- Meeting for foreign freshmen parents The meeting for parents of foreign freshmen was held online at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 25. Considering the language and time difference, about 60 parents of Chinese students attended the meeting. At the meeting, Sungkyunkwan University President Shin Dong-Ryeol and Dean of University College Hong Seung-Woo etc. attended to introduce Sungkyunkwan University's vision, major departments, and foreign student support systems. Foreign parents were also very interested in their children's school. They asked questions about the development direction of schools and departments, curriculum, academic management, COVID-19 countermeasures, scholarships and dormitories. After meeting, Sungkyunkwan University plans to deliver commemorative books and letters written by foreign parents to freshmen. Sungkyunkwan University said, “We organized the meeting to have a sense of belonging and to form a consensus by sharing information about school life. We will continue to hold parent participation programs and try to have opportunities to communicate.”

- President’s List Awards Ceremony On December 15 (Wednesday), the office of Student Affairs held the 「President’s List」 awards at the International Hall of Humanities and Social Sciences Campus. President Dong Ryeol Shin, Vice-president of HSSC Joon Mo Cho, and President of Graduate School Gi Heon Kwon attended to encourage and congratulate the students. 「President’s List」 of this year was suggested by the colleges and the Student Success Center. A total of 29 students were selected, including 22 undergraduate students and 7 graduate students. Selected students are given the president's medal and commendation, souvenirs, award record entries, and privileges of community activities and support for the winners. 「President’s List」 is introduced in 2019 ▲to discover talented people who spread a positive influence on others and the community through cultivating a Self-directedness, Creativity, and Spirit of Challenge with 修己治人(su-gyi-chi-in), which means philosophy of self-cultivation through respect for the dignity and governance of people with the purpose of bringing peace to humankind, ▲to seek out the student success stories pursuing the balance of outcomes and processes and ▲to build and expand the SKKU student success model. Jeongwoo Chae, a student in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, who was selected as「President’s List」, said, “I have experience of studying at a foreign university and seeing the world through exchange program, and thanks to the mentoring system, I was also in a position to hand down knowledge and know-how. Thanks to the professor’s 24/7 office and laboratory, my curiosity became a foundation for research. In the future, I will become a person who can give a positive energy and share the benefits that I had received. I’ll also carry out my responsibility by giving back the love to those who had supported me for the past days.” The parents of an economic student Jinyoung Yoo, who participated in the awards ceremony said, “I would like to thank the professors of Economics, especially Professor Doojin Ryu who gave this precious award to Jinyoung and has always been a great mentor. I believe that this award will be a huge encouragement for her when she faces difficulties while pursuing her dream.”

- From November 1st, classes with fewer than 40 students will be held offline - Allow to conduct offline classes if the instructor and all students agree - Conduct mixing online and offline classes if some students agree - Minimize any confusion by sufficiently consulting with the instructor and students, and selecting the class management method Sungkyunkwan University (President Dong-Ryeol Shin) announces that classes with fewer than 40 students will be held online from November 1st (Mon) if the instructor and all students agree with the implementation of offline classes. If some students disagree with the implementation of offline classes, the class will be conducted online and offline. For the classes with more than 40 students, classes can be conducted online and offline under the condition that the number of students participating in offline classes is kept below 40. This measure of expanding offline classes is in accordance with the government’s “living with COVID-19” strategy. Sungkyunkwan University has taken measures to allow instructors and students to choose how to operate the class with sufficient consultation between instructors and students in order to minimize any confusion during transition period. Sungkyunkwan University has conducted offline classes for experiments, practices, and small classes with less than 10 students since October 5th (Tue).

- - Starting Oct 5 (Tue), in-person classes will resume for experiments, practice and performance courses, and small classes with 10 or less students - Planning to gradually expand in-person academic activities considering the easing of social distancing and vaccination rate Starting October 5 (Tue), Sungkyunkwan University (President Dong-Ryeol Shin) announces that it will implement in-person academic activities, including experiments, practice and performance courses, small classes. This is a measure in accordance with the Ministry of Education’s recommendation to expand the proportion of in-person classes as a result of the achievement of 70% of the nation’s first-shot vaccination rate. Sungkyunkwan university offers in-person classes for experiments, practice and performance courses, small classes with 10 or less students. In addition, theoretical classes with more than 10 students will be conducted hybrid under the condition that the number of participants in-person classes is kept below 10. Those in-person academic activities are not mandatory and in-person classes are offered under the judgement of the instructor. Sungkyunkwan University also announced a smart quarantine plan for quarantine management of in-person classes. The electronic attendance system will be used to check the density of real-time classrooms, and the number of students will be dispersed by simultaneously conducting hybrid classes using recording classrooms. Additionally, it plans to secure a safe distance between students and conduct quarantine through managing seats in the classroom. Furthermore, Sungkyunkwan University plans to gradually expand in-person academic activities in the future if social distancing is eased or the Ministry of Education’s quarantine guidelines considering vaccination rates are changed.

