Professor Kim Ki-hyun's research team (the first author: Dr. Lee Seung-rak's Ph.D. program) published in January in the Journal of Natural Products (IF 3.885, JCR Banking 9.2%). Professor Kim Ki-hyun's research team succeeded in separating the new toxic substances from the Podostroma cornu-damae, known as the deadly poison mushrooms.
In this study, small amounts of the collected Podostroma cornu-damae were successfully found to be cultured in a laboratory environment, and new Macrocyclic trichothecene was separated and their compounds were successfully saved by actively utilizing the LC/MS and the structure-specific UV-spectrum library to find toxic substances. When it comes to chemical structural determination, organic reactions and chemical polarities were calculated in the computer environment and absolute three-dimensional structural arrangement was successfully discovered.
In this study, the toxic substances identified by their structure were tested for cancer activity in breast cancer cells and were found to have strong anti-cancer effects in nanomolecular (nM) concentrations. And by segregating a number of toxic substances with various chemical and structural functional instruments and assessing their anti-cancer activity, they were able to identify the functional organs essential to anti-cancer activity, and they identified the potential for the development of natural anti-cancer drugs by using the toxic ingredients of poison mushrooms.
