Founded in 1965, the school has been committed to providing high quality education and research activities to promote the growth of petroleum and chemical industries. In response to the diversified challenges from many advanced chemical engineering fields, the scope has evolved over the years to encompass broader disciplines pertaining to nanotechnology, biotechnology, semiconuctor, energy and environment. The school has to date 7,005 alumni including 423 M.S. and 73 Ph.D. graduates who have contributed to various fields in industry and also in the engineering infrastructure of South Korea.
The school is geared to prepare for many different professional challenges of the 21st century by merging with the Department of Textile Engineering and Department of Polymer Science and Engineering (To see more detailed program about Polymer Science, go to Polymer Science webpage).
This merger placed the school as the largest chemical engineering program in Korea with 41 full-time tenure track faculty members and annual intake of more than 752 undergraduate students (with 28% of them females) of the highest calibre among all the engineering schools/departments at Sungkyunkwan University.
School in Detail
1. Courses and Curriculums
The major courses and curriculums of the school are categorized in four main parts as follows;
-
(1) Bio and Environmental Technology : The intergration of chemical engineering principles with biology has seen synergistic effects on better understanding and analysis of exquisite biochemical phenomena, facilitating their engineering application in virtually all areas. Our research is directed towards the scalable protein refolding process design, biomineralization based hybrid nanoparticle synthesis, bioprocess intensification, biosensors and bioelectronics; design and application of engineered biomolecules, bioinspired nanopatterning; bioremediation, bioenergy, bioremediation and bionano analytical device design.
-
(2) Materials Technology : Development of new materials is a core technology that has walked together with human history and technological movements. Studies on modern technology of new materials focuses on the extraction of synergistic properties through a fusion of individual materials, which requires a profound understanding of the chemistry as a fundamental of the material, and chemical engineering as a toolkit for the realization. Our research group is fully constructing systematic resources for materials design, synthesis, characterization and manipulation, particularly based on the specialized organic and polymeric materials, from which we are directing the development of versatile materials for biomedical, electronic and industrial applications.
-
(3) Energy Technology : Green energy is currently attracting extensive interest from researchers who envision a new energy source to be a renewable, clean and promising way to use the sun, wind and water at low cost, and with an infinite supply of natural resources due to the exhaustion of fossil fuel generating greenhouse gas and environmental disruption. Our group focuses on research and education in not only energy systems including hydrogen production, solar cell, fuel cells, and energy storage devices, but also nanostructured materials for various kinds of energy devices.
-
(4) Microelectronics, Display, and Solar Cells : The semiconductor and displays industry of Korea is leading global technology and solar cell industry in this fast growing in 21st century, such as fabrication processes for semiconductor and display devices, and nano-scale. Our research and education is focused on various micro- and nano-scale chemical process and material development both for silicon and organic devices. Current research topics include printing and all-solution process development for organic lighting and organic solar cells, plasma surface reaction and reactor design, fuel cells, electro-plating, MEMS/NEMS, and dye-sensitized solar cells.

2. Facilities, Resources and Funding
Students in College of Engineering can use the studying rooms, libraries and networks freely in Engineering building (II)
3. Scholarships
There are two types of scholarship avaliable;
-
(1) "General Scholarships" - offered to students who earned a minimum of 11 major course credits in the previous semester
-
(2) "Alumni Fund Scholarships" - donated by alumni or organizations
Why Choose Us?
We run one of the graduate programs under a special government funding scheme known as Brain Korea 21 (BK21) since 2006, and further as Brain Korean 21 Plus (BK21 Plus) since 2013.
Furthermore, the average annual research expenditure per faculty member exceeds 5 million USD, among the top 5 in Korea, rendering the department equipped with state-of-the art facilities and infrastructure for world-class research and education.
Currently, more than 160 graduate students (with 15 % from overseas) are actively conducting several research projects at the forefront of a variety of advanced chemical engineering and interdisciplinary fields in close collaboration with many domestic and international research institutions. Most of the graduates go for further studies or move on to key positions helping to shape our economy and nation over the last few decades.
We are fortunate to have a close bond with our alumni and utilize this relationship to further strengthen our program. To keep pace with the rising trend of Sungkyunkwan University in 2016, SKKU Cheme has ranked 51-100th in the chemical engineering sectoral studies from QS rankings, and also has received the highest rating from the department assessment of Korea’s major daily newspaper Joong-Ang Daily.
We hope that prospective and current students, academic and industrial colleagues, and others will find our school an ideal place, capable of providing every single opportunity to strive for their future.
Come join us and be a part of the future, today!
