The primary goal of this class is to learn basic experimental techniques for examination of immune activity exhibited by immune cells and lymphoid tissues. To this end, students will learn how to measure immune activities based on gene expression and molecular changes in immune cells such as macrophages, dendritic cells, T and B cells that are critical for defending bacterial or viral infections, controlling autoimmune diseases, and immune surveillance against tumor development. Specifically, students will learn the process of isolating certain types of immune cells from lymphoid tissues, in vitro cell culture method for primary immune cells, flow cytometry, ELISA, real-time PCR and western blotting, etc. In addition, students will learn how to assess mouse models of diseases for developing therapy by immune regulation. | |||||||||
