- Kim Hye-joo (Global Business Administartion 18), University of Reading Exchange Student Story
- 1. Hello, please introduce yourself first. Hello, I'm Hye-joo Kim, a freshman in Global Business Administration who went to University of Reading in the first semester of 2021. I always wanted to go as an exchange student, but I postponed it once due to COVID-19 and finally got to go! 2. Despite the difficult situation, I heard that you have successfully completed your University of Reading exchange in England.^^ In fact, I thought a lot about it before leaving the country due to the COVID-19. In January, when I left the country, the number of confirmed cases in the UK was well over 60,000, and vaccines were not supplied as active as they are now. In fact, most of the students who applied for exchange students canceled or postponed it. I hesitated a lot at first, but I thought I should do things that I think I will regret for the rest of my life if I don't do it now. In the end, not hundreds of reasons why I shouldn't go, such as "Will COVID-19 be caught?" and "Will racism be worse against Asians?", but one reason why I should go made me go. And I think that was the best choice I made during my college life. In my case, I went alone without other students, but it felt like I was adventuring alone and the experience of doing it alone without leaning on anyone became a great asset to me. Due to the COVID-19, I paid a lot of attention to hygiene such as distancing, mask, disinfection, etc. during my daily life or traveling, and I think I came back safely because I was ready to move like this. 3. How is the University of Reading like? How did you lived in there? University of Reading is located on UK Reading, this is the first time that our school sent exchange students. Perhaps they started student exchanging with most Korean universities in recent years. And It was very hard time to me because even one essay do not exist. University of Reading is quiet and a thinly populated town. In particular, campus of University of Reading is very large, population density is much lower than downtown. So, I felt rather not dangerous, when I go to there at the peak of pandemic. The campus is well-matched with nature and has many green grasslands, and you can often see blue squirrels and cats as you walk by. I liked this quiet University of Reading because I usually go to crowded tourist attractions anyway. Another advantage of Univ. of Reading is that it is close to London. In particular, it's a half-hour drive from Paddington Station in London, a stopover to downtown London, and you can go to downtown in about an hour, so you can take a one-day trip without any difficulty. So I often traveled by train. Due to COVID-19, every class in the University of Reading goes on online. The teaching method is not much different from SKKU, but there is a tutorial/session that is conducted by video every week. During this time, case analysis and discussions are usually held, and it was refreshing to be able to share opinions directly with local students in the UK. Friendship usually consisted of flatmates who lived on the same flat, and I remember receiving a lot of comfort by leaving a note in front of the door when it was hard to adapt to the new situation. After that, we cooked and shared food together. We were really comfortable. Also, unlike other British universities, Reading offers its own meal services, and it seems that it was used very often because of the opportunity to eat various local foods. 4. What did you prepare for the selection of exchange students? If there are any good tips for business school students, please share them. In fact, many people think it will be difficult to be selected as exchange students, but it's not like that at all. The two criteria for selecting exchange students are English grades and credits. The English grade required for exchange students (mainly TOEFL, IELTS) is not that high, and if anyone studies a little bit (especially if you're a vocal cords student!) I think it's not that difficult to prepare for English grades in English. In particular, schools with low competition rates, or schools that do not meet the English grades required by the schools, can be considered to be accepted if they apply. Some schools don't even require English grades at all, so I don't think it's necessary to give up from the beginning even if you can't speak English. If you apply to a school with a high competitive rate, grades are the most important. Even if there is an interview, it is not that difficult, and other applicants are similar in their skills, so I felt that they are not that distinguishable, and in the end, they are determined by their grades. So if you have a low grade, it is important to explore enough schools on the list to find places with low or under-competition rates and take a strategic approach. If you consider your conditions and practicality and come up with the best scenario to pass, you can expect good enough results. 5. Was there any difference from what you actually experienced from the exchange student activities you thought? It wasn't just the joy that I had when I went as an exchange student. Many people have fantasies about foreign countries, and I also left with such excitement, but in fact, those fantasies disappear quickly after a month or two. In particular, the first month was very difficult because I had to take responsibility for everything by myself while working in a safe zone surrounded by family and friends. Also, it was hard to accept that the system and benefits that were familiar as locals in Korea are not natural here. In addition, there were many times when communication was difficult because I wore a mask with a British accent that was hard to understand. But despite all this, meeting new people, new lifestyles and new places is attractive enough to offset all this. Staying in a safe zone is comfortable and secure, but at the same time boring and refusing to change is the same as not being able to grow any more. While I was an exchange student, I felt left out that I did not belong here as a stranger, but at the same time I felt freedom and freedom. Just as everything has pros and cons, it seems that the experience of exchange students can become richer and grow through these two-family feelings. Also, what I realized while living abroad is that there is a big difference between traveling and living. I thought this is the reason why I need to experience as an exchange student. It's because it's obvious that an exchange student will be a very good "vaccination" for students who are thinking about whether to go abroad and build their careers in the future. 6. What is your plan for the future? I think the future plan is a very difficult question. In particular, older friends who are about to graduate are also worried about their careers. In fact, I don't really like the motif of what to do at this age. Of course, you need to think about what you're going to do, but I don't think there's anything more tragic than vaguely being a guide to define your path and fit it in. So I still want to stay at the stage of thinking about what I really want, and I'm trying to be an empiricist who leaves many possibilities open rather than a perfectionist. The immediate plan is to gain more experience including internship activities. If you focus on the present, won't you get the answer at some point? Finally, it was nice to have the opportunity to look back on myself after going to exchange students. I think it's the best experience I've ever had in college. If I had had anxiety about an opaque future before I left, I think I've come to believe in my possibilities even more now. Again, we can go anywhere and do anything. If you have a classmate who is wondering whether to go or not even after reading, please close your eyes and shout.

