Reaffirming Research Competitiveness in the
Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject!
- Ranked within the world’s top 100 in four subject areas, with the field of Medicine achieving an outstanding 40th place globally
SKKU has once again demonstrated its standing as a research-oriented institution by placing multiple subject areas within the global top 100 in the World University Rankings by Subject 2026, announced by Times Higher Education (THE), a global university ranking organization based in the United Kingdom.
In particular, achieving 40th place worldwide in the Medical & Health field is an exceptionally notable accomplishment on the international stage. Amid intense global competition in the biomedical and life sciences disciplines, this result demonstrates that SKKU’s research competitiveness has reached the highest tier. This achievement is interpreted as the outcome of specialized research strategies centered on oncology and cancer studies, as well as internationally recognized excellence in convergent research spanning both clinical and basic sciences.

Beyond medicine, our University also ranked within the world’s top 100 in key academic fields such as Engineering, Computer Science, and Business and Economics, reaffirming its multifaceted and well-balanced research capabilities that are not confined to a single discipline. This serves as clear evidence that the research areas strategically fostered by SKKU—including energy, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and biotechnology—are translating into tangible outcomes.
The THE subject rankings are calculated based on the same core indicators used in the overall World University Rankings—research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry engagement—while more precisely reflecting the research culture and publication characteristics unique to each academic field. In particular, they are regarded as one of the most rigorous indicators of subject-specific research strength, as they place strong emphasis on the qualitative impact of publications, international research collaboration, and the practical influence of research outcomes.

Through this evaluation, it has once again been confirmed that efforts to build world-class research infrastructure, secure outstanding faculty members, strengthen a graduate school–centered research system, and expand international research collaboration are yielding substantive results. Moving forward, SKKU will continue to pursue strategic focus and selection tailored to the characteristics of each academic field—including medicine, engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences—and strive toward further advancement as a leading global research university contributing to the development of scholarship worldwide.
