The internal regulations regarding the Department of Computer Science and Engineering Master's and Ph.D. Program / Combined (Master’s & Ph.D.) Qualifying Examination (Major) have been revised. We are providing the following information, so students should refer to it for related matters.

1. Reason for Revision

- StanStandardization of research achievement recognition criteria for the Department of Computer Science and Engineering Qualifying Exam(Major).

- Prevention of confusion by standardizing the nomenclature of conference tiers within the passing criteria (Outstanding · Excellent).

2. Detailed Revisions

- Change in the recognized research achievement list (‘College of Computing and Informatics List of Excellent International Conferences in Computer Science’).

- Standardization of conference tier names to 'Outstanding' and 'Excellent' to prevent confusion with the existing list.

- Introduction of a research achievement point system and changes to the recognition method within the Master's program graduation requirements.

- Addition of research achievement categories for the Master's program to include patent registration.

3. Applicable Targets

- Master's : Students admitted in 2026 or later (However, students admitted before 2026 may choose between the existing requirements and the new 2026 requirements).

- Ph.D. Program / Combined (Master’s & Ph.D.) : Students admitted in 2026 or later.

1) Master’s program

Common Requirements

Major Knowledge

Research Achievements

Students must satisfy both the Major Knowledge and Research Achievement requirements listed below.

Research must be as the first author, indicating affiliation with Sungkyunkwan University and the advisor (at least one in case of co-advising).

For patents or program registrations, if no first inventor/developer is specified, the student's name must appear first in the registrant section, excluding the advisor.

In the case of co-first authors, only one student may be recognized at the advisor's discretion.

Evidence should ideally be based on publication, but acceptance notices are also valid.

Major Knowledge Requirement: Obtain a grade of A or higher in at least 2 major courses (Excluding: IT Technology Seminar, IT English Paper Writing & Research Ethics).

※ If the requirement is not met: One additional paper (as first author) must be submitted.: Separate from the research achievement requirements, one additional paper in either a domestic A-class journal or an international conference must be submitted.

The sum of the following points must be 0.4 or higher:

Outstanding International Conference Paper: First author (3 pts), Co-author (0.8 pts)

Excellent International Conference Paper: First author (2 pts), Co-author (0.5 pts)

SCI(E) or SSCI Journal Paper: First author (Top 20% or higher: 2 pts, Below top 20%: 1 pt), Co-author (0.4 pts)

Other International Conference Paper: First author (0.4 pts), Co-author (0.1 pts)

KCI-listed Domestic Journal Paper: First author (0.4 pts), Co-author (0.1 pts)

SCOPUS Journal Paper: First author (0.4 pts), Co-author (0.1 pts)

International Patent Registration: First inventor (excluding advisor) (1.5 pts)

Domestic Patent Registration: First inventor (excluding advisor) (0.5 pts)

Submission of a paper (as first author) corresponding to an Outstanding/Excellent international conference or JCR journal Q2 or higher, with the advisor's approval (0.4 pts)

Passing the Major Oral Qualifying Examination by the advisor with the permission of the Department Chair (Final approval is determined by the Graduation Steering Committee)

※ Note: Students admitted before 2026 may choose to follow the requirements for those admitted in 2026 or later as stated above.

2) Ph.D. Program / Combined (Master’s & Ph.D.) Program

Common Requirements

Major Knowledge

Research Achievements

Students must satisfy both the Major Knowledge and Research Achievement requirements listed below.

Research must be as the first author, indicating affiliation with Sungkyunkwan University and the advisor (at least one in case of co-advising).

For patents or program registrations, if no first inventor/developer is specified, the student's name must appear first in the registrant section, excluding the advisor.

Evidence should ideally be based on publication, but acceptance notices are also valid.

Major Knowledge Requirement : Those who have obtained a grade of A or higher in at least 4 major courses (For MS-PhD Combined course, at least 6 major courses with a grade of A or higher).(Excluding: IT Technology Seminar, IT English Paper Writing & Research Ethics)

※ If the requirement is not met: One additional paper must be submitted for every 2 unmet courses (6 credits).: Separate from the research achievement requirements, one paper in an SCI(E) journal or a Excellent or higher international conference must be submitted.

The sum of the following points must be 3.0 or higher(Must include at least one paper from categories ①, ②, or ③ as the first author)
