※ Starting from the Spring Semester of the 2025, the composition of thesis/dissertation committee members will require approval by the Graduate School Committee. As per university regulations, please ensure that you adhere to the guidelines for the composition of the pre defense committee. Due to the newly added approval process, there will be no extension to the application period, nor will there be an additional application period.

The method and schedule for submitting application documents for Main defense of Master's and Ph.D thesis for the Fall semester of 2025 are as follows, so please apply to GLS within the deadline.

1. Application Period : October 20(Mon) to October 27(Mon)

※All of the requirements for the Pre-Defense proposal should be produced out by the deadline above.

2. Target : Those who are scheduled to undergo the Main Thesis Defense (본 심사) this semester.

3. Eligibility Requirements

【Master's Program】

- Completed 21 credits or more with a GPA of 3.0 (B) or higher.

- Received a recommendation from the thesis advisor.

- Passed the Preliminary Thesis Defense.

- Passed the Thesis Qualification Exam (Foreign Language).

- Passed the Thesis Qualification Exam (Major), satisfying the internal regulations.

- Completed the Safety Education (must be completed every semester).

- Completed the course Thesis Writing and Research Ethics.

【Ph.D. Program】

- Completed 33 credits or more (including all prerequisite courses) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

- Received a recommendation from the thesis advisor.

- Passed the Preliminary Thesis Defense.

- Passed the Thesis Qualification Exam (Foreign Language).

-Passed the Thesis Qualification Exam (Major), satisfying the internal regulations.

- Completed the Safety Education (must be completed every semester).

- Completed the course Thesis Writing and Research Ethics.

【Integrated Master's-Ph.D. Program】

- Completed 51 credits or more (including all prerequisite courses) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

- Received a recommendation from the thesis advisor.

- Passed the Preliminary Thesis Defense.

- Passed the Thesis Qualification Exam (Foreign Language).

- Passed the Thesis Qualification Exam (Major), satisfying the internal regulations.

- Completed the Safety Education (must be completed every semester).

- Completed the course Thesis Writing and Research Ethics.

(1) In the case of Korean patent application (registration)

(2) In the case of publication of papers at international journals/conferences or Korean domestic journals

- A first page copy of published papers(Including journals title and publication date, Author(with advisor), Author’s Affiliation(SKKU) 

4) Safety Instruction complete confirmation form + Evidences(Certificate)

- Attached Document: Certificate of safety education. You can print at  http://safety.skku.edu/

- Safety education must be completed every semester from admission to this semester.

5) External Committee Member Personal Information + Evidences(Only if you have external member)

5. How to Apply

1) Download the application form (※ Please be sure to use the form attached to the notice.)

※If you have Co-advisor, please use the form for “Co-advisor”.

2) Fill the form and obtain the signature of committee members and advisor professor

3) “Apply for Main-defense” through GLS System

① Go to “GLS-신청/자격관리-학위논문심사신청-논문본심신청/신청결과조회” menu

② Insert the Title of the thesis/dissertation

③ Scan and Upload the completed form(with document of evidence) as a PDF file to the each section. (File name: Student ID_Name_Title)

④  Insert the advisor and committee member

※If you have a co-advisor, please insert both advisors in the GLS system.

※ If you have external committee member, Please fill the “External ommittee Member Personal Information” form, and attached “Certificate of employment” or “Evidence of research performance” or “Screenshot of Institution homepage” as a PDF file

⑤Click to “접수신청”

⑥Graduate Office confirmation and approval

⑦Print the “접수증”, and Payment(transfer) the main-defense fee

※Fee for Main Defense: 100,000 Won for Master's, 510,000 Won for PhD and Combined.

※ Payment deadline: ~ October 30(Thu) 2025

※ Application for Defense is canceled if defense fee is not paid

6. Important Notes

1. Due to an amendment to the school regulations, starting from the Fall Semester of the 2025 academic year, Honorary Professors cannot be appointed as thesis advisors.

2. An approval process by the Graduate Committee has been added for the assignment of thesis advisors and the composition of examination committees.

① If the composition of the thesis advisor or the examination committee does not comply with the regulations (school rules), approval for the committee may be denied.

② If you plan to constitute the advisor or committee members in a way that does not strictly comply with the regulations, you must contact the department office in advance to confirm whether the assignment and composition are possible.

③ Please begin the thesis defense process only after receiving approval from the Graduate Committee. Be aware that due to this added procedure, an extension or additional operation of the defense application period will not be possible.