- Kim Yong-Joon, a professor of SKKU Business School, appeared in JTBC “차이나는 클라스” and lectured on the Chinese companies leading The Fourth Industrial Revolution. On July 15 (Thursday), Professor Kim stepped up as the first lecturer in the four-part "War of Money." He and other casts shared questions and answers under the theme of "Unveiling Chinese Top Companies" and had time to analyze Chinese companies such as Alibaba, Huawei, and Xiaomi from a new perspective. In particular, he said, "I am an expert who has been studying Chinese companies for more than 20 years, but I did not actually study in China," raising questions and revealed how he formed ties with China through the show. In the following class, top Chinese companies, including Alibaba founder Ma Yun, were dealt. The casts were greatly surprised by the unique corporate culture and hidden stories of world-renowned Chinese companies. With the growth of global companies, China is now one of the leading countries in the world of the fourth industry. Professor Kim emphasized, "We should have a perspective on properly analyzing Chinese companies." He added, "If you look at Chinese companies from the wrong perspective, Korean companies' external positions will become narrower, and Korea's fourth industry will not be able to take the right direction."

- [Student Success Story] Kim Eo-Jin won the top prize at the Suwon Sustainable Living Lab Idea Contest
-
There was a 16th special lecture of Student Success Story on June 10th. Kim Eo-Jin presented her story named “Challenge the contest and worthful prize: The success story of team project.” She shared her experience when she won the first prize at the Suwon Sustainable Living Lab Idea Contest, and other various activities like Daum Poem Festival, Urban Restoration Plato Start-Up School and the convergence education for humanities. We interviewed her trying to live worthful and joyful like from learning and growth. 1. Hello, nice to meet you. Please introduce yourself. Hello! I’m Kim Eo-Jin, a second grader of Business administration. I won the first prize at at the Suwon Sustainable Living Lab Idea Contest, so I lectured as a Student Success Story speaker. It’s an honor to have an interview. 2. You have a lot of activities. Can you talk about them? When I have a first summer vacation, I participated in Daum Poem Festival as an activist. There were events like exhibition of poetry and performances, I, as an activist, designed the festival and promoted them. And at the contest I said before, I found some parts to complement, and designed immediate childcare service and exchange work service which could create childcare community composed of parents. Based on this idea, I made an emergency childcare service with UI and I won the first prize.
