As the demands of bio-health care continuously increase according to changes of population structure, it is expected that in the future medical science will depend heavily on engineering development, and the field of medical equipment will occupy a trillion won in the market. For this reason, BME is already emerging as a core business and spotlighted as a field with many opportunities in the future.
However in Korea, BME is still in the early stages and focusing on cultivating the operating manpower of medical equipment, rather than developing research.To accelerate the take-off of 'Global Leading University' by cultivating creative next generation elite and making world class research results, SKKU established the Department of Biomedical Engineering (Undergraduate/Graduate) in 2015.
Vision
The BME department is a new concept still in its early stages in Korea, but is well established in other countries, including the US. It has emerged as a field that is the most promising over a 2 year period and in the next 10 years, it is expected to develop as the most general and promising occupation in Korea.
SKKU BME is planning to classify career options into two pathways (employment or research) and suggests a specific road map for Post-doc, research professors of national institutes and college, and full-time professors after graduation.
The department also plans to strengthen Industrial Cooperation Systems for students who want to go to global HME companies such as; Siemens, GE, Samsung and so on. For this system, we are offering systemized assistance programs for graduate students to enhance their capabilities to compete in a global, competitive society.

- Cultivate world-class global biomedical engineering professionals by focusing on three main areas: neuroscience, biocompatible materials, and high-tech medical equipment
- Educate global leaders and become immersed in the international biotechnology market through high-impact research that introduces innovative educational programs and research methods, as well as utilizes fundamental analysis of biological phenomena such as the causes of disease
- Principally, establish a system whereby the university, research institutes, and businesses are able to advance the study of brain mechanisms, design creative biomolecules, and develop medical equipment which is the most promising industry at present
- Educate students to plan creative experiments by using creative research planning methods

For graduate applicants, we expect a person who is going to lead fundamental research fields of neuroscience, investigate principles of biocompatible materials, and design and develop high-tech medical equipment to solve clinical problems
- Leader – An individual who is well-acquainted with the basic knowledge and practical ability to research multi-disciplinary study field
