소개

번역학과(영한번역)는 이문화간의 커뮤니케이션 매개체인 우리말과 영어의 차이에 대한 깊은 이해와 국제화시대에 사회가 요구하는 전문 번역 기술을 가진 공인 번역사의 양성을 통해 한국의 세계화에 기여하며 또한 국제무대에 활약하는 공인 번역사 배출 목적으로 지난 2000년에 설립하였습니다.

교육과정은 번역이론 분야에서 축적된 핵심적 개념틀을 소개하고 실제 번역과정에서 제기되는 각종문제를 이해·분석·해결하는데 필요한 다양한 시각과 도구를 제공합니다. 본 학과는 국제정보 교류에 일익을 담당할 번역사를 교육시키는 교육기관으로서 국제문화에 대한 지식과 감각함양 및 국제정보를 선택하는 능력배양을 교육목표로 하고 있습니다.

교수진은 영어영문학과 소속 번역전공 교수와 한영 통번역 전공 전임교원 등으로 구성되어 있습니다. 번역학과(영한번역)는 우리나라의 경제발전에 따라 해외교류가 급속히 확대될 것에 대비하여 국제수준의 번역사를 양성할 목적으로 2000년에 설립하였습니다.

 

번역입문 (Introduction to Translation)

This course aims to teach students basic translation theories and skills required for professional translation, based on translation theories. Students will be encouraged to acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge of translation and learn ethics demanded for professional translators. This introductory course consists of basic translation studies and translation practices.

 

한국어와영어 (Advanced Korean and English for Translators)

Good command of two languages is crucial for translators. The purpose of this course is to give students greater confidence and translation skill by offering in-depth study on Korean and English and on their relations. For this, students will have a lot of opportunities of analyzing and comparing source texts and their translated texts.

 

번역학개론 (Translation Theories)

Studies of translation theories give students deeper insights into professional, practical, and academic issues connected with actual translation. This course will provide students with the latest translation theories which are helpful for students to understand translation as an academic discipline.

 

언어와문화 (Language and Culture)

In this course, students are supposed to read and translate diverse texts on culture and arts as well as some works on cultural anthropology, while making a comparative study of language and culture - two of the most important elements in translation. This course will also focus on the relations between language and culture because text should be considered in the context of culture.

 

문학번역실습1 (Literary Translation in Practice Ⅰ)

Students will practice translation of some literary works. They are required to read and translate original texts to learn how to use different strategies for translation of different literary genres, such as poetry, novels, plays, and critical essays.

 

한영번역실습1 (Practice of Korean-English Translation Ⅰ)

This course offers basic Korean-English translation of texts selected from various genres and fields, focusing on practical and non-literary texts. It also aims at enhancing students’ expression and writing skills of English language, while encouraging students to develop their styles in translation.

 

번역사연구 (History of Translation)

In this course, students will study the origin of translation and its historical development since the Roman Empire had forced translators to transmit all Greek culture into Rome. For this, students will read some texts that have caused serious controversies in the history of translation, while actually revising translated texts.

 

서양문학배경 (Background to the Western Literature)

This course will help students avoid making mistakes or errors in the translation of English literary works, which might result from the lack of background knowledge of Western culture. This course will, therefore, aim to make students familiar with Western, including Greco-Roman and Hebrew, cultures, by handling some mythology- or culture-related texts, while allowing students to have opportunities of finding translation errors in some translated books.

 

영미문화이해 (Understanding British and American Culture)

The purpose of this course is to enhance students’ understanding of British and American cultures, while helping students avoid making culture-related errors in translating process. It will, for this purpose, focus on political, economic, social, literary, scientific, and geographical characteristics of British and American cultures, as well as on their differences, while applying the learned lessons to actual translation.

 

기술번역1 (Technical Translation Ⅰ)

In this course, students will handle practical issues in the translation of technical texts in the fields of science, technology, business, industry, government, medicine, and so forth. Based on “team teaching,” this course will focus on making students familiar with difficult professional terminologies as well as on applying them in their actual translation.

 

장르별번역연구 (Translation Practices and Strategies for Literary Genres)

In this course, students will practice translation of various literary genres including short stories, essays, newspaper and magazine articles, and advertisement copies. Another main purpose of this course is to teach students how to map out effective strategies for dealing with various types of texts based on their own disciplines.

