- [Department of Statistics] 2024 Spring Graduate School Fair
- The Department of Statistics held the Graduate School Fair for the 1st semester of the 2024 academic year on April 1st, in room 32211 of Dasan Hall of Economics Building. The event was held for students aspiring to enter the graduate program in the Department of Statistics. It was led by Professor Kim Jae-jik, Head of the Department of Statistics, who provided explanations on admissions, academic regulations, career paths after graduation, and other related topics. Following this, there was a mentoring session with Kwun Nam-taek, a master's degree graduate, and Park Seo-young, a doctoral degree graduate from the Department of Statistics, providing students with valuable information and assistance. This event had the highest attendance of the Department of Statistics Graduate School Symposium. A total of 35 undergraduate students participated to design their career paths and gain insights through mentoring sessions with graduates. They also engaged in active exchange through asking insightful questions.

- Orientation for Freshmen of Global Economics Department in the Year 2024
- The Department of Global Economics at the College of Economics held an Orientation for freshmen from February 27th to 29th, at the Hwaseong Welli Hilli Park Resort. This event was organized for incoming freshmen and current students and was mainly planned by the 16th Student Council of the Department of Global Economics at Sungkyunkwan University, "pa:GE". The event, mainly organized by President Jung Yoon-sung and Vice President Kim Han-sol of the Department of Global Economics Student Council, was graced by the presence of Department Chairperson Choi Jae-sung. The gathering featured various programs such as group presentations by freshmen, recreational activities, fostering camaraderie, sharing information, and facilitating exchange among participants.

- [Research] Honored with the Excellence award at the 37th Economics Paper Contest hosted by Maeil Business Newspaper
- On April 13, 2023, In-wook Jeong(Advisor: Jaesung Choi), an alumnus of the Department of Quantitative Applied Economics at Sungkyunkwan University, was honored with the Excellence Award at the 37th Maeil Business Newspaper Economics Paper Contest held at Maegyeong Media Center in Jung-gu, Seoul. He conducted a study under the topic “Evaluation of the Employment Type Disclosure Policy on the Employment of Non-regular Workers.” For this research, He analyzed the effectiveness of the employment type disclosure system introduced in 2014 to reduce employment of non-regular workers. According to his paper, he analyzed the business report of korean listed companies provided by the FN DataGuide, and the disclosure system data of employment type in Korea provided by the Ministry of Employment and Labor's Worknet website. As a result, it was concluded that the effect of the disclosure system for employment type on non-regular employment for the entire sample was not significant.

- 2024 Statistics Freshman Orientation Held
- The Department of Statistics held the "2024 Statistics Major Freshman Orientation" at #31308 Toegue Hall of Humanities, Sungkyunkwan University at 15:00 on Thurday, February 15, 2024. This event was held for students entering the Department of Statistics in 2024 to help their school life. It was organized by student council of Department of Statistics working in collaboration with the administrative office of College of Economics. Seogyoon Yoon, a student president, hosted the event and Jaejik Kim, Chair of Department of Statistics, also attended to add an occasion. The event began with a welcome speech from the Chair of Department of Statistics. Since then, various information for school life has been shared, including introduction of departments and curriculum guidance, scholarship system and how to design career, introduction of academic activities, and giving a welcome kits. After that, students had recreation and talent show to promote friendship.

