Dual Degree Program

Dual Degree Programs

The GBA offers dual degree programs to students who have completed their second year in SKKU. GBA collaborates with prestigious institutions such as the Kelly School of Business at Indiana University (http://kelley.iu.edu) in the United States and Emlyon Business School(https://em-lyon.com/en) in France.

For the dual degree program with Kelly School of Business, GBA exclusively offers an outbound program. This enables GBA students to earn two bachelor’s degrees, one from SKKU GBA and the other from the Kelley Business School. The dual degree initiative commenced in 2008, with the first batch of SKKU GBA students dispatched to the Kelley School of Business in 2011. Notably, approximately five students are newly dispatched to the Kelley School of Business each year.

The Kelley Business School, situated in Bloomington, Indiana, consistently ranks in the top 10 of national business schools. Renowned for its excellent career management, robust curriculum, and global faculty, Kelley Business School maintains an A+ rating in Business Week's annual management evaluation. In cases of multiple degrees, students are responsible for personal payment of tuition and living expenses at U.S. universities, while tuition at Sungkyunkwan University is covered in full as a scholarship.

For the dual degree program with Emlyon Business School, GBA facilitates both Outbound and Inbound programs. Starting from the fall semester of 2023, SKKU GBA began welcoming students from Emlyon. The inaugural dispatch of SKKU GBA students to Emlyon is anticipated in the spring semester of 2025.

Emlyon Business School, established in 1872 by the Lyon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is a private higher-education institution recognized by the French State. As one of the oldest business schools in Europe, Emlyon is in the top 1% of global business schools accredited by AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA, solidifying its status as a global-ranking school of business and management.

Through these dual-degree programs, students gain the unique advantage of cultivating their identity and network as alumni of both universities. Furthermore, this experience broadens their global perspectives and provides valuable opportunities for pursuing careers on an international scale.

    Why Dual Degree Program?

  • Why Dual Degree Program?

When I reached the end of the first year of college, many of my colleagues left to fulfill their mandatory army requirement and I began to contemplate about the rest of my college career. What I really wanted out of my college experience was an in-depth experience in which I would be able to immerse myself in an American environment and culture where English is a primary language. While the student exchange program offers such an experience, the limitation on courses which can be transferred to SKKU GBA would delay my graduation. Additionally, the program I was after was an involvement within the American society, not a a set of courses grouping a body of foreign students together. Altogether, the offer was as a whole unappealing. When I was informed of the dual degree program, I fell head over heels. It was convenient because all credits taken in the foreign university were guaranteed to be transferred to SKKU GBA and even allowed fast track routes for earlier graduation. Moreover, unlike a student exchange program of only one or, at most, two semester term, the dual degree program had a longer duration period for not only an academic experience but also a cultural experience. I wished to be able to participate in various types of student associations and campus activities, some of which are closed to exchange students but are open for student under dual degree program.

  • Why Kelley School of Business of Indiana University?

The facts really explain it all. Kelley School of Business of Indiana University ranked 8th in the 2014 Business Undergraduate category according to Bloomberg Business Week and ranked 1st in satisfaction of employer category. In addition, Kelley School of Business is the target school of Ernst&Young, one of the largest accounting firms where top most competitive graduate students gather to follow their career path in the field of Accounting and/or Finance. Personally, I endeavored to study and set my career in the sector of Accounting and Finance. No doubt, Kelley School of Business was the perfect choice for me.

After completing basic major course requirements of I-Core and Global Core, students then take courses concentrated on their choice of major and/or minor. The majors available are Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Operation, Management, Business Economics, Public Policy, Entrepreneurship. Available minors are International Business, Sustainable Business, and Technology. Unlike Korean universities, the courses are graded with absolute evaluation rather than normative evaluation. Therefore, the class environment emphasizes self-competition instead student-to-student competition. Personally, I was very satisfied with the intensive selective subject curriculum which has a long history in the Kelley School of Business.

I was a member of Beta Alpha Psi, a nonprofit, international honors organization for accounting, finance, and information systems. Additionally, I actively participated in Food Bank volunteer work, Habitat for Humanity volunteer work, networking parties, and lectures given by special guests every week. One of the most unique experiences was taking private cello lessons from students studying in Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University which is one of the best college of music in the U.S. I highly recommend those who are interested in learning an instrument or who know how to play an interest to take private music lessons because the lesson fees are comparatively much cheaper in the U.S. than in Korea.

I would like to most emphasize the opportunity of being able to specialize in the area of Finance because such concentrative curriculums are hard to achieve in Korean universities. I was able to focus in one sector of business that I was most interested in, learn even further in-depth through subordinate categories that comprise the subject of finance, and develop close relationships with my professors. I also had the chance to undergo several job interviews which gave me a glimpse of the application process to U.S. corporations and gained information of numerous career tracks, some of which I never knew of before. Students studying in Korea are unsure of what track is best for themselves and have difficulty deciding between going to graduate school, obtaining a job immediately after graduation, or studying for a certificate like CPA. Through not only the academia and mentorship with professors, but also through networking with students from different cultural backgrounds and interests, attending Kelley School of Business really gave me a much wider view of the opportunities that are before me.
