The class aims to introduce the operating principles and the structure of photonic devices such as laser diodes (LD), light emitting diodes (LED) and photodiodes (PD). The kinds of semiconductors that show high light emitting efficiency and high sensitivity to light are introduced and the basic physical processes for light emission and detection are explained. The heterostructures generally adopted for these photonic devices are introduced and the physical properties the heterostructures show are expalined.

For storage of information, magnetic materials like a MRAM, FRAM are used. Physical properties, measurements, classifications, units, processes, and applications of magnetic materials are introduced. Specifically, characteristics of diamagnetism and paramagnetism, ferromahnetism, antiferromagnetism, ferrimagnetism, and soft and hard magnetic materials, etc., will be studied. In addition, magnetic domains, exchange energy, magnetostatic energy, magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, Bloch wall energy, magnetostrictive energy, hysteresis curve., etc will be understood. Finally, fine particles, thin films, magnetization dynamics, and applications of magnetic materials will be discussed.
