This course deals with the practice of social work in a case management context. This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of ways in which case management is employed to assist vulnerable populations of clients. A particular focus will be placed on how to develop effective service plans with clients and how to link clients to the necessary community resources available. The activity of outreach, intake, assessment, service plan development, documentation and record-keeping, interventions, continuity of care and follow-up, service coordination and monitoring, reassessment, crisis intervention, and eventual termination will be discussed. Ethical and legal issues that impact case management will be discussed as well.

This course is the first supervised fieldwork which is designed to provide an arena for students to use and integrate the knowledge, skills and values learned throughout the rest of the Department's curriculum. It focuses on creating unique contributions to student learning : the individualization of the student's learning needs; an opportunity for the student to put knowledge to use in the service of others; and an opportunity for the student to experience her/himself in a professional role. School seminar is designed to enhance students’ learning in the field practicum. It provides an opportunity to learn advanced level of site-specific knowledge and skills as well as to explore various issues that social workers confront in implementing social work policy and providing services to clients.