- Our university (SKKU), met on Metaverse and held a World Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest to compete in Korean skill. -More than 800 people have participated in the Asia and Europe regional tournaments, which have been held online since last year.-On Wednesday, August 11, Twenty-five gold, silver and bronze winners from each regional tournament participated in the final. -Due to COVID-19, the contest was held using Metaverse, ZOOM, and eX-campus. Our university announced that ‘The First World Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest’ was held on Wednesday, August 11. In order to promote the excellence of Korean to the world, communicate with people around the world through Korean, and spread Korea's unique values, our university has held a writing contest in Europe, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia for the past 14 years. Students from all over the world who love Korean are proud of their abilities. Due to COVID-19, a total of six regional competitions have been held online since last year, with about 800 foreign students living in each region participating. Twenty-five gold, silver and bronze winners from each regional tournament participated in the final. In order to run the contest, our university used the Metaverse platform ‘ifland’, the remote video conferencing system ‘ZOOM’ and our university's open learning platform ‘eX-campus’. Before Writing Contest, Students from around the world, including China, Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Turkey, and Uzbekistan, met in Metaverse, danced to BTS music, took pictures of Myeongnyundang, and wrote essays on ‘Balance.’ The awards ceremony was held at ZOOM on Friday, August 13. Song Liruiyi(China) won the first prize(Jang-Won) in the contest. The judges said, "The student successfully described ‘balance’ and ‘dreams’ in a good way." She said, “Recently, with graduation coming up, I've been thinking a lot about the balance between ‘what I want’ and ‘what I want around me.’ I'm studying International Trade, but I also want to challenge my dream of becoming a musician.” Also, Vu Hoai Lan(Vietnam), Zhang Yuhao(China) won the second prize(A-Won), and Jin Enzhen(China), Jin Xiangshu(China) won the third prize(Tam-Hwa) in the contest. If contest winners pass the master's degree, they will receive benefit of full exemption from admission fee and tuition. And Sungkyunkwan University will hold a Korea visiting event for students who participated in the event. President Shin Dong Ryeol said, “COVID-19 could not break a passion of Korean-loving students. Sungkyunkwan University has recently held a writing contest online to meet the passion of these students. SKKU has increased the summer vacation from two months to three months for the smooth operation of the Challenge Semester. Last year, despite the COVID-19, more than 5,500 students participated to foster a spirit of challenge and gain extensive experience. This year, SKKU plans to provide students with fruitful and various programs so that they can learn what they want. Confucianism Humanity Education Center has successfully completed character development program Confucianism Humanity Education Center (Director: Prof. Lee Cheon Sung) recently held an essay contest for all students taking The Analects of Confucius class in humanity field. Due to COVID-19, it was held as an essay contest in 2021 spring semester, and 1,612 students, the largest number ever, participated. Students considered how to look at the problem of life based on ‘Benevolence (인, 仁)’ and sought solutions. After two rounds of screening, the grand prize was given to one student, the second prize was given to two students, and the third prize was given to seven students. Jang Jae Sung (Electronic and Electrical Engineering) won the grand prize with an essay titled ‘What we have to do to leave a good mark’. Kim Hee Jin (Social Welfare) and Bae Ye Rin (Medicine) won the second prize, and the third prize was given to seven students including Choi Ki Hwan (Advanced Materials Science and Engineering). This program is a representative character development program of Confucianism Humanity Education Center, and it is a large-scale event with more than 1,200 students participating each semester. - 2021 Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest has been successfully completed Our university (SKKU) held Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest (Head of operation: Prof. Sung Jae Ho of Law School) online on April 24 (Sat). To communicate with people around the world through Hangeul and to induce proper understanding and interest in Korean culture, SKKU has held Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest in many countries around the world, including China, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Southeast Asia since 2007. Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest is not only a competition that shows the writing skills of foreign students studying Korean, but also a competition widely known as a gateway to studying in Korea. In 2019, it was aired on KBS <3 Days of Documentary> as a special feature for Hangeul Day. However, it is impossible to host the contest in Korea due to COVID-19, so Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest has been held online since 2020 in line with the era of non-contact. By switching to online contest, the restriction on the number of students per school, which was originally limited to one or two, was removed, and the host area was newly established and expanded. 2021 regional contest were held in Korea (2nd), China (12th), Central Asia (12th), and Europe (5th), with 473 out of a total of 622 applicants participating. President Shin Dong Ryeol said in his greeting, “We have been able to see the pure heart and passion of many young people studying Korean and their keen interest in Korea through the Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest. We will continue to provide support and efforts for students studying Korean to move toward bigger dreams.” He also said, “Hangeul is the foundation and bridge of the Korean Wave, so I sincerely hope that you will not only enjoy the Korean Wave and be interested in Korea and Hangeul, but also grow into a global leader who contributes to your country and Korea's development together." The results of 2021 Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest will be announced on June 1 (Tue) and a total of 15 winners will be selected including Gold, Silver, Bronze Awards. Winners will be given the opportunity to participate in SKKU’s short-term programs, by choosing between International Summer/Winter Semester or the Korean language course of Sungkyun Language Institute. Gold, Silver, Bronze Award winners will be invited to participate in the annual Global Contest held in Korea for 3 nights and 4 days. The Global Contest will also provide programs for understanding Korea. However, due to COVID-19, Global Contest will be held online this year, and the winners of 2021 will be invited in 2022. Gold, Silver, Bronze Award winners for the Global Contest will be given the benefit of exempting all tuition fees for visiting students (1 semester) or master's (4 semesters). It consists of a total of 23 items, including school mascots (Myeongryun & Yuljeon) dolls, sweatshirt with school mark, school brochures and quarantine items such as KF94 mask, hand sanitizer.
