In the Department of Confucian and Oriental Studies, we offer a career academically specialized not only to this major, that proceeds into the graduate school, but also to practical careers that are accessible to various works of society by ties created with careers based on this field of study. In particular, we would like to provide a basis for access to various careers in our society through in depth understanding of East Asian culture and society.
On the basis of understanding East Asian traditions, which are the foundation for East Asian culture and society, we are strengthening our educational methods to cultivate students' aptitude for culturology: cultural philosophy, cultural criticism, cultural business etc., through in depth study of East Asian traditions, art and modern culture in general; while enhancing your ability to modernize traditional culture. Also we help you become an internationally talented individual through studying East Asian classical literature, learning classical Chinese, as well as providing education in Chinese and English. You can also take the teacher’s track enaling you to teach a subject in Morality & Ethics. Already many graduates have taken up teaching posts in schools around the country and our department does receive a lot of recommendations for alumni.
Aside from this, there are already many graduates who have entered into various career fields such as journalism, cultural arts, private companies, public companies, government offices, and finance, where they are receiving good evaluations from their companies and adjusting to their careers very well. Even without taking the academic advancement track, utilizing humanitarian aptitude and the muti-discipline system of our school will enable you to show your talent in various professional areas.

1. Educational Objectives
The main objective of our department is to ensure that students develop into mature human beings both intellectually and morally, by getting a broad and yet thorough education in Eastern Classics. Moreover, our department will ensure that students receive proper training in order to become highly sophisticated people of culture, by offering high-quality courses in Eastern Culture and Eastern Art. We expect that our graduates will become leaders in academic and non-academic areas.

The Department of Confucian and Oriental Studies aims to foster the knowledge of students through the academic study of Confucian Ideology, the founding philosophy of Sungkyunkwan University. Furthermore, the department, as a central study area of the university, will lead the future society through the fundamentals of developing the practices and ideologies of Confucianism, and overcoming the limits of modern culture.
