It focuses on creating unique contributions to student learning : the individualization of the student's learning needs and adaptation of teaching to these needs ; an opportunity for the student to put knowledge to use in the service of others; and an opportunity for the student to experience her/himself in a professional role.

This class assumes that human rights as a guiding principle of social welfare is emphasized. Enhancing human rights are closely related to social welfare. This class covers history, theory, and applications of human rights. In addition, this class introduces human right-based social welfare which apply human rights into social welfare practice and policy. This class also introduces human rights in the international perspectives. This class will discuss how to cope with controversial issues of human rights and how to enhance human rights of disadvantaged populations as well as citizens.

The role of local governments in the field of social welfare, which directly affects the lives of residents, continues to increase. The purpose of this lecture is to deepen the understanding of students in social welfare policy led by local government, based on multiple theories of local autonomy, local government, and local finance. To achieve this purpose, this lecture deals with three main subjects. First, in relation to local autonomy, the theories of local autonomy, the internal organizations of local government(local councils and local government chiefs, educational autonomy organizations, etc.), the relationship between local governments and central government, the relationship between local governments and residents will be covered. Second, the theme is local finance, which is indispensable for social welfare policy. Third, this lecture deals with the policy process at the local government level.

As a topic of increasing significance in social welfare, the art and science of happiness has been explored intensively in diverse disciplines such as religion, philosophy, literature, history, and psychology. This course will expose students to various perspectives on happiness, and discuss what factors into a happy and meaningful life in the contemporary Korean society. This course will also highlight social welfare policy and practice implications of happiness, as well as ways to bring about meaningful changes in students’ everyday life to nurture their own happiness.

This course focuses on housing related challenges, as well as public and private sector responses to the challenges of the last few decades. Students will be introduced to key ideas such as right to a fair housing, and various housing policies aimed at reducing social inequity and ensure social security. Special attention will be devoted to issues of urban development and homelessness.

This course focuses on issues of human diversity and social justice in relation to biases, prejudices, and oppression due to differences in race/ethnicity, culture, religion, or nationality. The course aims to enhance cultural sensitivity and cultural competence by helping students critically reflect on their own values, beliefs, and behaviors such as styles of interaction and communication with people from cultures different than their own. Social welfare policy and practice to promote diversity also will be discussed.

This course provides a survey of the non-profit sector with regard to its missions, development/fundraising, performance measurement, and governance, as well as some emerging philanthropic and social venture/enterprise models. Students will be exposed to issues confronting churches, foundations, social ventures and international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and strategies for creative problem solving.

This course focuses on surveying the theory and research on continuity and change in adult development and aging from the third decade to the end of life. We will review theory and empirical research on biological, cognitive, psychological, and social aspects of aging for young, middle-aged, and older adults. This course will provide a foundation for exploration of the meaning of adulthood and aging in one’s personal and family life as well as a basic knowledge foundation for professional careers dealing with aging-related issues.

This course focuses on various theoretical frameworks in order to overview definitions and causes of poverty, its relationship with inequality, and its socioeconomic characteristics. This covers actural research regarding conditions and environments of families under poverty. This course further discusses comparative studies among developed countries toward problems of poverty.

The meaning and role of technology in the context of social welfare policy and practice is highlighted.
SWF3050 Controversial Issues in Aging 3 6 Major Bachelor Korean Yes
This course introduces key issues aging societies face that are of interest to all citizens. Specific topics include pensions, social services, family caregiving, and retirement. Social welfare policy and practice implications will be discussed in relation to aging. The primary goal of the course is to encourage students to critically evaluate issues related to aging, social welfare policy, and practice.
