자살은 개인의 정신건강 문제로만 설명할 수 있을까요?
이번 세미나에서는 자살을 둘러싼 다양한 사회적 맥락(경제적 어려움, 관계의 단절, 사회적 고립, 공적 수치)을 살펴보고, 자살이 때로는 하나의 ‘사회적 행위’로 나타날 수 있다는 점에 주목합니다. 또한 자살 이후 사회가 보이는 반응이 어떻게 달라지는지도 함께 논의합니다.
West Virginia University 사회학과 교수 Jason Manning을 모시고, 도널드 블랙(Donald Black)의 순수 사회학 이론을 바탕으로 자살을 ‘사회적 기하학’의 관점에서 이해해보는 시간을 갖고자 합니다.

●초록: Public discussion of suicide focuses on mental health, but this is only part of the story. Suicide has social causes, such as financial hardship, broken relationships, social isolation, and public disgrace. It can be an extreme means of social action, such as a tactic of protest or punishment. Its consequences are social as well, ranging from shame and condemnation to sympathy, acceptance, or praise. Drawing on Donald Black’s paradigm of pure sociology, we can predict and explain these aspects of suicide in terms of the social geometry in which they occur.