In the winter vacation, I joined the Urban Restoration Plato Start-Up School and the convergence education for Humanities. In the Start-Up School, I took a start-up class and designed simple business. And in the convergence education, I learned AI and Big-Data and their examples in social science studies. I’m a member of mentoring program and promotion marketing team of Korea Student Aid Foundation. 3. Do you have interesting stories preparing contest? Brainstorming, interviewing and feedback. We had brainstorming online by using Beecnavas. It is like a google docs which provides online team project, and it was useful to have various functions. By using it, we had brainstorming about half of an hour. We didn’t need to have a meeting, but just left a message, and it was easy to visualize the ideas of teammates. After then, we went on an interview to Suwon to get some information. We tried a street survey, but it was hard. I felt distrust attention of citizens. Thankfully, teammates tried their best with bright will to communicate with citizens, so we finished the interview successfully. We always approached in sunny faces and present them our student ID, poster of the contest, and our ppt to explain them. And with the feedbacks, we could improve our solution and get the prize. I have an experience to make a speech in Design-thinking education program. All participants did their feedback by 2 post-its per person, one for strong point and weak point for other. It was a lot of help. We got confidence by strong point and got unexpected ideas from the weak point. 4. Did you have some trouble preparing your contest? And how did you overcome it? The most troublesome point was a spatial difference with teammates. I was far away from Seoul because of Covid-19 but other teammates were not, so we had to have meetings online. The online meetings were inefficient and hard to advance. To overcome, we made some rules to turn on the camera and microphone. Then, using the strong point of online, we had average 2 hours of meetings per a day. Also, we did not go into the next parts until we perfectly finish one part. It was hard to decide who does what. When it comes to roll allocation, I think accuracy and fairness are the most important thing to consider. Everyone has exact roll, and the roll would not be too huge for someone. There were rolls like speech and UI-making which should be done in face-to-face contact, I had a problem that it was difficult to participate. Therefore, for fairness, offline activities were conducted by other teammates, and I did a research and arrangement, made ppt, and modified UI. However, I stayed in Seoul for a week and tried my best at the end of the contest submission period. 5. What are your future career paths and goals? I’m interested in marketing and especially sports marketer. Rather than blindly conducting career-related activities, I want to analyze the competence of the marketer and set up a timeline to proceed with the necessary activities step by step. I always try to live a life with learning and development and a life where I can feel a sense of accomplishment and joy from learning. I'm not just experiencing and passing through any activities, but I'm trying to be helpful and changeable. 6. Lastly, please say something to Sungkyunkwan University's business students. I think college life is a continuation of challenges. If you are a freshman and have no experience or have vague fears about the competition, I hope you can participate in the competition at least once. As a freshman who knew nothing, I also had a chance to learn and grow a lot through the competition. And I hope all the business school students, including myself, who are working hard for their dreams, achieve their dreams! -

- Kim Min-ji, Ph.D. student, 2020 Management major, Outstanding Paper Award, Best Paper Award-winning Interview
-
The Management major of the business school (General Graduate School) held the Sungkyunkwan University Management College Management Excellence Paper Award for the first time this year to encourage the research of master's and doctorate students. It is selected from the first and second semesters of the year's graduation papers and academic journal publication papers (including those scheduled to be published), and the journal publication papers are limited to the first author and two co-authors. Kim Min-ji (Best Award), Kim Dae-ho (Best Award) and Choi Soon-joo (Best Award) are three winners. I heard about Kim Min-ji and Won-woo, who won the best prize this year, and their research fields and papers. Kim Min-ji(Professor : Kim Do-hyun)
1. Hello, please give me a brief self-introduction (research, etc.). Hello, I'm Kim Min-ji, a Ph.D. student majoring in organizational theory, majoring in business administration at Sungkyunkwan University. After obtaining a master's degree from Sungkyunkwan University, he is currently being coached by Professor Kim Do-hyun, who is majoring in organizational theory, until his doctorate. My main area of interest is organizational learning theory and I focus on research using performance feedback models in detail. We are currently conducting several other research together with our doctoral dissertation and are interested in research topics and fields that do not deviate much from the dissertation that we received this time. 2. I heard you won the best thesis award this time! Please tell us how you feel. Thank you. First of all, I would like to thank our management professors for creating this opportunity. I think it was more meaningful because it was a thesis award that included the hearts and meanings of professors majoring in management who prepared it to encourage the research of graduate students in our major. I am very happy to receive the meaningful award of the first Sungkyunkwan University Management major, which was held for the first time. I'll take it as a way to repay you with good research. With this opportunity, I will use this opportunity as a driving force to grow one step further, and I will try to become a good researcher so that I don't become anyone to the honor of this award. Once again, I would like to thank all the professors and students who majored in management. 