Engineer the Net-Zero Future: Department of Low-Carbon Energy Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University
We are the Department of Low-Carbon Energy Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University, leading global decarbonization and innovation.
In response to the grand challenges of the climate crisis and energy transition, our mission is to cultivate practice-oriented low-carbon engineers who bridge science, engineering, policy, and industry. By advancing energy-system efficiency, accelerating carbon-reduction technologies, and enabling the transition to sustainable fuels and materials, we aim to help industry and society achieve net-zero. Building on SKKU’s engineering tradition and a strong culture of convergence, our department adopts an outcomes-based, student-centered (OBE) education model. While mastering rigorous engineering fundamentals, students engage across the core frontiers of future energy—green hydrogen and ammonia; CCUS and carbon valorization; sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and e-fuels; energy storage and power systems; process systems, LCA, and digital twins—experiencing the full cycle from problem definition and design to experimentation, data analysis, and field application. Through a wide selection of electives and cross-disciplinary courses, students gain connectivity with adjacent fields such as automotive, aerospace, chemical and materials engineering, power systems, and AI, while international co-teaching and an English track strengthen global competencies.
Our research spans catalysis, electrochemistry, thermal-fluid sciences, materials, and systems engineering, with core thrusts in CCUS and carbon-circular fuels; biorefinery and waste-to-value upcycling; high-efficiency processes and thermal management; integrated operation of power–hydrogen–heat; and AI/data-driven optimization. Leveraging on-campus institutes, testbeds, and industry-academic joint R&D, we maintain a research ecosystem that progresses to pilot and demonstration scales, pursuing both practical impact and societal value through collaboration with leading companies, research institutes, government bodies, and international organizations.
We further activate industry-embedded education, internships, capstone and field projects, and entrepreneurship programs, so that students develop creative problem-solving skills for complex real-world challenges. By integrating non-technical dimensions—ESG, safety, regulation, standards, and LCA/MRV—across education and research, we prepare graduates to become global-standard leaders in industry, academia, national labs, and the public sector. Combining excellence in education and research, the Department of Low-Carbon Energy Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University will serve as a hub of sustainable innovation supporting the nation’s and industry’s energy transition. We invite you to begin this responsible journey—for future generations and for our planet—together with us.
