The 2024 Pre-University Program for the Department of Global Business, the first official event for all new students, was held over two days from Thursday, February 22 to Friday, February 23, 2024. This year's program was conducted in a hybrid format (online and offline), with most freshmen from the class of 2024 attending in person despite the cold weather, allowing them to spend time with their peers and receive important information.
On the first day, February 22, the program began with an introduction from the pre-university assistants and a welcome message from professor Oh Jong-min, the chair of the Global Business Department. Professor Oh Jong-min greeted the new students by saying, "There are many alumni from the Global Business Department who are excelling in various fields. I hope you will take advantage of the diverse programs and experiences offered by our department to choose the career path you desire."
Following this, the new students introduced themselves in 30-second intervals to get to know each other. After the introductions, they shared a meal at designated locations to get to know each other. In the afternoon, there were sessions designed to provide useful information from senior students about navigating university life, known as the "Global Business Guide" session, and special lectures from seniors.
Jung Jae-eun, a pre-university assistant, led the "Global Business Guide" session, providing useful information about the school and department websites for necessary announcements, an introduction to the campus facilities, and transportation options.
Following this, Kim Ji-min, another pre-university assistant and senior student, gave a special lecture about various aspects of university life, including clubs, academic societies, and major courses within the Global Business Department. She emphasized the various activities available to the freshmen and different learning opportunities.
Subsequently, the administration office provided an overview of essential academic systems that all new Sungkyunkwan university students should know, including registration, leave of absence/return procedures, graduation requirements, and scholarship programs.
The last event of the first day was the introduction of student clubs, which garnered significant interest from the freshmen. Representatives from the student council and various department clubs promoted their activities and recruitment schedules.
On the second day, February 23, the program began with a special lecture by Professor Kim Young-han. As a finance professor in the business school, Kim Young-han shared insights and activities of alumni to help students start their 20s on the right foot. Following the lecture, students spent lunch time getting more comfortable with each other, having moved past the initial nervousness
In the afternoon, there was a session on course registration guidance and a timetable planning Q&A, essential for new students who were about to experience the course registration process for the first time. Pre-university assistants and current students provided explanations, helping freshmen plan their schedules and prepare for the upcoming course registration without any issues.
After a short break, there were special lectures from students who had experienced dual degrees, double majors, and exchange programs.
Byeon In-gyu, currently at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business for a dual degree, shared information about the partner school, application procedures, and reasons for choosing a dual degree
Lee Chang-jin, who led the double major lecture, explained the advantages and information about double majors, while also sharing his own university life stories to keep the session engaging
Kim Seo-ha, who conducted the exchange student lecture, explained the exchange student program and its preparation process. She also shared her experiences in classes, campus life, and travel during her exchange, encouraging students to consider this opportunity.
Lastly, Park Jun-ho, who was a freshman last year, shared his experiences with first-year major courses. He provided details on the types of courses, how to approach them, and offered guidance to students who might feel overwhelmed by the university studies.
The two-day program concluded with a prize draw and a closing ceremony. Prizes were distributed to energize the students after the packed schedule, and the pre-university assistants and administration office expressed their gratitude to the students. The event ended with a group photo and the distribution of souvenirs, marking the end of the Pre-University Program.