3. You wrote a paper titled . Please explain in detail what it contains. This study explores how CEO ownership and performance feedback mode (PFM) are combined to influence corporate social responsibility activities (CSRs). Because prior studies looking at the relationship between existing CEO equity rates and CSR did not show consistent results, this paper recognizes the need for contextual variables and reveals when and when the CEO's equity rate is less effective in engaging in CSR activities using performance feedback models. In the existing performance feedback model, when performance is lower than the target set by the company, changes occur in the direction of solving the problem, and on the contrary, when performance is higher than the target, changes in the direction of utilizing free capital. Based on these claims, the study found that CEOs with higher equity rates have higher discretion in decision-making than when performance is lower than target, making them more positive about long-term CSR activities as an alternative to problem solving. This study shows that various factors, such as CEO characteristics and performance feedback, interact with each other to influence CSR activities, and include complex interests in the reasons and purposes of corporate CSR activities. In particular, this study shows that CEOs can use CSR activities as a means in that they are influenced by performance and change CSR. 4. Were there any difficulties or difficulties in writing your thesis? Before preparing for this paper, I had a big slump. During my course life, including master's and doctor's, relatively short-term results did not show up compared to my long course life, which led to a slump. However, I think it was an opportunity to overcome my slump rather than the difficulties I had while writing this paper. Of course, I often worked until dawn to find out why the results I expected didn't come out right at once, but in the process, it was a valuable experience to learn a lot with responsibility. Now that I think about it, I really focused on this paper at the time. It remains a really meaningful memory rather than a hard one. 5. Please tell me about your future goals or areas you would like to study. There's a concept that I've been interested in since I was a master's student, having a research meeting with my advisor, and it's a concept of "truth." The goal is to take an interest in the sincere management activities of the company. In the future, I would like to conduct a study that combines organizational theory to see what these companies' sincere management activities are and, consequently, can have positive effects from a long-term perspective. To a large extent, I am mainly interested in the sustainable management activities of the company. Based on ESG, which is an issue these days, we aim to conduct research on how companies should engage in social responsibility activities and research on their good influence in the future. I hope my research will be delivered as a meaningful message to society, and I will continue to try to explore and study phenomena in the future to become such a researcher. -

- [Research Stories] A Study on the Morality Reasoning Process of Progressives and Conservatives: Evidence in Korea
- A Study on the Morality Reasoning Process of Progressives and Conservatives: Evidence in Korea It shows the electrophysiological mechanism of what different moral values Korea's progress and conservatism have in the context of management ethics in the extreme political confrontation in modern society and how to make different decisions in the context of business ethics. [Photo1] Professor Lee Eun-joo(Left), Dr. Yoon Jin-ho(Right) The paper shows the electrophysiological mechanism of how Korea's progress and conservatism have different moral values in extreme political confrontation in modern society and how different decisions are made in the context of management ethics. A research team led by Lee Eun-joo, a marketing professor at the University of Business, listed a study on how Korea's progress and conservatism go through different psychological mechanisms in the context of corporate business ethics in the Journal of Business Ethics (IF=5.453, Financial Times' Top 50 Journal List). The study was conducted by Dr. Yoon Jin-ho as a moderator under the theme of his doctoral thesis. Specifically, to answer the research question, "How are the brain processes of Korean liberals and conservatives different in moral reasoning?" the study explains the differences between the two political orientations. It is a study that explores the effects of moral ideological asymmetry when ethical violations occur in companies, and investigates the moral reasoning process through moral foundations (i.e., fairness and authority). Different moral reasoning processes were implemented in the Korean context. Study 1 explores the different neural mechanisms underlying Korean progress and conservatism using the neuroscientific method, Event-Related Potential (ERP). Progress in the moral reasoning process for corporate business ethics violations expressed early frontal lobe sonar (EFN) signals, which showed intuitive detection of fairness violations (i.e., moral involvement) to expedite negative judgments. On the other hand, we show that the remuneration projects respect for authority with a higher motivation through a measurement temporal positive (TPP) signal that is expressed later. Both ERP configuration signals occur in less than one second, meaning that they represent both decision steps and moral reasoning processes quickly and intuitively. Through behavioral experiments, Study 2 confirmed that Korea's progress shows a moral engagement strategy, but remuneration shows a rationalization strategy through a medium analysis. Specifically, this is explained that progress shows different moral strategies through fairness, one of the moral foundations, while conservatism shows different moral strategies through authority, one of the moral foundations. The study is expected to deepen knowledge of the complexity of morality in corporate management research as an interdisciplinary study. In addition, Dr. Yoon Jin-ho, who is about to graduate from his Ph.D. degree, was offered an assistant professor at Leonardo da Vinci's School of Business (EMLV) in Paris, France, but will join the Wharton Neuroscience Initiative (WiN) Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. As a postdoctoral researcher, he intends to continue to contribute to the fields of neuroeconomics, consumer brain science, and business ethics. - “If you are young and have dream, let’s get started.” – Kim Ui-Gu(Business Administration 13), owner of Dorian Gray
