New Lignan Substances to Suppress Breast Cancer and Hyperglycemia in Rice Roots
Professor Kim Ki-hyun's research team (1st author: Master's Program of Lee Tae-kyung) has found a new lignan substance in rice roots that inhibits breast cancer cell growth and regulates hyperglycemia. Rice roots (Oryzae radix) are medicinal herbs known to help digestion, remove heat and stop sweating.
In February, the research team discovered oryzativol A and oryzativol B, in rice roots, and announced that they will help suppress fat cell differentiation and promote osteogenesis. In a subsequent study, the team discovered a new oryzativol C in rice roots, and found that the substance inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) and promotes insulin secretion by glucose stimulation in INS-1 cells.
The research team expected the substance to help suppress breast cancer and control hyperglycemia based on the activity shown.
The findings were selected in the November cover of the renowned overseas journal Chemistry & Biodiversity.
