In the 21st century, instead of following the much explored path of traditional thinking, we must creatively build upon the foundation of available information and knowledge and demonstrate adaptability. In this new paradigm our Polymer Science and Engineering Department plans to lead changes in this field in the 21st century, by focusing on the polymeric materials for IT, BT, NT and ET industrial fields, and by further strengthening our academic curriculum and research facilities. In the near future, our department will re-establish our leadership position in research and education in the College of Engineering through aggressive research activities and closer co-operation with private sector companies.
The success of our students in the future strictly will of course, depend on their individual dedication, aggressive attitude and enterprising spirit. However, our department can offer students all the tools necessary to meet the challenges in this field.
Korea is ranked 5th in the world in the production of polymeric materials. However, the country still lags in the field of advanced and higher value-added functional polymeric materials. Therefore, the demand for engineers trained in specialized plastics is still growing and the future of the graduates of our department is promising. Our students will have a good opportunity for obtaining the necessary skills and network in this exciting field through our departmental professors' enthusiastic lectures and personal supervision of their research requirement for MS and PhD degrees. The future of modern technology can be described as a single word "convergence". All of the emerging technologies including NT, IT, and BT is strongly requiring for the realization of hybridizing various related technologies in harmony.
Department in Detail
1. Courses and Curriculums
Our curriculum covers all the necessary basics for a successful academic and industrial currier in polymer science and engineering fields. The lecture and experimental modules offered in our department can be classified into six different categories. Thermodynamics, Reaction Kinetics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Physical Chemistry I & II, and Organic Chemistry I & II are offered for the basic skills as an engineer.
In polymer synthesis and chemistry fields, Polymer Chemistry I & II, Molecular Engineering, and Polymer Materials Chemistry are offered. For the understanding of physical and mechanical properties of polymers, polymer properties and structure I & II and polymers in everyday life are available. In the case of polymer processing, Polymer processing, Polymer rheology, and numerical analysis for polymer engineers are open for your choice. Instrumental analysis of polymer, Polymer Chemistry Lab I & II, Polymer Property Lab I & II, and Understanding of Polymeric Materials, are lab courses for hands on experience in polymer science and engineering. For the coverage of recent development in the polymer related fields, Polymeric Materials in Electronics, Environment and Polymers, and Polymeric Materials for Biological Applications are offered.
2. Research and Funding
Engineers for the future should be exposed not only to their majors but also to many related fields. Our MS and Ph.D. programs also offer interdisciplinary courses between material science/polymer science and chemical engineering/polymer processing, to satisfy the increasing demands of the converging technologies through the full financial support from research programs and the government.
Our department's pre-imminent position was recognized by being selected as a specialized research team within SKKU from 1999 to 2004. Through this recognition, we received research funding from the Korean Ministry of Education to become part of their core research center program. The research activities of 7 professors in our department span a wide spectrum from the BK 21 project to other national research programs supported by KRF, KOSEF and MOST (national organization). Our students can easily stay abreast of pioneering technologies and research methods through the enthusiastic lectures of our professors and their personal supervision for BS and MS thesis. Graduates of our program will be well-equipped to understand and participate in the novel research fields that will lead the advanced technology of KOREA.
3. Special Entry Requirements (Graduate)
In 1996, the first master's degree candidates entered the graduate school of our Polymer Science Department, and graduated in 1998. Since then, most of our MS graduates have established themselves in the private sectors of polymer related field as leading engineers. Some of our MS graduates have continued their academic pursuits by studying advanced courses, including Ph.D. courses, in our department and other universities in Korea as well as abroad (e.g., Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan and MaxPlanc Research Institute in Germany).
Why Choose Us?
Further Information and Future Careers
In the department of Polymer Science and Engineering, 7 full-time tenure track faculty members and more than 294 alumni are actively conducting many research projects at a variety of advanced polymer science/engineering and interdisciplinary fields in close collaboration with many domestic and international research institutions.
Our department has the largest and most well established Polymer Science and Engineering Program in the country. Polymers are widely used in the manufacture of products that we use in our daily lives. The companies that manufacture these products have a need for engineers that understand how plastics materials behave so that these products can be designed, tested and manufactured. This program is designed to prepare the graduate for a professional career as a engineer or researcher. Since the opening of our department, graduates have been employed by companies throughout Korea. These companies include; electronics, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and automobile manufacturers as well as major petrochemical and plastic manufacturer.