 

영문번역현황연구 (Translation in Korea)

This course aims to lead students to be aware of current issues in the field of translation by critically examining the major trends of translation and related problems. We will not only compare published translations of literary works, while examining relevant translation theories, we will also teach students how to survive in the highly competitive translation market.

 

현대번역이론연구 (Studies in Contemporary Translation Theories)

This course aims to reestablish the role of translation that changes in the development of languages, cultures, and societies and to search for cultural and ideological elements that shape translation studies.

 

번역의이론과실제 (Theory and Practice of Translation)

In this course, students will be encouraged to have some professional translation practices based on translation theories, while giving opportunities to deal with some problems in translation as well as to apply the latest theoretical issues to translation works. For this, this course will provide students with a conceptual framework for translation practice and a basic tool for translation.

 

번역과언어학 (Translation and Linguistics)

Translation is closely related to several fields of general linguistics, such as pragmatics, social linguistics, and research of text types. This course will introduce a range of linguistic areas and demonstrate how they can be utilized effectively in the analysis of texts for translation.

 

번역평가 (Translation Assessment)

The final task of translation studies is "how to assess" translated texts. This course attempts to make both a theoretical approach to assessing translation and an actual in-class analysis in order to help students learn how to review, edit, and revise translations.

 

문학번역실습2 (Literary Translation in Practice Ⅱ)

Students are, in this course, supposed to practice translation of some complicated literary works. They will read original texts to learn how to apply different strategies for translation of different literary genres, such as poetry, novels, plays, and critical essays.

 

영미시번역 (Translation of English Poetry)

This course aims to make students familiar with the important elements of English poetry such as poetic dictions, rhyme, meter, and its structure which are essential to understanding and translating the English poetry.

 

영미소설번역 (Translation of English Novel)

The purpose of this course is to promote the ability of students to translate English novels. For this purpose, we will read some English novels and discuss several factors important in understanding English novels, such as characterization, motifs of the novel, styles of the authors and historical backgrounds, etc., which are instrumental in translating novels.

 

영미희곡번역 (Translation of English Drama)

In this course, we will translate and analyze some important English dramas, while giving students an access to the nature and features of English dramas, which are helpful in translating English dramas into Korean.

 

담화분석과화용론 (Translation, Discourse Analysis, and Pragmatics)

In this course, students will learn pragmatics, a study of how words and phrases are used with special meanings in particular situations, and talk about discourse analysis which began to be applied to translation analysis.

 

번역학세미나 (Seminar in Translation)

This course aims to promote students’ understanding of translation by handling some translation theories as well as some linguistic theories. Along with this, this course will provide some texts to which the above theories can be applied.

 

일반저술번역 (Translation of Non-academic Works)

This course will allow students to learn advanced translation skill by providing them with opportunities to translate diverse works, especially non-fiction works as well as none-academic works. By this, students will be able to understand the intention of authors and to map out effective strategies needed for various texts.

 

한영번역실습2 (Practice of Korean-English Translation Ⅱ)

This in-depth Korean-English translation course offers students chance to translate Korean texts, including literary and academic ones, into English in a natural way, while helping students sharpen their skills in detecting and getting rid of errors in translation of Korean texts into English. Ultimately, this course aims to let Korean culture be known to English-speaking people by producing competent translators who can translate Korean texts into correct and natural English.

 

기술번역2 (Technical Translation Ⅱ)

This class will offers intensive practice and analysis of translated texts on medicine, business, science, politics, and law, thus allowing students to confidently cope with actual situations in the technical translation market.

 

학술저술번역 (Translation of Academic Text)

The purpose of this course is to examine terminologies and expressions used in specific academic fields. For this, students are supposed to select Korean or English academic texts and then translate them either into English or Korean in consultation with a lecturer or peer-group students.

 

시사영어번역 (Translation of Journalism English)

This course promotes students’ understanding of the characteristics and styles of journalism English by focusing on practices of Korean-English and English-Korean translations. To achieve this goal, it focuses on analyzing and translating newspaper and magazine articles as well as editorials and columns. Students will also write articles in English in this course.

 

미디어/영상번역 (Translation of Multimedia & Film Text)

In this course, students will read and translate various audiovisual media texts, both in English and Korean. Texts and tasks will concentrate initially on various types of practice materials that will cover screenplays or subtitles of movies, television dramas, videos, documentaries, and animations, among others.
