- Professor Kim Ki-hyun's research team was selected as the OCF's cover paper.
- New PKS-NRPS Hybrid Substance Found from Mold Cladosporium sphaerospermum Originating from Hydractinia echinata in Marine Animals - COVER decorations in the Organic Chemistry Frontier, a world-renowned chemical journal - Professor Kim Ki-hyun’s research team (1st author: Lee Seung-rak in Ph.D. program) published excellent research results in the April issue of Organic Chemistry Frontiers (IF 5.455, JCR Ranking 8.8 percent), a world-renowned journal in chemistry, and achieved a success in decorating the cover. Professor Kim Ki-hyun's research team successfully separated and identified structure of the new polyketide synthase - non-ribosomal peptide synthetase PKS-NRPS hybrid substance (cladosporicin A, cladosporiumins I, J) - from the fungus Cladosporium sphaerospermum from the marine animal Hydractinia echinata. The results provided an opportunity to expand natural materials focused on plants to symbiotic microbes originating from the oceans, and suggest new techniques to efficiently separate and refine new natural materials while applying LC/MS analysis and a library based on the unique ultraviolet rays of compounds in the traditional process of separating natural substances. In addition, the gene-based biosynthetic pathways for newly identified compounds were successfully identified through various approaches, such as metabolic analysis.

- Professor Kim Ki-hyun's research team published a paper on Nature Microbiology
- Professor Kim Ki-hyun's research team confirmed that intestinal microorganisms that produce GABA exist in the human intestine by identifying certain microorganisms that grow dependent on the neurotransmitter GABA from the human intestinal microorganism group, and succeeded in proving that they are actually linked to the onset of depression. Professor Kim Ki-hyun emphasized the findings as "the first case in which the interaction of intestinal microorganisms is made by certain low-molecular materials and applied by the fusion of microbial culture technology and natural chemical fields to understand them," and "This study shows that certain intestinal microorganisms actually affect the development of depression and this can suggest the possibility of developing new antidepressants and preventative measures by using new intestinal microorganisms." The study was conducted in a joint study with the Northern University and Harvard Medical School and published in March 2019 in Nature Microbiology (Impact Factor 14.174), a world-class journal of microbiology. Nature Microbiology, 4, 396-403 (2019). * Paper: GABA-modulating bacteria of the human cut microbiota * 1st Co-author: Kim Ki-hyun

- Selection of follow-up tasks for BRL (Basic Research Laboratory)
- A research team led by Professor Kim In-soo/Kim Hyung-sik of our university has been selected for a follow-up project of the National Research Foundation of Korea's Basic Research Laboratory (BRL) for 2019. The BRL is supported for strengthening the national basic research capabilities, including forming new theories in the field of basic research and solving scientific challenges by forming a small research group centering on specific research topics. Professor Kim In-soo's research team (Pharmacy: Kim In-soo, Kim Hyung-sik, Medicine: Uhm Sung-hee, and Kwon Il-min) has focused on the Late Stage Drug Optimization study, which has been carried out for the past three years (2016-2018) and has been selected as a follow-up study. The study is the design and derivation of effective anti-cancer and anti-diabetic substances, and the study of molecular pre-diagnosis of related diseases. Subsequent tasks for BRL will be carried out with a total funding of 1.5 billion won over the next 3 years. Congratulations on selecting a follow-up project for the BRL project by Professor Kim In-soo's research team.