- Dorian Gray, the main character of “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, gets his eternal youth by devoting his soul to the devil. It is of course impossible for anyone to make a contract with the devil or to keep one’s youth. It’s because human beings live their life of finite time. However, with the perpetuity of time they go for it and finally make changes. In this “Individual Focus”, we met Kim Ui-Gu, who is the owner of a cocktail bar named “Dorian Gray” located in Hyehwa-dong. 3 years ago, the 26-year-old student started his business with youth as security. Time passed, he is a owner of well-known bar now. Q. Hello, please introduce yourself. I’m Kim Ui-Gu, the owner of “Dorian Gray” cocktail bar in Hyehwa. I’m majoring in business administration. Nice to meet you. Q. Can you tell me how did you start your business with this type? I didn’t have exact plan for business. I just pursued what I like, and the cocktail bar was a kind of result. When I was 22, I joined a group of a cocktail and took on a president of the group. With my position, I had opportunities to come in contract with owner of bars. As I listen to stories of them, I became inclined to provide my favorite cocktail to someone. With this wish, I made money on a working holiday to Australia after military service. Back to Korea, I prepare for cocktail work like getting a license and attending an academy and started the business. ▲The poster when he lent the party place and of the Department of Fine Arts display Q. Did you have any difficulties by preparing business or get something new? There was a huge gap between reality and ideals. I dreamed of me making a talking with guests and cocktails with cool atmosphere. However, the tip of an iceberg. With sudden accident like leaking water and blackout, and I had to pay attention to many other things like tax and management. I was just a beginner, it was a huge trouble. Fortunately, many neighboring friends helped me to overcome. Q. There might be not only moments when you wanted to give up, but also moments to think “It’s good to start this job.” As a student I did something by myself. I think it’s enough to make me courage and confidence like I can do whatever I want. It’s also good that guests call me owner. (laugh) I have memories of lot of things like party, exhibition of art students. “Dorian Gray’ is the place where I could achieve what I imagined, thankfully. ▲ The interior of the bar “Dorian Gray” Q. What is the competitiveness of “Dorian Gray”? “Dorian Gray” is the only bar with shisha in Hyehwa. The exotic stores are rare itself and there were few shisha bars in Hyehwa but they closed their business. In this state, our bar has rarity to be an attractive place for many. So, I try not to settle for the present, but to change constantly to make a return for visitors. I always try to communicate with them to make progress. By their feedback, I am improving shisha instruments. I think the instruments changed a lot compared to the beginning. Q. I am curious about you as SKKU student. You know I studied hard to go to SKKU? I think that’s why I didn’t want to study. (laugh) Seniors also advised to me like “Enjoying school life is rights only for freshmen.”, “It is worth to get academic probation at least once.”. I have doubt these were meaningful though. So, when I was a freshman, I try to enjoy college like rather than study. I joined some interesting groups like JDA, the dancing group, and groups of cocktails, start-up, cooking. Q. You might have many experiences of activities. As I have time with people of variety fields and activities, I considered what I like and can do best. The Cocktail bar is one of results of consideration. However, I want to tell freshmen or juniors that It’s better to study in advance. You might have doubt of your study, but it would be your help someday. You can enjoy your time, but you don’t need to think “Study? It’s not important” like me. After I started my cocktail bar, the knowledge of business administration, my major, helped me. Since then, I studied more about that. Q. You like challenges. What is your moto? I always keep my introduction of my SNS. It’s “Do what you wanna do”. We are young and it’s time to do whatever we want before we have much burden. You might regret after doing something, but it’s better than regretting after doing nothing. My moto is just going for it, even if it would be regretful afterwards. Q. Please give some advice or good words for the people who dream start-ups. Until last year, I didn’t recommend starting business. I had to manage all about that so, I thought it’s better to live like others. However, I had chance to work at office, after that, the life of my business was better. The eager to work my job as an owner was far different. I want to tell you that you don’t have to do your best to do your job perfectly. My bar was not also perfect from the first time. Upgrade your job and complement the incomplete. It would be hard to perfectly start. Q. Do you have any plans? In the past, I stimulated myself to success. But nowadays, I got to pursue my happiness. Rather than being obsessed to actual outcome, I want to experience more and concentrate on myself, and other friends too. Q. Do you have the thing you want to say lastly? I am a people person. It’s good to visit my bar drinking cocktails and doing shisha but, feel free to come and have talk with me. You can share interesting stories and worries with me. Of course, I can be a friend of you. “Dorian Gray” is always open to you. Source: SKKUZine_SKKUPeople
