- Prof. Hee Joon KANG awared as Excellent Lecturer of 2016
- On June 16th, Prof. Hee Joon KANG was awarded as one of the '2016 Excellent Lecturer' by SKKU. Pr. KANG has given lectures on Microeconomics to Global Economics students for years. He showed great course evaluation scores during 2 semesters of 2016 again, and finally named as one of the excellent lecturer of 2016. Dean of the college of Economics(Prof. Min Seong KIM/Left) and President of Global Economics(Prof. Sung Hyun KIM/Right) are awarding prof. KANG(Center of Picture) at dean's Office, on June 19th.

- SKKU Enters Top 100 in THE World Reputation Rankings for First Time
- SKKU has placed within top 100 in World Reputation Rankings by Times Higher Education (THE) for the first time. On July 15th, THE announced the World Reputation Rankings 2017. In the evaluation, three universities in Korea were listed in Top 100: Seoul National University (45th), KAIST (81~90th), and SKKU (90~100th). Meanwhile, Harvard University ranked No. 1 for the seventh year in a row while MIT and Stanford University placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively. - SKKU Int’l Students Experience Seoul and Korean Culture
- The Office of International Student Services (OISS) held the “SKKU International Student Culture Experience and Exchange Program of the Humanities Social Sciences Campus (HSSC) and Natural Sciences Campus (NSC) - 2017 Sungkyunwan Tour and Seoul Castle Road Walk” as a student activity on the 13th (SAT) of May. More than 50 international students participated in this event. Especially, 30 students from the NSC enjoyed the Seoul castle walk and HSS Campus tour as it was their first visit to the HSSC. After the walking tour, all of the participants enjoyed Korean traditional food (bibimbab, seafood & potato pancake) for lunch. The OISS plans to provide various events for international students at both the Humanities and Social Sciences and Natural Sciences Campus to experience Korea’s unique culture. This event was the start of cultural programs for 2017 and a tour of the NSC and Suwon Hwasung Fortress will be held next time.

- LEE Won Gil Scholarship Conferment Ceremony
- The College of Economics (Dean: Min Seong KIM) held the ‘LEE Won Gil Scholarship’ conferment ceremony of 2017, on April 3rd (Mon). The ‘LEE Won Gil Scholarship’ was founded by CEO of the Seowon Corporation Won Gil LEE (Dept. of Economics, ’61) in order to support students who study hard in difficult environments. Prof. Joon Seo LEE (Dept. of Design) attended the ceremony on behalf of Mr. LEE delivered the scholarship certificates to Prof. KIM, the Dean of the College of Economics, who then presented them to 5 students.

- SKKU has proved to be a ‘Global Top University’
- Beyond one of the renowned universities in Korea, SKKU has proved to be a ‘Global Top University’ by placing high in evaluation rankings. Recently, SKKU placed 13th in the ‘Asia University Rankings 2017’ by Times Higher Education, while ranking 1st among Korean comprehensive private universities. The Times stated that “from continuous development, SKKU is leading changes among Korean higher education institutions.” SKKU declared a ‘New Challenge Project’ last year in order to step forward and become a globally renowned university. This project includes action plans to be placed in the Asia top 10 and World top 50 from competitions with international universities. SKKU is strengthening its networks with research-oriented universities of the world, such as expanding joint forums with top engineering schools in the US. This year, SKKU plans to hold a join forum with the University of Minnesota in the field of Nano and Physics and SKKU-PKU forum with Peking University, China. The President of SKKU, Kyu Sang CHUNG said “I am very happy to see these results which represent SKKU’s hard work over the past years. Through the ‘New Challenge Project’, SKKU will focus on developing its core strategy and becoming a world renowned university.” Since Samsung Foundation joined SKKU management in 1996, the university has shown rapid development. Nowadays, SKKU is working on education innovation with Samsung to cultivate the most talented engineers. Also, many convergence programs and systems are in the process of development according to the needs of the 4th industrial revolution era.

- College of Economics Graduate School Fair held
- 17-Spring's SKKU Graduate School Fair was held on 4th April (Tue) at ChoByungDoo Hall, 600th Anniversary Building for undergraduate students and graduates who are interested in entering a graduate school. College of Economics also took part in the fair. Department of Economics, Statistics, International Trade and Actuarial Science took boothes and provided information such as curriculums, career advice, scholarships and personal consulting to more than 35 students. During the fair, Dean Minsung KIM also awarded undergraduate students who got excellent results from the 2016-2nd semester, by bestowing Dean's Lists on them.

- SKKU is Named No.1 Korea Comprehensive Private University by THE Asia University Rankings 2017
- SKKU has placed 13th in Asia University Rankings 2017 by Times Higher Education, while ranking 1st among Korean comprehensive private universities. SKKU received a total of 60.2 points with the composition of points as; Learning Environment: 56.0, Research: 55.5, Citations: 66.5, International Outlook: 39.6, Industry Income: 88.9. Meanwhile, Seoul National University received 66.1 points, while Korea University and Yonsei University got 52.8 points and 48.8 points respectively. In particular, SKKU received great recognition among universities in Korea in the area of Citations (Research Influence) by having 66.5 points, followed by Ulsan University (60.8), Seoul National University (58.8), Korea University (49.2) and Kyunghee University (48.5). One thing to note from this evaluation is that many Chinese universities received improved results. The editor of THE stated that “as a result of concentrated investment over the past 10 years, many Chinese universities including Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University have become distinguished. If Chinese universities can secure more outstanding faculties, their research performances, as well as internalization activities, will become more developed.”

