- [Sungkyunkwan University Alumni Association News] - "In search of a college." by Kim Dong-min
-
[Sungkyunkwan University Alumni Association News] Interview in the February 2023 issue - Kim Dong-min, dean of the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy (Studying abroad 87) Q. Composition and Introduction of the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy A. There are East Asian thought and culture departments (Yugyo Kyungjeon, Korean thought, calligraphy, Oriental aesthetics, life etiquette, tea ceremony majors) and non-degree courses include Oriental culture advanced courses and Confucian leadership courses. In addition, we have a scholarship institution called Yang Hyun-jae to cultivate excellent talents in undergraduate and graduate schools. Research institutions include three research institutes under the Institute of Sungkyun Confucianism and Oriental Philosophy and Confucian Culture Research Institute under the Institute of East Asian Studies. Currently, the university has eight full-time faculty members, 400 students (220 undergraduate students, 180 graduate students), and 120 researchers at the institute. Q. History of the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy A. It is in line with the history of Sungkyunkwan University's opening in 1946 when it established the Gyeongsang and Cheoljeong departments based on studying abroad. The Department of Oriental Philosophy was first established in 1948, and it was promoted to a study abroad university in 1967, and its history as a college began by establishing a study abroad department and a philosophy department under it. In 1981, it was divided into three departments: study abroad, Korean philosophy, and Oriental philosophy. After that, it was reorganized into study abroad and oriental philosophy, and now it is integrated into study abroad and oriental studies. The graduate course was established in 1957 as a Ph.D. in Oriental Philosophy, Korean Philosophy, and Oriental Philosophy. It is now integrated into the Department of Oriental Philosophy and has three majors under it. Q. The Strengths and Characteristics of College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy A. The College of Study is in line with the history of this school, which boasts the 625th anniversary of its foundation. Sungkyunkwan University is an orthodox Korean national university that inherits the Confucian traditions of Goguryeo and Sungkyunkwan in Joseon, and it is a university that represents the legitimacy and spirit of Sungkyunkwan University. In the undergraduate course, systematic education on traditional studies is conducted. Graduate school trains students to grow into a follow-up generation by studying abroad, oriental philosophy, and Korean philosophy in detail. Students from these universities are recognized as the best talents in various fields such as domestic and foreign universities, research institutes, and companies through their outstanding personality and academic ability. Q. A particular area of research A. Since the university has its own education and research system, it is conducting various types of education and research programs by winning many research funding projects both internally and externally. In the field of education, a total of 21 years (1999-2020) were carried out from the 1st to 3rd stages of the BK21 project, and it was the only one selected in the country in the philosophy/religion field in the ongoing 4th phase (2020.9-2027.8). In the field of research, about 30 researchers from the Ministry of Education and the Korea Institute of Studies (5 years, 5 billion won) are promoting the spread and globalization of Korean philosophy through the development and distribution of online content related to Korean philosophy and culture. Under the Cultural Heritage Administration's "Important Archival Heritage International Project" (3 years, 1.65 million), more than 60 researchers contribute to popularizing traditional Korean culture and ideas by translating important national heritage into a database. In addition, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is carrying out various national projects such as "Korea Yugyung Jeongbonhwa DB and Utilization System Construction Project (2010-2022,3.37 billion won), "Humanities and Social Research Institute Support Project" (1.4 billion won), and "Korea Academic Translation Project" (60 million won). Q. The Development Goals of College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy A. In Analect, there is a saying, "If you study the old and know the new, you can become a teacher." The College of Study is to inherit and develop the Confucian tradition based on the spirit of Ongo. This goal is showing tangible results through projects such as ·
and along with the systematic education and research system of the university. Next, based on the spirit of intellectualism, we will focus our efforts on the social spread of studying abroad by promoting the modernization and globalization of studying abroad. This goal is being realized through projects such as · . Q. What do you want to say to 250,000 alumni? A. As of 2023, Sungkyunkwan University has launched a bold challenge for humanity and the future society, and its best goal is to foster global leaders who can lead the challenge. The talent award pursued by Sungkyunkwan University is a leader who can harmonize traditional and future values, like the slogan "unique origin, unique future." So, what is the tradition of Sungkyunkwan University, the "vocal" tradition that no other university has? There's a saying in Analects that says, "Painting is done after you have a white background." It means that you can only draw a great work on it if you have clean and white drawing paper. Now, our university is drawing more colorful pictures than anyone else through remarkable growth. However, in the fierce competition for universities, it is never easy for our university's paintings to be evaluated as excellent works. Or rather, it could be very easy. Our university has a white background that no other university has, or 'unique' 'sexuality', and that is the value of the tradition of studying abroad. Painting on the value of this tradition can be a masterpiece unique to Sungkyunkwan University that can be recognized and respected by anyone. The College of Study will do its best to make Sungkyunkwan University's 625-year study abroad tradition a clean and reliable foundation for Sungkyunkwan University, which dreams of a great future. We hope that 250,000 Sungkyunkwan University alumni will believe and support that the university is an important asset of our university that keeps the "vocal" tradition. -

- The 1st Korean Philosophy and Culture Digital Convergence Talent Contest Award Ceremony
- On February 7, the University of Foreign Studies held an award ceremony for the "1st Korean Philosophy and Culture Digital Convergence Talent Contest". The contest is designed to inspire undergraduates with interest in Korean philosophy and digital humanities and to enhance their capabilities in digital methodology. Despite the theme of Korean philosophy and the difficult demand of using digital methodology, the students managed it in their own ways. The Grand Prize-winning "Making My Own 3D Drawing" team (Park Jae-yi, Choi Kwon-hee, and Han Young-heon) produced learning contents that can implement their own drawings with simple commands using Python (computer language). This content induces users to naturally access the implications of Korean philosophy through drawing. (If you go to https://cafe.naver.com/skkudigitalcontents, you can meet the illustrations implemented by students.) The team (Yoon Young-chae, Lee Ga-eun, and Seo Yuri), which won the grand prize, developed VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) based on Donuimun Japanese colonial eraines, which were damaged during the Japanese colonial period. This content combines location-based services (LBS) with events and places that represent resistance to Japanese colonial era "unjustice" to interpret the restoration of Donuimun as a journey to find "righteousness." (You can see content created by students by adding KakaoTalk channels by accessing https://pf.kakao.com/_TiEfxj.) Choi Jung-in received the Special Achievement Award for "Our People from the Department of Oriental Studies." Based on the survey, the above content identifies the status of double majors and club activities of students and graduates of the Department of Oriental Studies, and then visualizes them to track significant trends. The organizers thanked all participants for interpreting various topics that were not easy in their own ways, and awarded prizes to the winners to encourage follow-up research.
