This course is for practicing the way of analysing historical records of Oriental history with the quantitative approach in order to utilizing the records. Three different parts compose the course; first, previous studies, critically, will be examined with a focus on a theoretical approach on a necessity of the quantitative historical analysis; second, we will practice the way of data extracting and compiling statistics from the historical records; and third, students must write a final paper based on their own analysis at the end of the semester. This course particularly helpful to understand the importance of quantitative research method on historical records as a way of multi-dimensional analysis. And it will pave the way of developing a basic competence for disciplinary convergence as well.
HIS4047 Understanding the History of Goryeo through Artifacts 3 6 Major Bachelor/Master History - No
1. The Aim of the Class A variety of artifacts made in the Goryeo Period, which include celadon vessels, monumental tablets, the Tripitaka Koreana, Buddhist paintings, and lacquerware, are used in various fields as well as represent the Korean traditional culture. This class aims to understand the history of the Goryeo Dynasty by examining the artifacts that were produced and used in this period. 2. Coursework Example: Understanding the Goryeo Celadon 1) Observation By observing the intact celadon vessels, and the scale, thickness, weight, toughness, and material of fragments, each student present his/her opinion in the havruta approach. The students first announce the production site and manufacturing process of the celadon vessels that they select, and secondly set force their views. 2) Use The students first present the use of celadon vessels based on the user's purpose, and secondly explain this reason. 3) Period The students announce their own opinions to the chronological stage of the Goryeo celadon. This presentation should include the beginning of the celadon production, the socio-economical aspect of its development, the influence of the Chinese Song Dynasty, and Kitan, and the political influence of the production and typology of the celadon vessels. etc..
