“Science, Crime and Detection in Popular Narratives and Media”
Popular Narratives and Media Research Initiative Inaugural Conference
March 31 – April 1, 2023, Old Botany Bldg., Penn State University
We are happy to announce that the Institute for Korean Studies (IKS) at Penn State University and Center for Cross Cultural Studies (CCCS) at Sungkyunkwan University are jointly hosting an inaugural conference on Korean popular narratives and media. The IKS-CCCS research initiative was established in 2021 with an aim to encourage transnational and transhistorical research of Korean popular literature and to bring together scholars whose works intersects with media, gender, colonial modernity, and readership. As a way to expand the scope of research by encompassing various genres of popular narratives and media, the conference wishes to contribute to the vibrant study of Korean popular culture by creating a space of intellectual exchange in areas that await active academic engagement such as speculative fiction, graphic novels, detective fiction, crime and mystery fiction, romance fiction, online games, webtoons, and more.
The theme of the conference is “Science, Crime and Detection: Korean Popular Narratives and Media,” that gathers scholars who examine popular literary and visual works through the lenses of science, crime, and detection.
This conference is sponsored by Academy of Korean Studies and Asian Studies Dept. at Penn State University.
