There is countless information on Korean literature, history and philosophy that is written in classical Chinese (70~80%), so it can be easily said that in order to understand the Korean language, identity and culture, you must understand Korean classics. Even in this era of internationalization such an endeavor is an urgent and necessary task. Our department was established in 1988 to achieve this academic purpose.
However, we are not just limited to Korean Literature in Classical Chinese. We train students to understand and enhance their ability to read Classical Chinese in order to broaden their understanding of all works. This department, with its’ 20 years' accumulated history, provides a systematic, broad curriculum for helping our students to develop their reading ability. Through these courses, we wish to cultivate basic abilities through the instruction of oriental studies as well as Korean Literature in Classical Chinese.
This field is a science blueprint to studying various cultures, and using text centered in literature, history and philosophy. It is one aspect out of a core that forms present-day Korea's cultural tradition. Through knowledge obtained in this field, we can understand traditional Korean culture in depth. Studying this area is important because in the traditional era, Classical Chinese was used in almost all intellectual works and documents.
