■Abstract
: Biological neural networks have long inspired artificial neural networks, yet the relationship is bidirectional — classical artificial neural network models have equally inspired biologists seeking to understand how the brain works. In this talk, I will present an example of how neural network theories and physiological observations inform each other to deepen our understanding of brain circuits.
One of the most fundamental mysteries in neuroscience is how the brain generates and maintains abstract internal representations. Models of such representations, including our sense of direction, have historically been difficult to test directly in mammals. Recently, however, a population of neurons called compass neurons, which encode the fly's orientation relative to its environment, was discovered in Drosophila. Strikingly, the topographic arrangement of these neurons allows us to monitor the fly's perceived direction in real time using physiological methods. Through a combination of computational circuit modeling, simulation, physiology, optogenetic manipulations, and electron microscopy-based connectomic analysis, we have revealed the key underlying principles governing this system. Together, these studies make a compelling case for how interdisciplinary approaches can provide deep insight into the inner workings of the brain.
