◆ The first generative AI platform among Korean universities built on Microsoft Azure
KingoGPT is built upon Sungkyunkwan University’s dedicated Microsoft Azure cloud environment and the Azure OpenAI platform, featuring a hybrid structure that seamlessly integrates multiple models, including GPT-5.
High-performance models such as GPT-5 are utilized for complex or in-depth research queries, while lightweight models handle simple or everyday questions, optimizing the balance between accuracy and processing speed.
Once the service is fully launched, it will enable real-time AI assistance across education, research, and administrative domains — including preparing class materials, writing reports or administrative documents, and exploring ideas.
It is also expected to significantly enhance productivity in learning, research, and administrative tasks by supporting diverse applications such as translation and data analysis.
◆ Provides integrated academic paper search and various campus information services
KingoGPT goes beyond simple question-and-answer functionality, incorporating a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system that allows the AI to understand and respond based on key internal university documents.
This enables users to easily access the contents of important campus documents without separate searches.
For instance, the AI can deliver accurate and consistent information based on internal materials such as the Academic Policy Guide, Faculty Handbook, Retired Faculty Handbook, and University Regulations.
A newly added “Integrated Paper Search” function allows researchers to quickly find academic papers and directly access the original texts through source links.
Through these features, Sungkyunkwan University aims to evolve KingoGPT beyond a simple document search tool into an “AI-based Academic and Administrative Information Hub” that structures and summarizes the university’s knowledge system.

◆ Accelerating Digital Transformation, Realizing a Future-Oriented Campus
Our university regards the introduction of KingoGPT not merely as the establishment of an AI service, but as a core project to realize its digital transformation strategy. Currently, the system is undergoing stabilization and performance tuning in preparation for its official launch in early November. The university is building a safe and efficient on-campus information service framework that enables rapid access to academic, personnel, research, and administrative information through AI. Through this initiative, the university aims to accelerate the realization of a “future-oriented smart campus” where AI naturally permeates all aspects of education, research, and administration.
◆ Setting a New Milestone in University AI Utilization
President Ji-Beom Yoo stated, “KingoGPT is the first example of a system that goes beyond simple AI question-answering by providing accurate and consistent information based on official university documents. It establishes a foundation for AI-driven administrative innovation that enables all members of the university to better understand and utilize academic, research, and administrative information.”
Chief Information Officer Hyung-Ki Choi added, “KingoGPT operates within Sungkyunkwan University’s dedicated Microsoft Azure cloud environment and ensures high security and stability by adopting a structure that does not directly transmit internal data outside the university. We will continue to enhance operational efficiency and drive innovation in university administration through AI.”
◆ Building Sungkyunkwan University’s Own Large Language Model (LLM)
Following the launch of the KingoGPT service, the university plans to develop its own large language model (LLM) tailored to Sungkyunkwan University by utilizing internal university data. The initiative envisions:
△ Development of SKKU-specialized AI models,
△ Customized AI services across academic, research, and administrative domains, and
△ Implementation of AI functions specialized for educational and research purposes.
Based on these developments, the university aims to take a step forward as a “Next-Generation AI Leading University,” spearheading AI innovation in all areas of education, research, and administration through a phased and long-term strategy.
*Kingo: “Kingo” is the traditional emblematic name of Sungkyunkwan University. It is widely believed to derive from the historical fact that kings of the Joseon Dynasty frequently visited Sungkyunkwan, the royal educational institution. Another theory suggests it was adapted from the English name of the university’s symbolic tree, the ginkgo.
