SKKU National Program of Excellence in Software, held the 1st Autonomous Driving Hackathon Competition
SKKU National Program of Excellence in Software announced that it held the 2024 1st SKKU Autonomous Driving *Hackathon Competition from April 5 (Friday) to April 6 (Saturday) over a non-stop 20-hour period at the Autonomous Driving Track of the Samsung Library, Software Complex on the Natural Science Campus.
* Hackathon: A combination of "Hacking" and "Marathon." An event where participants engage in hacking or developing programs within a set time and location, similar to a marathon.
The Autonomous Driving Hackathon Competition, co-hosted by the College of Computing and Informatics (Dean Lee Eun-seok) and the SKKU National Program of Excellence in Software, featured teams of participants who applied in advance from the entire student body. The competition challenged participants to showcase their software development skills through presentations of IVI SW (Infotainment Software) ideas and autonomous driving simulations.
IVI SW (Infotainment Software) provides not only necessary information for driving but also entertainment elements for users.
Examples include:
Chatbots that interact with drivers and provide traffic information
Traffic Services that detect road obstacles and warn drivers
Real-time Vehicle Traffic Monitoring
Vehicle Internal Condition Detection and Notification Services
The team 5pen CV Team (Choi Joon-yeol, Yeom Ho-jin, Kim Yul from the Department of Software) won the grand prize by presenting a "Road Hazard Situation Recognition and Automatic Reporting System." They highlighted social issues such as reckless driving, including the incident in March where a high school student from Cheonan was killed by a drunk driver hit and run. The team proposed using ADAS Systems and LiDAR sensors to address the lack of reckless driving verification systems and provide preemptive responses to fatal road accidents through software enhancements.
S-Car's student leaders, Kang Min-seok (President) and Kim Jong-hyo (Vice President), stated, “In the 1st Autonomous Driving Hackathon, each participating team not only refined their ideas through brainstorming but also conducted development demonstrations through simulations. We aim to further develop and improve autonomous driving software, mount it on autonomous model cars that are one-tenth the size of actual vehicles, and perform various missions. This will prepare us to achieve excellent results in future internal and external autonomous driving competitions.”
Dean Lee Eun-seok of the College of Computing and Informatics (also Head of the SKKU National Program of Excellence in Software) commented, “The 1st SKKU Autonomous Driving Hackathon Competition was held to discover students interested in autonomous driving technology and to promote the expansion and advancement of software technology. It provided an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their ability to integrate technologies from various fields, including autonomous driving and automobiles, through 20 hours of development, and to develop problem-solving skills for real-world issues.” He added, “We hope to continue producing outstanding participants each year, fostering not only software development but also global talents who contribute to society.”