[OB alumni] Yibyung Seol(matriculated in 1951), 1st President of College of Economics Alumni Association Jaehong Choi(matriculated in 1978), former President of College of Economics Alumni Association Byungsun Min(matriculated in 1983), President of College of Economics Alumni Association Jongwon Choi(matriculated in 1979), President of Department of Statistics Alumni Association Jinkyu Kim(matriculated in 1982), General Secretary of Department of Statistics Alumni Association Heebum Park(matriculated in 1981), President of Department of Agricultural Economics Alumni Association Hwang Lee(matriculated in 1983), next term President of Department of Agricultural Economics Alumni Association Youngbong Yoon(matriculated in 1987/CPA), Auditor of College of Economics Alumni Association [YB alumni] Yong-gi Jung(matriculated in 2007/Lawyer), Auditor of College of Economics Alumni Association Yoonbin Kim(matriculated in 2017/CPA) Jongho Kim(matriculated in 2017/Shinhan Securities) Wontae Lee(matriculated in 2017/Samsung Asset Management) Dongwook Cha(matriculated in 1981), Vice president of SKKU Alumni Association, and Sunghyun Kim, Dean of College of Economics, offered congratulatory remarks for the event. There was also the induction ceremony for OB Mentors Ikwook Lee(matriculated in 1967), Hongil Shin(matriculated in 1969), and Sungha Ji(matriculated in 1972). They were inducted into the College of Economics’ Mentor Hall of Fame. After the ceremony, alumni had time to suggest ideas for the development of their alma mater and alumni association. With the various help of alumni, the event ended in a good atmosphere.

- [General] Academic Conference with Vietnam National University(VNU) at Hanoi
- On January 5, 2024, Department of Global Economics at SKKU and Vietnam National University(VNU) participated in an academic conference held in Hanoi, Vietnam. This academic conference, hosted at the Vietnam National University, was held to strengthen the international exchange network between students majoring in economics in both Korea and Vietnam and to share research results on global economic issues. 12 students(11 undergraduate students, 1 master student), and 2 professors of SKKU, and about 20 students and 11 professors of VNU participated in the final presentation of the conference. Professor Nguyen An Thinh of VNU shared his research with a special lecture on "The Power of Innovation: How Vietnam Became an Emerging Economy," and Professor Yeonha Jung gave a special lecture on "Agrarian Origins of Indigenousism and Collectivism.“ Through participation in these academic conferences, it is expected that students will gain undergraduate research experience and continue to expand their international exchange networks. A student who participated in the conference said, “I could learn economic and statistical knowledge while solving difficult problems with my team members.” Professor Jaesung Choi, the Chair of Department of Global Economics, said “We have not been able to hold overseas academic events due to external factors. But from now on, we will continue to hold various events and seminars to increase students’ global competence.”

- [Research] Won the First Prize in FIS field at 2024 Winter Conference Hosted by Korean Insurance Academic Society
- SKKU students research team(Adviser: Jinhyung Lee), consisting of Seungju Bae, Minju Lee, and Byoungwoon Youn, won the First Prize under the guidance of Professor Jinhyung Lee in FIS category of the 2024 Winter Conference held by the Korean Insurance Academic Society. The research team conducted a study under the topic “The impact of the case payment system on legal copayment and new private insurance subscriptions: focusing on Cataract Surgery.” The meaning of this study is to analyze the relationship between the Korea's public system and private insurance in a new perspective and present the role of private insurance in Korea in the future. Seungju Bae, the Research team leader, said “It was a big challenge to research and present at the conference as an undergraduate student. But thanks to the guidance Professor Lee and other team members, I was able to learn many things and even received the first prize.”

- 2024 Economics Freshman Orientation Held
- The Department of Economics held the "2024 Economics Major Freshman Orientation" at the Songchu Crown Haitai Training Center in Yangju, Gyeonggi-do, from February 15th to 16th. This event was held for students entering the Department of Economics in 2024 to help school life. It was organized by student council of Department of Economics working in collaboration with the administrative office of College of Economics. In particular, unlike previous years' events, it was held in the form of a 1 night 2 days workshop for the first time since 1948. Junghwa Park ,a temporary student president, hosted the event and 5 faculty members, including Hyunchul Kim, Chair of Department of Economics, also attended to add an occasion. The event began with a welcome speech from the Chair of Department of Economics. Since then, various information for school life has been shared, including introduction of departments and curriculum guidance, scholarship system and how to design career, introduction of academic activities, and giving a welcome kits. After that, students had recreation and talent show to promote friendship.

