1. One of the doctoral students led by the professor, Jang Jeong-yoon, was appointed as an assistant professor of accounting at Central Connecticut State University in the United States. As an advisor, please tell us how you feel.
I'm very happy. Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon is my third disciple and she is the first one to be appointed as a professor. Of course, it is good for students to enter accounting firms or accounting-related institutions, but most of them start Ph.D. programs with the aim of appointing professors, so it is very rewarding as an advisor in that their goals have been achieved.
2. I am curious about the process of Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon's appointment as an assistant professor. It is expected that you have been very helpful as an advisor, please explain.
Since Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon came to our school as a doctoral program, she has been targeting overseas universities. However, after she got her doctorate in February 2020, she thought a lot about whether she could go abroad for various personal reasons. As the eldest in the family, she had a sense of responsibility for her parents. And with the outbreak of COVID-19, the situation got more complicated. Because many American Universities have withdrawn or postponed their plans to appoint professors. I didn't ask in detail, but I think she had enough conversation with her family. After that, she started looking into it in earnest. Actually, I didn't do much as an advisor. I don't think there's anything other than trying to write recommendations well and praying. I wasn't very worried because she had a lot of experience in teaching at various foreign companies and universities instructors, but I'm glad she was appointed as a professor as soon as she got her degree.
3. As an advisor and Ph.D. student, I think the professor and Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon studied a lot together.
The amount of research was not a concern in the first place, as we were targeting overseas universities from the start. I've said many times that the quality of research is much more important, so focus on making a good thesis. So far, no joint research has been published with me. One paper has been submitted to the SSCI journal, and the work to make the doctoral thesis a journal paper will begin in earnest after Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon established herself to some extent in the United States.
4. What kind of student was Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon
She is cheerful, polite, humble, and happy when I meet her. It was also nice to contact me first and have lunch together, and to take the lead in contacting other guidance students on Teacher's Day to form a meeting. Because we trust each other, we often talked about our insides. I often hear that I am blessed, and I think that's right when I look at Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon and other my guidance students.
5. Like Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon, there are many students who want to go to graduate school and take the path of professors abroad or in Korea, so please say something that will help these students.
In the case of accounting, most of the students who graduated before have been hired by domestic universities, but it has become difficult to hire professors over the past three to four years. I don't know how the situation will change in the future, but I recommend that you think about targeting overseas universities from the start of your Ph.D. program like Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon. Even for those whose ultimate goal is to become a professor at a domestic university, it can be much more advantageous if they gain experience from an overseas university. The appointment of domestic universities should pay attention not only to the quality of research but also to the quantity, but in the case of overseas universities, only to pay attention to the quality of research. I think it's possible if you focus on one detailed research field during your Ph.D. program and systematically improve your English under a mid-to long-term plan. I really want you to know that accounting is still in great demand from universities around the world for Ph.D. students.
