- “Shinbangrye”, SKKU’s unique welcoming ceremony
- The 2019 “Shinbangrye” has taken place in front of the Myeongryundang in March 23rd ~ 24th hosted by “Chungrang”*. *Chungrang(靑浪): A student Organization in SKKU which has succeeded the traditions of Chosun dynasty to maintain Korea’s unique university tradition. “Shinbangrye” is a traditional welcoming event and rite of passage for new Confucian scholars who have passed the state examination. Chungrang prepared this event in two different sessions to provide an experience of university life during the Chosun era. They have reenacted Almyo(謁廟), Sangeuprye(相揖禮), and Soshinbangrye (小新榜禮) in the first session and performed the myunshinrye(免新禮) in a role-playing game format in the second session. The first session started with the Almyo, which is a ritual of bowing towards Confucius and other Confucian sages. With the help of Sungkyunkwan, the Almyo was restored into the original form. Next was the Sangeuprye which is the confrontation of junior and senior students. Last part was the Soshinbangrye, which is a ritual of presenting tribute to the senior students. One of the student brought a chocolate, and presented it to the senior student by saying, “This is a snack made out of Ga-Ga-Oh(可嘉娛) fruit.” In the second session Myunshinrye was reenacted like a role-playing game. It is originally a hazing ritual notorious for its brutality but Chungrang has reinterpreted the ritual in a modern perspective. The main plot of the game was to complete a mission of researching Hunminjeongeum by time traveling to the era of Sejong (founder of the Korean language). In order to complete the mission, students need to pass through small mission games by the NPC (non-player character). For example, the character Sung Sammun (historical scholar of the Hall of Worthies) gave out a mission of writing after rotating several times and character Princess Jung-eui (who was known to be good at math) gave a mission related to numbers. They have constituted historical figures such as King Sejong, Choi Hang, Sung Sammun, Choi Malli, Jang Youngsil as NPCs. The director of the program said, “The 2019 Shinbangrye is a unique welcoming party for the freshman students. We will strive to continue on the traditions and also promote healthy and enjoyable welcoming party in the university.”
