A research team led by Professor Jo Dong-gyu (first author: Han Jihoon, combined Master/Ph.D course) revealed the mechanism on how Presenilin-1 mutations, which are known to be the main cause of hereditary Alzheimer's dementia, affect mitochondria.
This study was conducted based on the fact that mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are detected in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease and that Presenilin-1 is present in various intracellular organelles including mitochondria. The team found that the mutation of Presenilin-1 abnormally increases the binding of ER and mitochondria by increasing the expression of ATL2, and that the expression level of ATL2 is increased in Alzheimer's patients and Alzheimer's mouse model brains.
This study was carried out with the support of the Ministry of Science and ICT's Mid-career research grant and the Leading Research Center (MRC), and was published in the September issue of Theranostics (IF 11.56), a world-renowned academic journal.
