Professor Kim In-soo’s research team (1st author: Lee Seok-hoon in Ph.D program) made an effort to decorate the cover of the Journal of Organic Chemistry published in 2019 February.
Professor Kim In-soo's research team's findings are a synthetic method that uses a direct conversion reaction of carbon-hydrogen bonds using ruthenium catalyst to introduce hydroxymethylene groups into the indol-series compounds (indole, indoline and azaindole), an important unit structure of medicine.
In particular, this synthesis method is evaluated as a way to transform the structure of physiologically active compounds innovatively by using only a small amount of ruthenium catalysts to selectively introduce the paraformaldehyde to the intended location.
Hydroxymethylene functional groups can control the way they combine with pharmacists through changes in physical characteristics, such as interaction by hydrogen bonds and improvements in solubility.
This is a very important synthetic method from a medicinal and chemical standpoint, especially since it is a technology that can radically control the activity of drugs.
