Megan would like to know information about Leave of Absence, Reinstatement and Dismissal.
Megan: |
Do Koreans and foreigners have an equal opportunity to receive a leave of absence? |
Mr. Park: |
No, foreigners can only apply due to health problems or unavoidable serious incidents, but Koreans can apply for other reasons. |
Megan: |
Where do foreigners apply? |
Mr. Park: |
They must leave a petition with their relevant administrative office which they will learn about during registration. |
Megan: |
What is required for the petition? |
Mr. Park: |
A medical certificate which proves a minimum of three weeks treatment, or other documents proving an unavoidable incident must be presented. |
Megan: |
I see. Then, how can a person apply for reinstatement after absence? |
Mr. Park: |
He or she must apply for reinstatement through the GLS system. |
Megan: |
By the way, I registered for the next semester yesterday, how do you know registration is complete? |
Mr. Park: |
Registration is complete the moment tuition and all other cumulative fees are paid, and you can check it through the GLS system. If students are not registered by the due date, they are considered dismissed by default. But, if they have applied for a leave of absence or registration, they will not be immediately dismissed. |
Megan: |
I didn’t know that. What happens if a student is dismissed? |
Mr. Park: |
A dismissed student may have his/her student status in Korea discontinued, and as a result he/she has to leave KOREA within a determined period. |
Megan: |
Do you have any idea how long the determined period is? |
Mr. Park: |
To my knowledge, dismissed students have to leave Korea within 15 days, but you had better contact the immigration office to make sure. You can dial 1345 (extension) or visit the website at www.hikorea.go.kr |
Megan: |
Okay, when I arrive home, I am going to check it out. |