- Prof. Joon Mo CHO (Dept. of Economics) has been chosen for SKKU Fellowship Awardee
- Prof. Joon Mo CHO has been chosen for SKKU Fellowship Awardee by publishing 42 research articles in the field of labor economics at SSCI Journal, and receiving recognition for his outstanding performance. There are several researches representing his work over the past 4 years and are introduced as follows: (1) Jobs in the Bureaucratic Afterlife: A Corruption-Facilitating Mechanism Associated with Law Enforcement (with Iljoong Kim), Southern Economic Journal, vol. 68, 2001 This article starts with an observation that the employment of former regulatory officers by a regulated firm might be an integral part of the corruption-facilitating mechanism (CFM). The article hypothesizes that such employment constitutes the deferred payment for the corruption previously supplied. Although anecdotal evidence of this kind of corruption abounds, it has proven difficult to substantiate. The article provides an explanation for why this deferred payment arrangement might be attractive to both demanders and suppliers of corruption. It also offers tentative empirical support for the hypothesis that it plays a role as CFM in Korea, with the implication that this CFM hypothesis can be generalized to a host of regulatory countries. (2) “Why do good performing students highly rate their instructors?”, Economics of Education Review, vol. 49, 2015 This article analyzes the behavior of students in a college classroom with regard to their evaluation of teacher performance. As some students are randomly able to see their grades prior to the evaluation, the “natural” experiment provides a unique opportunity for testing the hypothesis as to whether there exists a possibility of a hedonic (implicit) exchange between the students’ grades and teaching evaluations. Students with good grades tend to highly rate the teaching quality of their instructors, in comparison with those who receive relatively poor grades. This study finds that students with better grades than their predicted grades provide a psychological “gift” to their teachers by giving a higher teacher evaluation; whereas the opposite occurs with those students receiving lower grades than their predictions. These empirical results demonstrate that a previous interpretation on the effect of student grades in an incumbent course with regard to the teaching quality may have to be somewhat discounted. (3) “The impact of epidemics on labor market: Identifying victims of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in the Korean labor market”, International Journal for Equity in Health, vol. 15, 2016 The vulnerability approach suggests that disasters such as epidemics have different effects according not only to physical vulnerability, but also to economic class (status). This paper examines the effect of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome epidemic on the labor market, to investigate whether vulnerable groups become more vulnerable due to an interaction between the socio-economic structure and physical risk. This paper examines the effect of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome epidemic on the labor market by considering unemployment status, job status, working hours, reasons for unemployment and underemployment status. In particular, the study investigates whether the U-shaped curve becomes a J-shaped curve due to the interaction between medical vulnerability and labor market vulnerability after an outbreak, assuming that the relative vulnerability in the labor market by age shows a U curve with peaks for the young group and middle aged and old aged groups using the Economically Active Population Survey. We use the difference in difference approach and also conduct a falsification check and robustness check. The results suggest that older workers faced a higher possibility of unemployment after the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome outbreak. In particular, they experienced higher involuntary unemployment and underemployment status as well as decreased working hours. It was confirmed that the relative vulnerability of the labor market for older workers was higher than for the other age groups after the epidemic outbreak due to the double whammy of vulnerability in the medical and labor market. The vulnerability in the young group partially increased compared to the 30s and 40s age groups due to their relative vulnerability in the labor market despite being healthy. We find that assuming the relative vulnerability in the existing labor market shows a U shape with age increase, the U-shaped curve became J-shaped after the outbreak. Disasters like epidemics can occur unexpectedly and affect certain groups more than other. Therefore, medical protection should be enhanced for groups vulnerable to disease, and economic measures are also required for the protection of their livelihoods in the labor market to prevent unemployment stemming from inequality.

- 2017 Matriculation Ceremony: SKKU has been Waiting for Your Entrance for 619 Years
- SKKU held the 2017 Matriculation Ceremony on Feb 27th (Monday) at Suseong Hall, Natural Sciences Campus. About 4,000 freshmen were welcomed at the ceremony. The faculties of the academic board including President Kyu Sang CHUNG, visited ‘Sungkyun Dae Sung Jun’ before the matriculation ceremony, in order to practice ‘Go You Rye’ which is the unique ceremony of SKKU informing the beginning of the big event (matriculation, graduation, building new construction, etc) at Confucius shrine. Many alumni and students who play active parts in various fields attended and celebrated the entrance of the new students. Corresponding with SKKU’ vision ‘Truly, Global Leading University’, a student Gasimoba LEILA from Russia read the freshman oath as a representative of all freshmen.

- 2017 College of Economics Winter Graduation Ceremonies held
- Department of Economics/Global Economics, Statistics and Actuarial Science held their 2017 Winter Graduation Ceremony on Feb 20th and Feb 24th. Department of Economics and Global Economics held joint Ceremony for the graduation on Feb 20th(Mon) at the 600th Anniversary Hall. A total of 190 students (Economics undergraduate: 141, graduate: 7, Ph.D: 3 / Global Economics undergraduate: 39) received their degrees. On Feb 24th(Fri), Department of Statistics held their Graduation ceremony at Toegye Hall of Humanites, while Department of Actuarial Science held it’s own at Business School Building. 68 students from Statistics (58 undergraduates and 10 graduates) and 11 graduate students from Actuarial Science received their degrees. KIM, the Dean of the college participated all of the ceremonies and delivered speeches to celebrate the students. Families, friends of the students and many honored alumni of each departments also joined and made the day more meaningful.
