consumers make decisions online and optimize them through statistical, quantitative, and big data analysis.
In fact, I have been interested in marketing since I was an undergraduate, but while I was in the campus marketing club, I thought that I had a lot of talent in finance and accounting rather than marketing. I didn't plan to study for a long time, so when I was an undergraduate, I was scheduled to work in the financial sector and get a job in the banking sector, but at the end, I changed my direction to the strategic planning headquarters of a large corporation and joined the company. While working at the company, I worked and learned in a variety of fields, and there is a lot of data in the world, but I don't know how to use it. So when I looked into it, these fields were developed a lot in marketing modeling, and I started studying again to learn them.
Interestingly, when I went to the doctoral program, I was working on a project in digital marketing with a professor who was there, so I felt that this field is a new field, so there are many new things to learn and there is a lot of potential for the future. Most of all, it's dynamic field, so I think it is fun to continue working here.
Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting anew at Sungkyunkwan University's business school and your future plans.
Many things were good while teaching at an American university, but I always had a dream about the Korean school I learned and grew up in. Among them, I'm always thankful to be able to work at such a good school. I want to meet many students, and I hope that I can become such a mentor that can be helpful now and in the future. I an not good enough, but I plan to do my best with an open mind so that the knowledge, wisdom, and insight I have learned so far can help you in the future that will lead our country in the future.
Q4. Please give a brief introduction about the class you are taking.
I'm going to teach a new class called Digital Marketing and Analytics. This class is a class that I have been teaching in Emory, and it is a class that combines various fields of global digital marketing with existing marketing theories to practice using new digital platforms. In detail, you can deal with SEO, digital advertising, and social media marketing, and learn how to understand and analyze digital data for mare systematic and practical decisions. It is a subject that students enjoy very much in terms of using Google Anlaytics, Social media listening tools, and advertising simulation. This time, it was selected as an innovative class, so my plan is to focus on classes that students learn and enjoy more than credits. This class is also very related to classes taught by Emory to managers of large companies in Atlanta, such as Delta, Hole Depot, and Coca Cola, so it will be an opportunity for students to learn what kind of things are used in American global companies.
Q5. What are your future research plans?
My plan is to continue to research like now^^ Currently, projects are in the direction of digital marketing strategies, digital advertising, and social media advertising of media company such as CNN, and most them are collaborating with large companies in the United States and faculty members in the United States. In the future, I hope that there will be many opportunities to apply the knowledge I learned in Korea. Above all, if there are students interested in this way, I hope there will be many opportunities to work together.
Q6. Please tell us about the ideal educator you think of.
This part is something I keep thinking about. I think the most rewarding thing for me at Emory was when I heard that the students got a job or got a job with what they learned in my class and it was really helpful, or when I saw the growth of students studied together. However, if an educator who is helpful in the future is the primary goal, I think it is the ultimate goal of becoming a mentor who empathizes with reality and moves forward together. And I often think that it would be nice if I could build up my strength and become a shield for students. For many students, university is the last school before they go into society, but wouldn't it be more powerful if they received a lot of protection and love before starting a difficult social life?
Q7. If there is anything you would like to say to students who are studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University Business School, please tell them!
Even if you feel hopeless in the future, light will be shining in front of you at some point. Rather than worrying in advance, I hope that you will be able to have a fun time to experience various fields, and even if it takes time, I hope you are getting closer to the path you can be happy.
