- Special Lecture by Prof. Michael Puett from Harvard University
- Prof. Michael Puett gave special lecture to Students in Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy. Prof. Michael Puett is professor of Chinese History and Anthropology, as well as the Chair of the Committee on the Study of Religion at Harvard University. He is well known for his book, "the Ambivalence of Creation: Debates Concerning Innovation and Artifice in Early China" and "To Become a God: Cosmology, Sacrifice, and Self-Divinization in Early China". In the lecture, he emphasized that our identity is not fixed but could be changeble with external stimulus. He said "You can adopt new habits and literally change the way you take in the world, react to it, and interact with other people."

- 8th Seoul Castle Walk (순성놀이)
- College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy held the “Seoul Castle Walk” as a student activity on the 3th of November, 2018. * Course: From Inwangsan Heel to Chang-Eu-Mun(창의문) “Seoul Castle Walk” is the event dividing Seoul Castle into 4 parts and walking around it for 2 times in an year. Participants can not only look at the various historical places but also enjoy the cultural experience. Moreover, they can communicate with and make friendship with other people in the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy. College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy will hold the 8th Seoul Castle Walk on this fall. We hope your attention to Seoul Castle Walk-- Sun-seung Nori 순성놀이.

- Sungkyunkwan University exchange with Nankai University in China
- On the 7th of June 2018, Sungkyunkwan University and Nankai University in China held a meeting. The main agenda of the meeting was the exchange between the two universities as part of the way to develop studying abroad. Dr. Xiao Long Huh, the director of the History Research Institute of Nankai University, and Professor Zhu Chen of the Chinese Academy of Culture in Korea, attended the ceremony.

- Preliminary Thesis Presentation from Eastern Philosophy in 2018-1st semester
- On May 29 (Tue.) at 1 pm, Students in Eastern Philosophy presented about their thesis. Professor Shin Jung-keun, professor Cho Min-hwan, Professor Baek Young-sun, and 11 presenters and a lot of other audiences attended the presentation. There was a lot of enthusiasm among the students who prepared the thesis. Professors gave lots of advices on papers, and the advice was helpful for students to develop their thesis. In addition, not only the presenters of preliminary thesis but also the students who participated in the lecture gave opportunity to comment and corrected the direction of the thesis. This presentation was held for about 3 hours and became a meaningful place to connect one another.

- 2018-1 College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy 'Rim Edward K. Scholarship' award ceremony
- On the 16th of May, 'Rim Edward K Scholarship' ceremony was held. Rim Edward K, Dean Shin Jung-Geun, Professor Kim Sung-Ki, Kim Do-Il, Baek Young Sun, Park So-jung, and Kim Dong-min attended the ceremony. In addition, Wu Jisu and Go Yoonjae, students in College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy took part in the ceremony and celebrated together. ( ▲ Left: Kim Ye-eun / Right: Jung Su-Kyung) Kim Ye-eun and Jung Su-kyung, students in the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy were awarded a scholarship certificate in 2018 spring semester. They got a scholarship as half amount of tuition fee in this semester. Lim Gwan Hun scholarship is a scholarship fund donated by Rim Edward K from 2007. Two students are awarded every semester. - SKKU Placed 87th by CWTS Leiden Ranking 2018
- The CWTS (Dutch: Centrum voor Wetenschap en Technologische Studies, CWTS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands assessed the ‘2018 Leiden Rankings’ based on the scientific performances of 938 major universities worldwide. SKKU placed 87th, demonstrated an improvement of 9 places higher on the list compared to the previous year. The Leiden Ranking is based on Web of Science data. All universities worldwide with more than 1000 fractionally counted Web of Science indexed core publications in the period 2013–2016 are included in the ranking. This year, SKKU was placed on 87th with 7,920 research publications. In particular, the fields in Medicine and Natural Science/Engineering were recognized its excellent research performances and placed on 86th and 76th, respectively. Harvard University with 33,045 publications, University of Toronto with 22,151 publications, and Zhejiang University with 20,876 publications are three top leading universities worldwide.

- 7th Seoul Castle Walk (Sun-Seong Nori)
- College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy held the “Seoul Castle Walk” as a student activity on the 12th of May, 2018. Despite of bad weather, 67 participants fully enjoyed their time while walking around Seoul castle. Course: SKKU -> Namsan Octagonal Pavillion-> Jangchung Gymnasium -> Gwanghee Gate -> Dongdaemun Gate After the walking tour, all of the participants enjoyed Korean hot pot and traditinal drink, Makgeoli. “Seoul Castle Walk” is the event dividing Seoul Castle into 4 parts and walking around it for 2 times in an year. Participants can not only look at the various historical places but also enjoy the cultural experience. - Traditional and Unique Freshman Orientation, ‘Shin Bang Rye’ was held
- To welcome the new semester of 2018, 250 freshmen, including international students, participated in SKKU’s traditional and unique orientation ‘Shin Bang Rye’, held at the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus from March 10th ~ 11th. ‘Shin Bang Rye’ is a traditional freshmen orientation stemming from the Joseon Dynasty, where newcomers can learn about the education curriculum, campus life, and expected behavior. The event that commenced during the ‘Shin Bang Rye’ ritual process are as follows: Al-Sung (commemorative rites in front of Dae-Sung-Jun), Sang-Eup-Rye (formal greetings between seniors and freshman students), Shin-Bang-Rye (welcoming party by sharing food), and Myun-Shin-Rye (initiation ceremony where senior students provides various tasks to freshmen). For 2018 Shin Bang Rye, 27 international students from various countries, including China, France, Morocco, Germany, Czech Republic, Vietnam, etc. participated to experience the culture and history of the Joseon Dynasty. “We tried to make a unique orientation by combining traditional and modern environments. We will continuously try our best to organize special and unique events with novel ideas,” said student Min Gyung OH, president of the student association ‘Chung Ryang’.

- Orientation for Yanghyeonjae (養賢齋)
- On the 6th of March, Yanghyeonjae held an Orientation for celebarating spring semester of 2018 at Toegye Hall of Humanities. While A lot of students in Yanghyeonjae attended, Shin Jung Geun, Dean of the Colleage of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy introduced Kim Jung Seung, a new Jae-Gam(Director) of Yangheonjae. Professor, Shin presented the scholarship to the students who were selected as scholars for this semester and urged to be informed about the new Yanghyeonjae regulations. All members in Yanghyeonjae would make every effort for all instructors and Jae-Saeng(students) to enjoy SKKU life.
