Megan needs to collect general information about SKKU for her assignment.
Megan: |
Hello, I would like to know when the university was established. |
Mr. Park: |
It was established in 1398 as a Confucian Institution, and was Korea’s core center for higher learning under the Joseon dynasty. |
Megan: |
What is the meaning of the university’s name and symbol? |
Mr. Park: |
The meaning is “an institution for building a harmonious society of perfected human beings.” As you may know, the symbol of SKKU is Ginkgo tree which you can find around the campus. The trees were planted in 1519 and Confucius is said to have loved reading, pondering, and teaching under Ginkgo trees. In other words, it stands for those qualities. |
Megan: |
Okay. I have a few more questions to ask. How many students and professors do you have in total? |
Mr. Park: |
We currently have around 25,000 students and 1,300 professors in total. |
Megan: |
Well, I heard that the university motto is “Humanity, Righteousness, Propriety and Wisdom.” What does that mean exactly? |
Mr. Park: |
The four cardinal virtues in the model signify humanity’s four inherent actions of spirit, action, conscience, and intellect. The spirit knows how to love, righteousness understands the difference between right and wrong, propriety involves basing decisions on forbearance, and wisdom stands for perceiving all important factors. The idea is that humans are innately good, but the quality of goodness must be awakened and nurtured, so instruction must be carried out in accordance with the four principles. The four principles are the basis for higher goals in the quest for truth, and the attempt to establish social justice. |
Megan: |
What are the key indicators of the university? |
Mr. Park: |
The university is a global top 100 research institute, it ranked 140th in terms of SCI research performance, and it is a leading university in 10 core areas. |
Megan: |
I have another question. Does SKKU have overseas study program partners? |
Mr. Park: |
Yes, we have exchange programs with 200 universities in 40 countries. Now SKKU is expanding its oversea affiliations with universities in the world to survive the competitive environment in higher-education |
Megan: |
Has your university received grants? |
Mr. Park: |
Yes, the Korean Government awarded SKKU several Brain Korean Research Grants and considerable funding for the Academy of East Asian studies to reward the efforts of our outstanding faculty. |
Megan: |
Impressive!! I appreciate your kindness, and the excellent information. Take Care. |
