Topics cover the anatomy, physiology and behavior of mice and their husbandry and care, anesthesia, euthanasia, and basic practical training techniques (handling of mice, injection and surgery). In addition, this course includes the practice of germ cell isolation, in vitro fertilization, early embryo development, neural stem cell isolation, gene delivery into mammalian cells and brain tissue analysis.

The primary goal of this class is to learn basic experimental techniques for examination of immune activity exhibited by immune cells and lymphoid tissues. To this end, students will learn how to measure immune activities based on gene expression and molecular changes in immune cells such as macrophages, dendritic cells, T and B cells that are critical for defending bacterial or viral infections, controlling autoimmune diseases, and immune surveillance against tumor development. Specifically, students will learn the process of isolating certain types of immune cells from lymphoid tissues, in vitro cell culture method for primary immune cells, flow cytometry, ELISA, real-time PCR and western blotting, etc. In addition, students will learn how to assess mouse models of diseases for developing therapy by immune regulation.

The goal of this lab course is to provide students with hands-on experience in biomaterial laboratory works including (1) biomaterials synthesis, (2) modification and characterization, (3) cell/organoid culture, (4) histological analysis, (5) operation of instruments(UV/Vis, rheometer, fluorescence microscopy, fluorometer, HPLC, NMR, Mass spectrometery), and (6) data analysis and interpretation. Through this course, students will (1) understand the chemical, mechanical and biological properties of biomaterials, (2) learn basic skills to synthesize and characterize biomaterials based on theory and practice (3) see recent trends in the application of biomaterials that can interact with living systems.
