Building on a foundational understanding of the optical properties of semiconductors, students will explore the principles and structures of various semiconductor junction optoelectronic devices, including light-emitting diodes (LEDs), laser diodes, photodiodes, and solar cells. The course also addresses devices such as field-effect transistors (FETs) and bipolar junction transistors (BJTs), which are used to drive or amplify these optoelectronic components. By providing essential knowledge and skills in the design, fabrication, and practical application of optoelectronic devices, this course aims to cultivate expertise in the field of optoelectronics.

AI-Based Engineering Research Methods is a one-credit course for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students across disciplines. It builds research competencies for the AI era by treating AI not as a simple tool, but as a research assistant to be used critically, transparently, and responsibly. The course covers changes in methodology, principles, and limits of generative AI; topic exploration; literature search; review of prior studies; gap identification; questions and hypotheses; research design; data collection; analysis planning; visualization; proposal writing; AI-use documentation; ethics; and data security. It also addresses risks such as hallucinations, bias, fabricated citations, outdated information, privacy concerns, and data leakage. Students apply AI tools by developing topics, search strategies, literature maps, research questions, and data collection and analysis plans. The final outcome is an AI Research Portfolio documenting topic exploration, gap identification, methodology, output verification, ethical review, and reflection. The course supports responsible AI-assisted research while preserving critical thinking, integrity, and the researcher’s role.

At the end of the lecture, students formulate and present a plan for starting a virtual biotechnology company.

This course is an online research methodology course designed to help students in the College of Natural Sciences use generative AI and large language models effectively and responsibly throughout the research process. Rather than being limited to a specific major, the course covers common research tasks performed by natural science researchers, including research topic development, literature review, data organization, analytical support, academic writing and scientific figure preparation, presentation design, research ethics, and verification methods. Through this course, students will develop the ability to use generative AI not merely as a tool for generating answers, but as a research assistant for refining research questions, critically examining literature and data, logically communicating research findings, and verifying research outputs.