- 2024 College of Economics Winter Commencement Ceremony Held
- 2024 College of Economics Winter Commencement Ceremony was held on February 19 (Mon) in Jo Byungdu Hall on the 5th floor of the 600th Anniversary Hall. With the school flag at the head, Sunghyun Kim (Dean of College of Economics), Byungsun Min (President of College of Economics Alumni Association), Kiyeon Kim(Secretary General of College of Economics Alumni Association) Jaesung Choi (Chair, Department of Global Economics), Jaejik Kim (Chair, Department of Statistics), Hyunchul Kim (Chair, Department of Economics), Professor Ho-yeon Kim, Professor Junsang Lee, Professor Dukgyoo Kim, Professor Keunbaik Lee, Professor Keeyoung Rhee, and Professor Yeonha Jung attended the event. In particular, all graduates who attended the commencement ceremony had time to receive their degree certificates directly from the dean of College of Economics. A total of 248 students were awarded degrees at the ceremony, with 199 bachelors, 45 masters, and 4 doctors. Sunghyun Kim, Dean of College of Economics, said, “Graduation is not an end but a new beginning. The seniors who graduated earlier will lead you, and the professors will show support for your success. And once again, congratulate to all students who graduated safely at a difficult time.” In addition, the valedictorians, Jeongseok Bang (Master in Economics) and Song Kim (Bachelor in Economics), expressed their will “Let's move forward confidently to the future.” Many parents and acquaintances, and faculty attended the ceremony and the event ended successfully as graduates thanked their parents and professors and threw their caps in the sky.

- Special lecture given by Prof. Myron Scholes, Nobel Laureate in Economics World Enlightening Sungdae Myeongnyun Special Lecture - Invitation of overseas scholars such as Nobel laureate scholars and diagnosis of Korean economy and society - Leading a future education model by combining contents with renowned professors from foreign universities The Office of Academic Affairs, BK21 Education Research Center of College of Economics, and SKKU Nobel Prize Candidate Sponsorship Committee is holding a special lecture given by Professor Myron Scholes (Stanford University), Nobel Prize Laureate in Economics, on September 7 (Wed) at 10 a.m. in the first conference room of the 600th Anniversary Hall. The purpose of Sungdae Myeongnyun lecture is to spread the school philosophy of 인의예지 (Benevolence, Righteousness, Propriety, Wisdom) and to produce premium lecture that cultivates the personality of students and leads the education of community spirit by inviting local and international scholars and opening it up to the public. Scholes is the originator of the Black-Scholes-Merton model and Nobel laureate in Economic Sciences for proposing an innovative model that changed the paradigm of the pricing theory of derivatives. The topic of this special lecture is "The Future of Finance," which begins with a congratulatory speech by Chairman Kim Junyoung. Shortly after the lecture, economists from SKKU including Sunghyun Kim (Dean of College of Economics), Prof. Younghan Kim (College of Economics), and the senior researchers at SKKU’s Economics Research institute, Prof. Robert Webb (University of Virginia), and Prof. Jonathan Batten (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology/Editor-in-chief, Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money, SSCI) will join the Q&A session. Additionally, undergraduates attending the lecture are also given a chance to ask questions. Any member of our university (students, professors, employees, alumni) can attend the special lecture given by the Nobel Laureate online through Zoom. Professor Dujin Ryu of the economics department, who organized the event, said, "Robert Merton, the Nobel Prize winner in Economic Sciences, visited Sungkyunkwan University in 2019 to discuss lectures and international cooperation, and the Nobel Laureates’ special lecture, which got canceled due to COVID-19, has restarted now. Our university has invited both Nobel laureates who invented the Black-Scholes-Merton model, the most famous theory in finance and finance (except for late Professor Fisher Black, due to the statutes of the Nobel Committee on posthumous awards).
